whether the pretense is over the top or not, smiling even a fake one lifts a person's mood. As well the customers would be happier. I wish cashiers at target and walmart would smile more.
I like it becuase it is polite for emplyees to smile in japan.. The customer is king and an unhappy emplyee could be the result of an unhappy customer.
I feel sorry for these employees. Yes, I'm sure we need technologies to force people to put on a fake smile so their managers are happy as the money rolls in. Nevermind the employees actually needing to be happy. It's amazing how no one is noticing the encroaching 1984 world we're living in.
Idiots .. everyone with half a brain knows the old saying, "The eyes are the window to the soul." Meaning, the real smile is in the eyes, not on the lips.
I'd be more insulted by a fake smile than a real frown.
This is a great Idea and should be implemented in all American Government Agencies where direct contact with the public is necessary :) because it usually looks like they hate thier job and dont care about the customer.
Is this so bad? People exercise their bodies to look better - why not their faces?
OTOH, I don't have a corporate overseer requiring me to go to the gym in order to keep my job. Are the executives and board members required to take the smile tests? Of course not - it's merely another form of employee subjugation.

IN U.S., retail workers even don't say "Thank you ."

@109mytiger I do, and I say "Have a nice day" and "Hello welcome to _____" as well.

Being Japanese means always having to endure the stress of pretending to smile. We smile only in order not to lose our job.

it's not fake, company really requires you to smile. one smile can change the world.

If only JR would take up this scheme. Their station workers are the rudest, most miserable people in Japan in my experience!
rupazer0 2 years ago
Of course, the downside of that is that the smile will be permanently stuck on their faces after awhile.

this is just another way for japanese people to be even more talented at masking their contempt for appearing to be happy for the collective.
