I went to a catholic school since I was a 3 till my 17 & the 1st. tiime I heard about the death, murder, torture and homicide of Jesus I wondered: Why God dint save us without killing his son? This story is way to cruel. The yrs. passed & I wondered why the fear & the constant sacrifice to demonstrate "good behavior" to an "entity" that needs to see humans cry & suffer in order to believe in their capacity of loving and living. Love is discipline, time, joy & peace not the fear religions teaches
Stef, how do you manage to deal with daily life knowing everything you do for your family, bills etc... are part of that big cell called society which DO CONTROLS and at the same time HELPS you to BE everyday.
Society: Religion, politics & patriotism specially to have control infringe FEAR to people. And it has being like that since the beginning of "civilization" but in part its necessary with some people to be under control to avoid massive violence and crime (Even though OBVIOUSLY those still exist), can you imagine? no law & no fear of consequences, the city would be a crazy house. There's really Mean, cruel and twisted people out there.
I asked the christians + studied Bible independently about the same thing about Jesus and many other "contradictions" in Bible. But tell me please, desn't your life appear as a contradictory phenomenon? I bet if the human kind analyses himself deeper and deeper you'll understand why the SACRIFICE was needed to save the humanity. You are using the word "love". Materialists have to call their care for smb using another word, as "love" is way broader and explained in Bible in a deeeeeep way....
@Damynine Love has been around way before the Bible, and offers a bull explaination that is not logical or proven in any way. and you are wrong, if God wants to forgive mankind, to say that a vain spectacle of having his son that is himself too, die on a cross it absolutely ridiculous.
@movewatch26 The bible explanation is something you did not read. Even if you read it you won't get it quickly, becouse it's more "transcendental" than most of the books a mankind had the divine inspiration to write. Why you use the word "logical" ? i dont think your life and you are logical, as well as everything else in the universe. it's all relative. The structures do exist though, and Bible shows on of these "structures". Love is a logorhythm. Mulineux's logorhythm doesn't express universe.
@Damynine Have read it, sorry to burst your Bible bubble, and I was really unimpressed, i like many Atheists are drawn to the many glaring issues in it, like, "Why, if the Bible is divinely inspired is there no mention of any of the scientific discoveries made after that point? God didn't know yet either? He didn't want to spoil the surprise? Come on. And on top of that, i really don't think you know what a "logorhythm" (it's logarithm) is. Love is best explained by Biology/Evolution
I always fucking HATED how kids as young as 8 have to go to First Confession. Yes, let's teach children to identify with their faults and make them realize just how "bad" they really are. So damn evil. I had to LIE during my first confession because I didn't KNOW what a sin WAS!!!
lack of integrity creates a cognitive dissonance (and also an emotional dissonance). So does that mean there is some sort of prior intuition of truth against wich false beliefs are measured? You seem to suggest we instead arrive at this truth through rational thought. But is there really such thing as rational thought process? isn't something true on one level but false on another (paradox)? All conclusions are dependant on the point of view.
Superb and inspriring series, Stef. One thing I got out of these videos is the close interactions between philosophy and psychology. Inextricable, really.
Stef, I just thought I would pause the video game long enough to let you know how much fun I've had listening to at least 5 of your videos today! (It's a my off day, so that's how I have the time sit around haha)
I was told by Christians at my university that 'there are thousands of scrolls and parchments that confirm Jesus and God' and I said to them, 'There are thousands of books and articles to confirm Social Darwinism. They were used to justify the use of a variety of 'races' as slaves but it doesn't necessarily make it 'right''. Their response was, 'But this is the word of God'... how do you get through to people who are so set in their ways?
Well, I've been drawn to watch this 3rd video and notice a pattern... you start out very good, but you follow up theories don't make any sense... Meaning is not the opposite of Integrity. Integrity is perceived, where as Meaning is a Definition. All constructs of our society requires Meaning and Definition. We define angles, lengths, words and so on so that we know how to behave. Integrity is perceived for the external. I am not perfect, but I feel I have integrity. Someone may disagree.
ive watchd all of these videos to find some kind of contructive answer... some way out of this desert of doubt. well, i'm still working in the desert. why live?
Very interesting. One thing I don't wholly agree with (or maybe don't grasp the meaning of) is the equation of happiness to anything concrete (i.e. integrity). Happiness is the release of tensions, dopamine, etc. that occur in response to a stimuli, such as the safety of having an identity or environment which protects you from..death. Holding beliefs that are consistent with the greatest number of objective, testable "facts" isn't more "true", just a more sustainable illusion.
Hmmmm that's a good point, I see what you are saying. However it can be argued that we need to reason up from the evidence we are given. If for say, my spouse is beating me, I need to be honest with myself from the given evidence that this is making me unhappy and there is no evidence that I will be happy any other time soon. This evidence from the situation will then allow me to make a decision of reason, which is to leave my spouse because it does not make me happy.
Thank you, Stephan! I see clearly that integrity is the purpose of our lives as humans. This is very liberating. I hope that this truth will spread so we can avoid many generations of needless suffering and pain.
a bit confused, surely by us rejecting religion n ra ra ra all these false identitys, surely by accepting that there is no meaning is a false identity itself? to believe in no meaning instead of meaning is surely looking for a meaning?
That life has no meaning is something that's been percolating among my thoughts of late but never would have been able to articulate as well as you have. However, I was never afflicted with any of the other baggage in need of rejection you talked about so, while most entertaining, wasn't of much use to me personally. I was hoping you would have gone more into what to replace meaning with once you've rejected it. I don't know how I want to use my life & I don't know how to go about finding out.
I agree with what this guy has to say but it would have been nice if he could have given a little more insight on what one does after they have rejected meaning
He would be a hypocrite if he were to tell you what to do after you reject external meaning, he would be providing you with an identity. What you do after is entirely up to you.
Have you (or anyone else know if stefbot) made a video about how to influence someone's psychology or change someone's mind that is resistant to these reality truths that are being talked about?
Segg, I don't know, but the best thing I can think of is to just present these truths in a logical way, and above all, slowly explain starting with basics. It may take weeks/ months/ forever, it is up to the person concerned how willing they are to work things out logically.
Worst thing you can do is start with the conclusion, such as "I believe in Anarchy!" etc. Most people have been taught to fear and loath these things for the better part of their lives. Changing their view is difficult.
Also, remain calm. Remember coercion is what we stand against.
It's been 2 months of convincing my parents that philosophy is not a waste of time, and I'm still not there. 10 Months of presenting stateless society as the best option, and other truths .
Even though they complain about all forms of government, and present the same arguments we use, they refuse to accept the conclusion of these things because for nearly 50 years they've been told it is evil. I may not ever get through to them.
In the process, know the limits. Be aware there is only so much that someone can take, and that by pushing them further, you run the risk of alienating yourself from them. Not a nice feeling if it is a loved one, so just go slow and know when to change the subject. Good luck!
I do not posit that integrity exists, any more than I posit that the scientific method or logic itself exists -- which does not mean that it is subjective. :)
Meaning of life - The improvement of ones soul through positive life experinces raising there quality of life as well as those around them. Thats the meaning of life to me, and it works for everyone those that dont believe in religion as well as those that do.
I think (early) experience's effect on psychology and personality are greatly exaggerated and aren't even based on evidence, but asking people about it, while there exist evidence that personality are mostly nature and not nurture, and anything derived from nurture are ultimately derived from nature anyway.
Great stuff Stef. Really enjoyed this one and have enjoyed many of your other output for about 18 months now. You did mention patriotism/nationality as one of the empty vessels into which the delude invest themselves. I agree entirely. I have thought as much for many years. I wonder if you could dedicate a podcast to just this subject, viz nationalism(nationnality) and patriotism.
The screeching ad hominem attacks ("cowardly", "slithering", "psychotic") are unseemly and mar an otherwise pretty rational argument. More familiarity with Christian philosophy (try Augustine) would clear up some of your confusion, however, regarding God and time, Christ's passion, the problem of evil, Jesus and the prophets, etc. Congratulations on your baby girl!
It's called cognitive dissonance. It's a symptom of mysticism.
One should always be critical of their beliefs being challenged for if one holds a false belief the sooner they learn it is false the better off they are for having gained a firming footing in reality.
Tooth fairy, flying Santa Clause and Easter bunny. Three lies told to young, innocent children with clean minds. Lies told in the name of fun.
Young children are so precious because they are innocent and inquisitive, seeking assistance of their parents in accurately identifying reality. Yet they distort reality with lies in the name of fun.
god didnt create people, people created god, unless god is something really really different from what we think god is, or what he is and what he stands for.
you actually make sense, if people are looking for an answer, they should watch your videos, then they can make their decisions of how to live their lives.
This is an interesting train of thought... but what if there is no internal meaning, purpose or reason either? What if there is no authenticity, no 'true' self, no virtue? Could it be possible we are nothing more than social animals born with the instinctual need for external scripts? Maybe we need these scripts, and if you strip them away we will be rendered empty nobodies... just a thought...
I find that most of your videos employ the use of hypnotic or suggestive techniques. For example, the red background may inject a sense of aggressiveness, exert a sense of domination and stir up emotions in your audience. Your occasional pauses with the camera zooming into your face is also a very powerful tool that makes people more agreeable with what you're about to say next.
Consciously or unconsciously, I feel you are using subtle psychological techniques to make ur audience more agreeable
You've made a pretty good video espousing the weaknesses of religious ideologies. However, I'm afraid you're still slightly ambiguous with regards to addressing whether we should be 'preaching' this mentality to other ppl. It would be overimposing and very pompous of us if we told other ppl how they should perceive life. However, it would be criminal negligience if we let ppl continue living in their falsehoods. How do u address this moral issue? If life has no meaning, does it even matter?
The bible is MEANT to be a SPIRITUAL document, not a historic nor scientific. It is MEANT to show timeless values, which are THOUGHT to be correct. Of course, I would say there is no CORRECT way to live your life, just that some will lead to more happiness/less pain.
Thanks, Stefan. Your videos have given me a lot of hope, especially the ones on the meaning of life. For a while I thought that in order to be happy one must give up the search for truth, but you seem to be a fulfilled, strong-willed person who has not adopted any worldview except for reality.
stefbot please study Jiddu krishinamurti e open a litle bit more your conditioned mind before posting a video about such a subeject, you can find many videos from him in youtube.
Actually, it's their holy books that command my murder, so you might want to reassess that statement. I neither swear at them nor say they should be killed.
Stef, no PERSON is commanding your murder. I know you use that argument all the time but it's a strawman. Saying their beliefs are disgusting isn't going to convince them.
Actually, their gods command it, and he is their highest moral ideal. And millions are murdered in the name of those gods every decade. And who says I want to convince religious people?
You can point to the bible all you want but believe it or not these people aren't out to kill you. Is your goal not to help people be more rational and "virtuous?" You certainly aren't helping your cause by insulting them.
actually the qu'ran only says that all those that don't convert, which they label "infidels," will be burning in hell blah blah blah. But it never actually says in the qu'ran that muslims are supposed to convert or kill non-believers. It says that non-believers will meet their own fate by the hand of god. Its the religious extremist groups that use some of the more inflammatory statements in the qu'ran and combine it with political rhetoric to manipulate some of their own people.
Stefan, what about those modern Christians who are very New Age, despite themselves, and they think (in a very Hindu way) that all religions are a revelation of God, and so these people feel that as long as a human being is believing in God (no matter what religion) then all is good and in order. How do you cut through that bullshit?
The concept of money is perverted. Why should I have to pay for anything, on a planet I was born on? Need should be the only requirement for receiving. A country is a tribe, as is a religion, as is skin color or anything that places false boundaries. Freedom is just another word, for nothing left to lose. The only person you can ever change, is yourself. Everyone, no matter how creepy, believes they are a good guy. There is no such thing as an honest man because everyone has something to sell.
When we sell anything, we are not objective because the objective is to make the sale. So, we tout the good selling points and conveniently leave out all the doubts, grey areas and use appropriate hyperbola, after all we're trying to make the sale. Everyone has something to sell, even if it is only themself. Honesty and selling are therefore the most basic of life dichotomys.
You must have a buyer present in order to become a seller my friend... If the buyer cares about their purchase, they will seek out potential deficiencies before making an exchange. Buying/selling of goods is a voluntary process. No one forces you to do it.
Great vid, i feel inspired by the fact that there is a voice like yours amongst all this rubble of shiny diversive information. I agree with you very strongly, i hope to learn to think and talk so clearly and with such confidence.
A question: what is your stance on feelings and emotion? Would you strive to reject them as an apeolute rationalist? I'm a bit tied up in work so I can't browse through all of your posts to find your position on the matter just yet.
Really excellent video. I found the part about emotional reactions especially interesting. People really hate to have their beliefs challenged, perhaps the best way is to first get them to accept that challenging beliefs with reason is the only way to check them for truth, and work from there. Rather than starting off with "your parents lied to you and you're lying to your children".
a year does not exist in empirical reality, however the earth orbits the sun at a stable rate of speed. in other words, the concept 'year' does not exist except in the minds of human beings, however the concept is objective because it is based upon the observation of empirical reality.
There is no secular evidence for Jesus. There are about 6 characters who mimic Jesus'. Your argument of 300 is argument from populism and authority. Show the evidence and let us decide if Jesus is real. As far as my research has gone I am pretty damn skeptical Jesus ever existed.
Yet another great video Stef, thanks. And I like your measured response to everwhat999 - a very Christian attitude if I may say so!
English comedian Marcus Brigstocke has uploaded his hysterical (and hysterically funny) BBC rant against the Abrahamic religions - just key "Brigstocke religion" and you'll find it. Well worth a listen.
So ... how will you raise your doughter? Will you bring her up to see the world as it is, making her life really hard and likely punished for her beliefs ... or will you choose the easy path?
I'm asking only becouse I don't know what I would do, thankfully I don't have to make my mind up on that issue in a long long time, but still ..Of course the _right_ thing to do is to raise one's children with truth, but will one really do that?
So if there was lets say an international crisis, like a big natural disastor,an earthquake or something else, how would an anarchistic society, world deal with it? Since there will be no goverments who would represent the different countries and such and who will take the decisions in order to deal with the problem?
excellent question! first, if you recall New Orleans and the tsunami, they are not being dealt with now. Second, private charities and agencies will far more effectively deal with these disasters - and prevent them too, where possible. :)
to joshv89: the question is, how will a violent organization that forces people to comply deal with the problems better than voluntary associations between people?
when he says "people are lying to themselves" does he mean they are consciously lying but they can some how get around it or are they unaware that they are lying to themselves?
Ya. I watched your "Meaninglessness" video and I had to conclude, based on the evidence, that your conceptualisation of meaning is rather limited in range and narrow in scope.
Could it be that producing these videos gives meaning to this blindness of yours?
My main concern is that Stefbot claims not to be a nihilist, and I don't know why. As for myself, I think that nihilism often leads to anomie. I guess I'm wondering how there can be objective standards without objective meaning.
Oh, yeah I wonder what stef would have to say about that. Personally I don't think there are objective standards. If it leads to anomie does that make it untrue?
Of course not, by my rejection of nihilism is beyond the scope of this comment thread. Email my youtube account if you want to continue that discussion. What I want to know is how Stefbot can rationally claim that both nihilism and objective meaning are invalid.
"Happy New Year!" to you and your family, Stefan, and lets hope that the year 2009, will bring many more people into becoming of strong integrity (thus "saved", as you call it) such as yourself.
"Freedomind Radio" Good Show..I have a headache now, thank you. Happy New Year! Two questions: How does one unwind belief systems within oneself in order to start searching for truth? Then, how do I identify "truth" when I see it?
For me the truth is ultimately, our own -irrefutable- errors. As for our belief systems, it is important to question them and verify them empirically and rationally.
If only this kind of thinking is widespread.

I was hoping you would have gone more into what to replace meaning with once you've rejected it. I don't know how I want to use my life & I don't know how to go about finding out.
joshd321 3 years ago
yea man i share the same view as you.
I agree with what this guy has to say but it would have been nice if he could have given a little more insight on what one does after they have rejected meaning

He would be a hypocrite if he were to tell you what to do after you reject external meaning, he would be providing you with an identity. What you do after is entirely up to you.

Have you (or anyone else know if stefbot) made a video about how to influence someone's psychology or change someone's mind that is resistant to these reality truths that are being talked about?
seggallion8 3 years ago
Segg, I don't know, but the best thing I can think of is to just present these truths in a logical way, and above all, slowly explain starting with basics. It may take weeks/ months/ forever, it is up to the person concerned how willing they are to work things out logically.
Worst thing you can do is start with the conclusion, such as "I believe in Anarchy!" etc. Most people have been taught to fear and loath these things for the better part of their lives. Changing their view is difficult.
corruptiblelogistics 3 years ago
Also, remain calm. Remember coercion is what we stand against.
It's been 2 months of convincing my parents that philosophy is not a waste of time, and I'm still not there. 10 Months of presenting stateless society as the best option, and other truths .
Even though they complain about all forms of government, and present the same arguments we use, they refuse to accept the conclusion of these things because for nearly 50 years they've been told it is evil. I may not ever get through to them.
corruptiblelogistics 3 years ago
In the process, know the limits. Be aware there is only so much that someone can take, and that by pushing them further, you run the risk of alienating yourself from them. Not a nice feeling if it is a loved one, so just go slow and know when to change the subject. Good luck!

If meaning doesn't exist, why do you posit integrity exists?

If life has no meaning, does it even matter?
strongman82 3 years ago
The bible is MEANT to be a SPIRITUAL document, not a historic nor scientific. It is MEANT to show timeless values, which are THOUGHT to be correct. Of course, I would say there is no CORRECT way to live your life, just that some will lead to more happiness/less pain.

The same could be said about your attitude towards religious people.
TheDrifter55 3 years ago
Actually, it's their holy books that command my murder, so you might want to reassess that statement. I neither swear at them nor say they should be killed.
stefbot 3 years ago
Stef, no PERSON is commanding your murder. I know you use that argument all the time but it's a strawman. Saying their beliefs are disgusting isn't going to convince them.
TheDrifter55 3 years ago
Actually, their gods command it, and he is their highest moral ideal. And millions are murdered in the name of those gods every decade. And who says I want to convince religious people?
stefbot 3 years ago
You can point to the bible all you want but believe it or not these people aren't out to kill you. Is your goal not to help people be more rational and "virtuous?" You certainly aren't helping your cause by insulting them.
TheDrifter55 3 years ago
They cherry pick, remember?
TheDrifter55 3 years ago
How cowardly. Their holy books command my death. I point out that this is immoral and offensive, and you say I am "insulting" them. Grow a spine.
stefbot 3 years ago
I am pretty sure that some muslims interpret the Qu'ran to which they believe they must force non-muslims to either convert, or be killed.
Celebration2000 3 years ago
actually the qu'ran only says that all those that don't convert, which they label "infidels," will be burning in hell blah blah blah.
Cougar604 3 years ago
That's what I figured, I was a bit skeptical when I read it. Just more people reading too much into things, as always haha.
Celebration2000 3 years ago
Stefan, what about those modern Christians who are very New Age, despite themselves, and they think (in a very Hindu way) that all religions are a revelation of God, and so these people feel that as long as a human being is believing in God (no matter what religion) then all is good and in order. How do you cut through that bullshit?
stephenetienne 3 years ago
The concept of money is perverted. Why should I have to pay for anything, on a planet I was born on? Need should be the only requirement for receiving. A country is a tribe, as is a religion, as is skin color or anything that places false boundaries. Freedom is just another word, for nothing left to lose. The only person you can ever change, is yourself. Everyone, no matter how creepy, believes they are a good guy. There is no such thing as an honest man because everyone has something to sell.
rollsthepaul 3 years ago
what does being honest have to do with "having something to sell?
snipa4lyfe 3 years ago
When we sell anything, we are not objective because the objective is to make the sale. So, we tout the good selling points and conveniently leave out all the doubts, grey areas and use appropriate hyperbola, after all we're trying to make the sale. Everyone has something to sell, even if it is only themself. Honesty and selling are therefore the most basic of life dichotomys.
rollsthepaul 3 years ago
You must have a buyer present in order to become a seller my friend... If the buyer cares about their purchase, they will seek out potential deficiencies before making an exchange. Buying/selling of goods is a voluntary process. No one forces you to do it.

Jacko86plus5 3 years ago
a year does not exist in empirical reality, however the earth orbits the sun at a stable rate of speed. in other words, the concept 'year' does not exist except in the minds of human beings, however the concept is objective because it is based upon the observation of empirical reality.

There is no secular evidence for Jesus. There are about 6 characters who mimic Jesus'. Your argument of 300 is argument from populism and authority. Show the evidence and let us decide if Jesus is real. As far as my research has gone I am pretty damn skeptical Jesus ever existed.

Even if you prove beyond doubt that Jesus 'the man' existed, that in no way proves he was the 'son of god', and in no way proves the existence of god

So if there was lets say an international crisis, like a big natural disastor,an earthquake or something else, how would an anarchistic society, world deal with it? Since there will be no goverments who would represent the different countries and such and who will take the decisions in order to deal with the problem?

I thought the definition of a nihilist is one who claims there is no objective meaning. If not, why not?
billyjoeallen 3 years ago
Why do you need there to be an objective meaning and what is so horrible about nihilism?
TheDrifter55 3 years ago
My main concern is that Stefbot claims not to be a nihilist, and I don't know why. As for myself, I think that nihilism often leads to anomie. I guess I'm wondering how there can be objective standards without objective meaning.
billyjoeallen 3 years ago
Oh, yeah I wonder what stef would have to say about that. Personally I don't think there are objective standards. If it leads to anomie does that make it untrue?
TheDrifter55 3 years ago
Of course not, by my rejection of nihilism is beyond the scope of this comment thread. Email my youtube account if you want to continue that discussion. What I want to know is how Stefbot can rationally claim that both nihilism and objective meaning are invalid.

It takes a very strong person, to be able to avoid the ritualistic spiritual lives most of us live. Perhaps a superman, in todays societies.
We all use day to day rituals concerning our physical well being, and intellectual.
A great number of humans go beyond these, performing spiritual rituals.
Unfortunately, these
have at their core false beliefs, used to trick our brains like placebo pills do.
People identify themselves with the old traditions and culture of their forefathers.
