for who doesnt see art here. art is in THE CHOICE of the artist of creating an aesthetic operation. Is not just strike a pose but also finding visual elements to create an idea, an image. She is pós-conceptual, even if is conceptual, but different from the "pure conceptualists", she is worried about the beauty, the quality of the image.
@blueingreentrain "good art involves craft" = WRONG! good art is balanced on many more elements such as creativity, originality, historical attinence, emotional force, experimentation ecc. craftmanship is only a tool, and not the most relevant among others
@KEPHALLE all I said is that her work is well crafted and that good art (involves) craft (which it does) usually. Of course, there's more to it than that, but I think she is a good example of this. I fully appreciate the legality and importance of the expression of opinion and this is why I did not appreciate the whole "WRONG" thing in your earlier comment. You may be underestimating craft and I'd like to remind you that this high vs. low art debate has been going on for the last 2 millennia
@blueingreentrain i got your point, and to some extent you're right. by experience anyway, as i work in an art gallery, due to the intellectual lazyness of many, craft often is chosen as an "easy" backdoor to cover-up the lack of self expression abilities. the point is what makes craft a "good" craft and what makes it the opposite? many good crafted arworks feel shallow (example: photorealist painting). your statement appeared as an absolute truth, so i reacted too strongly; my apologizes
who is a good artist, for u?... where is the real art, then? the goog art? the absolute?.. u think only about the clasics, paint... all before the XX?... xplain...and who doesnt have a pose? a rol?.. an identity?... maybe this is what she is trying to do... expose herself as a media, a mirror...expose that everybody have masks. she becomes into "fake" bcauze thats exactly what she is talking about., with her own body... make people to think about their lives and their reality...
Maybe being Scottish has left me with a poor idea of the artistic climate in America, I think there is a lot of exciting modern and contemporary art coming out of the states.
Sherman exploits the bourgeois stereotypes placed upon woman, especially when concerning her recent work. Perhaps most americans can't understand it because she is poking fun at them.
The best what ? The best nothing... and by the way, there is no recent work for her because what she does is not a work, this is a fake person doing a fake work but sold for real dollars - definition of contemporary art.

She died in 71 ? I am happy to learn it. We are therefore free of another fake person's existence. she was just a poor litlle american girl who wanted to be somebody, to be "special". And the more she tried to be one, the more she became nothing. Her grave is a good place for her to be.
There is no controversy : this kind of snobish "contemporary" fake artists are pieces of crap. Americans can't understand it because there are tied with resentment and daydreams of success. Being an artist in America is like being a paradise bird in a pigsty.
Cindy has certainly done some freaky/wonderful/sexy/provocative/glam/make you think work over the years. She has never been boring or failed to intrigue.
I think that Sherman's early work (Film Stills)is some of the best examples of the self-portrait genre, although I still need convinving over her later work.
Cindy
You are a genius. I love your work. There are only one of your kind!

What are you talking about? Diane Arbus died in 1971. I was commenting that in my opinion that DA was a superior photographer/artist.
