"Big collection of crappy pipes" - wish I would have seen this series a few years ago. Glad to see it now. Great info presented in an intelligent way. Thanks!
Hey eric, I just started the pipe smoking hobby. I found a couple of Dr. Grabow. It seems that they are brand new, but have been factory broken-in, because there seems to be a thin layer of graphite in the bowl. I was just wondering how you feel about these pipes as a beginer pipe.
hey eric I've got a 1967 peterson harp pipe and I bought i brand new this year for $200 and it's awesome I know that's irrelevant but I just think it's awesome haha
Like anything else, what's "bad" about tobacco is it's abused. Smoking 20 cigs a day (one pack) is a lot. Eating 20 cheeseburgers a day for 30 yrs is also stupid. You got problem now? No Duh! Doesn't mean cheeseburgers are bad.
I think of a bowl as equal to a beer. If you can handle two a day that's great. Some people drink 4-5 beers but only Fri.-Sat. There are no rules.
I usually smoke more than once a day, but somedays not at all. Make what you know are correct choices for yourself.
got few quick question, how often should i clean my pipe? after every use or? if i got out, and want to take my pipe with me, is it oki to keep in in my pocket or should i get box for it? i am use to rolling my own cigarettes, and can it damage the pipe if i use for example golden virginia i mean is there any risk? and last but not least, how can you tell if your pipe is getting bad, will it smell bad or something like that?
@the2014 I always suggest you clean the pipe during and after each use by running a pipe cleaner through it. That keeps me from having to do "deep cleaning" so often.
I have a Brebbia Silver Star briar, and usually smoke Holger Danske Black Vanilla tobacco. Pipe smoking is a great hobby. I`m looking to get a Meerschaum soon.
So I went out and bought my first briar pipe, which is actually my first pipe, and before I had heard anything about trying to carbonize the bowl, or any methods of doing so, I packed the thing full and smoked it. Is this damaging to the pipe?
Love you video's Sir. Your tips for loading, taring, and tamping have given me a lot coller of a smoke, and the tips for the corncobs have been great! The pipe your holding at the end of the video (7:40 mark), is that a briar pipe with a meerschaum shank on the end, and if so where did you find it?
The local "pipe-shop" in my town, I think, only have Chacom. I've been thinking of buying a briar Bent pipe. I costs about 700SKR (Swedish kronor) which is about 60$ (I think). Would that be a could buy, or should I look for other pipes?
dr. grabow briar pipes are pretty inexpensive. you can get a number of styles for 25 bucks or less, and they look pretty nice. i bought a "savoy" bent pipe for 23 from my local drug store. it comes with a filter, which gives you the option to take your smoke straight or use the inexpensive filters.
I couldn't tell you. I average more than two bowls a day and spend more time cleaning the pipe than my mouth and haven't had any problems. For legal reasons I would NOT say something like "2 bowls a week isn't any more dangerous that most of the other things you're exposed to."
Any type of smoking is a risk and although most pipe smokers don't inhale its still a risk that pipe smokers accept. Pipe smoking is more about relaxation and the benefits derived from it. By the same token, if you're worried about the health issues from pipe smoking you should also be concerned with the kinds of food you eat, how much exercise you do etc.
@RDog Like anything else, what's "bad" about tobacco is it's abused. Smoking 20 cigs a day (one pack) is a lot. Eating 20 cheeseburgers a day for 30 yrs is also stupid. You got problem now? No Duh! Doesn't mean cheeseburgers are bad.

eric - I haven't gone through your entire series yet, but in this vid about getting a first pipe, you didn't say anything about filters - what's your opinion on them and do you use them? thanks, d'Pappy
I don't use filters. When I buy pipes that take them, the first thing I do is yank them out. I like the unobstructed airway, and I also feel more comfortable being able to run a pipe cleaner through during the smoke rather than rely on a filter to absorb the moisture.
All that said, I suggest everyone try their favorite blends with and without filters as I did to find out what they prefer. Many pipe smokers, much more seasoned than I swear by them. Thanks for the question!
Thanks for the speedy reply, Eric - I'm enjoying the vids - one last query on the topic: if you purchase a pipe machined for a filter, then decide you'd rather not use one, do you need to fit an insert or adapter in the space where the filter went? It's just I saw a German pipe seller online offering such a device and was wondering if it was, in your opinion, necessary. Thanks again, d'Pappy
I love my corncob and my favorite pipe is also a low-budget-pipe (it cost me around $35). Brands like Vauen, Peterson and Molina offer low cost pipes with a pretty good quality. So, you may start with one of them. Smoking a pipe more often than once a day can be possible if you don't smoke an aromated tobacco. With a pure VA it could work. But smoking a flavored one will end in a stinky pipe if you use it every day.
I have to confess my experiment was not performed with aromatic pipe tobacco. Smoking a aromatic (or any type of tobacco) will certainly leave ghost flavors, but even the most stubborn can usually be smoked out. Beyond that, I don't see it damaging the pipe.
u made alot of god points out there,,really enjoyed the discussion,,cobs r great indeed i hv my share of these bad guys,,they r always fresh,,estates its becoming a trade on ebay and many get folled by the descriptions sadly,,i have a massive rotation yet in the begining i used to hv couple of pipes and as u said i used to smoke them daily without complains yet good care should b taken
Great series. I was browsing some how to videos on pipe smoking, and yours were the most helpful.

mrsraganyoung 1 year ago
would you get away with smoking "roll up cig" tobacco in a pipe or does it need to be strictly for a pipe ?????
FlattyRatty 1 year ago
@FlattyRatty you neeed to break it down with scissors or a marijuana grinder (depending on how fine it is)

@FlattyRatty
Ive done it and depending on the blend it works great it burns slow, taste great, gives off lots of smoke.

I had been smoking a pipe off & on for about 18 years now.
There are a couple of times I have had to go get some pipes to "start over", I got 1 corncob & 1 Dr. Grabow. Smoke one one day let it "rest" the next.
Corncob pipes are my favorite.

@Roydog135 Well, you're at a much lower risk of Lung Cancer or Mouth Cancer than if you used Snus, Snuf or Cigarettes/Cigars.
Twice a week is fine. There are people who smoke 4 packs a day and live 60 years. Any damage is negligable
