i havn't read the book, but i did see the entire 6 part Tv series, and it was VERY good.
I think he struck a perfect balance of being his normal intellectual self while also being very open minded and really giving himself over the experience.
I think he was very fair, and it was really fun to watch.
I am a huge Fry fan and I read this book. The prologue, honestly, was the only piece worth reading; it offered one of the most honest, astute and succent characterizations of the American psyche I have ever read....and from an Englishman, no doubt!. The rest of the book, unfortunately, read like a bad travel book. I hope the TV series is better.
I wonder when/if the DVD will come out for North America. I caught a little of the program when my wife and I visited England in Oct 2008, and I'd really love to see the whole thing.
The thing that boggles my mind most about Stephen Fry is the fact that he's so... current. He's always doing this or that or something else. I don't know, maybe this didn't make sense to anyone.
I think I kind of know what you mean. Some celebrities who are maybe of the same age/demographic and are better known for their other work, tend to focus on things that happened in the past. Like for example someone like Jeremy Clarkson doing all those documentaries about the world wars and old machines. I far prefer Stephen Fry's documentaries because they are relevant to the world we live in today, and look at things that are happening now. But maybe this isn't what you mean...
It's not really, but thank you for the insightful comment. Possibly that's part of it, the fact that he talks about current things as well. Maybe it's because he's seemingly been around forever and he's only 51 compared to the veteran John Cleese at 69, for example.
Maybe he's describing this fabled "middle america" when comparing us to Yorkshiremen... but I honestly think you can't generalize the personalities or types of people in America; it's such a fucking big place. As Stephen said in a podcast while he was filming the america-thing, the fifty states are all so different they're nearly as culturally independent as different countires in Europe. (okay, they don't have the history obviously, but the lifestyle and common beliefs vary about as much).
I'm from New Zealand, and I like maintaining a mindset that believes in every country I'll get along with some others I won't. Some will think one way others will think another
So why write them all off as one? I'm so sick of people who do that, sadly peple do it to people in their own countries. And since I like so many things from America I can get sad when Americans write themselves off
@Weirfan69 It's a gross exaggeration to say US states are as culturally independent as European countries! While there are regional differences Americans share a base of unique characteristics, e.g. a social-economic stratification & barriers to mobility with the resulting social problems of drugs, crime & hopelessness, systemic racial & ethnic prejudice, religiosity & the intermix of religion & governance, political & militaristic outlooks, attitudes toward violence & social conservativism.
@ontcan1 Spoken like a true idiot. Is that why people choose to move here from other countries and stay? The truth is you dont know us and you never will. All your able to do is hurl insults from afar. If we are as horrible as you say, why dont you join together and invade. We arnt gonna change anything because europe says so. You know we would kick your ass up between your shoulder blades. So stop boring us. Go deal with your muslim and EU problems.
@Weirfan69 As for Stephen Fry, I find him uniquely entertaining, a thoroughly charming man! But you make a good point: as a Canadian on the border, you can't generalize about Americans any more than you can easily understand America. It's too complex, contradictory & confusing for a meaningful evaluation based on a roving drive & visits with a handful of it's citizens. What's entertaining is Fry's commentary, his reactions to what he encounters & the truths he uncovers. But much is missed!
The diversity of each of the states is a given but I wouldn't encourage the comparison between that and European countries just as lots of little provinces - otherwise the EU will make it a reality. I much prefer the simpler comparison between the states with their own laws struggling to co-exist with federal law, and the reality of the union which is several little former countries with their own heritage and smaller parliaments.
Seeing all those 'snapshots' of Stephen Fry at American landmarks and locations reminded me of a photo of my sister, my grandfather and me at Mt. Rushmore. I'm going to pester my mother for a copy and put it in my office. Thank you so much for posting this interview. I'm really hoping that someone will post the series, as well. I'd love to see Stephen Fry touring my country. He's so lovely and I want to know what he thinks of my home.
Just in case you hadn't found any, several people have begun to post the series. One of whom is Iersje, who seems to have their act very much together and has made a playlist of it. Hope that was some help. Enjoy!
As much as I want the Stephen Fry alarm clock, I think it'd be weird for Stephen to know that so many people wake up to him in the morning. That his voice is the first voice people hear when they're just coming out of one of the most intimate states of man: Dreamland
why isnt this man a sir?!

It is utterly hilarious to hear him describe Americans as "Yorkshiremen." Well, and perhaps a little embarrassing as well.

I`m not a listener of the Steve Wright show so could some one explain why it sounds like Mark Radcliffe
wire5858 3 years ago
Simple answer really, Steve Wright was on holiday and Mark Radcliffe was standing-in for him on his afternoon Radio 2 show....
