I've lost ten cats in the past ten days. Three last year in September, too. Wasn't until two days ago when a neighbour mentioned some sightings that it kinda clicked. Now that I hear this, I'm convinced. I'd figured it was some bird I heard. As far as encroaching goes, we've been here 22 years with no sign of them for the first 19. I'm pro-animal rights, but they can NOT stay here. If the MNR can't help trap and transport, they must die.

I heard something very similar to this at 10pm last night, periodic screaming for maybe 20 minutes, in the woods near our house, like kids or women screaming their heads off in the distance. It was very similar pitch and similar pauses but maybe slightly longer screams and slightly more complex sounds. And our neighbors have seen fishers in the woods in past years. (Shelburne, Mass).

This woke me up a few nights ago and I was home alone in NH and my big German sherpard was freaking out, i hear it all the time but it's scary as hell.
I was just about to go to bed at 3 am. I was just telling my friend about a camping trip years ago when I first heard one of these God awful creatures. Well it just so happens that for the second time in my life I got to hear one. Luckily this time I know what it is but the first time I heard it I thought it was someone being murdered. I ventured into the woods to try and locate the sound but couldn't see it. I got so close it sounded right on top of me. I thought I'd die from insanity.

It was maddening to get ever closer to that God awful sound and not be able to see where it was coming from. I thought my mind was going to explode due to it's inability to process what it was hearing and yet seeing nothing.
My wife just woke me up at 1am last night because she heard a women screaming. Next thing we knew before we could even call police an officer went flying down our street with the spotlight on and another one was on the rail trail behind our house. We went outside with a flash light and the cop came over to us. My wife said what she heard and he asked if we thought it was a fisher cat. Listening to this that is a creepy ass noise and I could mistake it for a women screaming....I hope this is it.
Stupid fisher cat ate my boyfriends pomeranian, I'm too scared to let my 3 pd mates out at night to go potty, I feel bad for making him hold it but , its too risky letting him out in the dark , even if I'm with him.
Interesting sound..porcupines sound three kinds of drastic too... when they are mating....no, I don't think it's the male getting poked...it's the female that's getting poked (we knew that, right?) If your bush-walk took longer than you thought and were without a flashlight, it makes the hair on your neck stand a little and you find yourself looking around for a good solid oak stick.
the rest of my note: After 10 minutes of this noise, i let my dog go to the window and bark, it stopped a few minutes after that. OMG, i never want to hear that again. So many small pets go missing where i live, i cant believe that people are not more aware of this dangerous animal. Moral of the story, dont let your pets go out at night, if you hear crying, its probably not a cute little baby!! yark

Fisher do not vocalize like this at all. They don't scream alone in the night. This is a red fox. Oh internet, will you ever learn?
There are a couple of these in the swamp behind my house, they are really loud. I have caught one at the end of the driveway but could only see eyes, it was small, I'm thinking a fisher/Marten. I think it sounds a lot more scary then it really is.

Maybe. You may be right. There are lots of fox around here. Its very hard to say without actually seeing the creature involved. It sounds a lot like a fisher, as well as a fox. Seems to be a media blackout on Fisher sounds.

It's a red fox. One followed my cat home the other night screaming at the end of my driveway. I saw it. Horrible sounds.

honstly i think its a fisher. i heard these exact calls last night around midnight. i do have foxes on my street bit they've never done anything like that before. i admit i was freakin out coz they were legit right outside my window. another reason i was freakin' out was earlier i was watching this murder mystery show (no those stupid fake ones) and there was a woman screaming. i over react sometimes. but anyways i believe that was a fisher.

I have a red fox behind my house that makes the same exact call around every spring. Def sounds like a fox to me. Fishers have a much more distinct call, and there doesn't seem to be any clips online. I'll return if I do find a soundclip of one...or I'll wait and record one near me lol

i was being silly one night in upstate new york, making a crop circle in an alfalfa feild behind my house. (not kidding just for fun). but something screeched at me and scared the you know what out of me. i believe it was a fisher , hearing the noise again.it started off as a low dog-like growl , then screeched like a cat ready to fight. i shined a light at it but saw only it's eyes,and backed 150 yards out of the feild without taking the light off it.joked to friends it was chupcabra,lmaoo

As this was loading, I was saying, "Watch this be another black nighttime video of a red fox calling." It's amazing how many people want to think this sound is a fisher. Fisher do not vocalize like this at all. They don't scream alone in the night. This is a red fox. Oh internet, will you ever learn?

There are a couple of these in the swamp behind my house, they are really loud. I have caught one at the end of the driveway but could only see eyes, it was small, I'm thinking a fisher/Marten. I think it sounds a lot more scary then it really is.

Maybe. You may be right. There are lots of fox around here. Its very hard to say without actually seeing the creature involved. It sounds a lot like a fisher, as well as a fox. Seems to be a media blackout on Fisher sounds.

I live in Upstate NY and there has been an explosion in the Fisher population here,
word has it DEC has been releasing them.
Last June, while a Neighbor stepped out, a Fisher busted in her screen window and ate her nursing Cat and Kittens.
She had seen it around but unfortunately had no idea how dangerous it was. Is there really a need for MORE of them around ?? Damn DEC !

@henzlee The red fox has more of a howling yell which to me sounds like what you have here..the fisher cat sounds more like a baby crying in pain and makes you cringe no matter how many times you hear it.
