  • irish music means a lot to irish people wherever they live, and however they identify. my grandparents were irish but it was the irish i grew up with in england so i feel like a cultural mix. i'm not 'as english' as english friends nor am i 'as irish' as my irish family who live there. i love the music and the culture and support the irish in a historical manner, but hate just detracts from your spirit, it's been too long now, sometimes you gotta sit back and enjoy the beautiful music.

  • This music holds a lot of meaning for irish people and we can be emotional !!! Love it for the voice, the tone, the air and the more importantly, how it makes you feel.

Political opinion is best kept for another place.!

    Go raibh maith agaibh!

  • so sweet sad, and... beautiful

  • This song is a well-known tester, deceptively simple, requiring accurate pitching & tempo - you nailed it Cara.

(Does anyone remember Mick jagger in the film about Ned Kelly sounding like he was vomitting all over the microphone?!?! Utterly revolting.)

  • I am in love with her and her vocals.

  • god this is so beautiful

  • You`ve done Dungiven proud girl, Beautiful voice control, very professional,

I`m from Coleraine by the way, and you`ve made a 44yr old man cry.

    Thanks mate!

  • @MrRexBailey She is the only good thing out of Dungiven.

  • Beautiful

  • Shes one of my favourite Irish singers :)

  • One of my favorite songs

  • The brightest lights will always shine through...Cara is a blessed soul, i heard her for the first time today and already a fan, she has a beautiful spirit and it shows... i wish her all the best : )

  • I don't give a damn where she's from my friends she's bloody good singer & that's fine enough for me, what a voice! Thank you for uploading it!

  • I like when they just play the same note for the whole song - much more haunting

  • its about the great voice and how well cara sings it, not about political reasons and religion. superb voice and superb version of this great song!

  • The one problem with watching Irish videos on youtube: Politics inevitably rears it's ugly head. Has Irish history taught all of you nothing? Violence begets violence, and dwelling in the past brings no comfort. America and Britain are on good terms now because neither country wished to hold onto their grudges. It's time you forget yours, for the good of your homeland.

  • This song has always haunted me...so sad, so full of pathos. The music alone is enough to make me weep. Sung well, it's devastating--but lingers in the soul like a deep red rose...which have thorns, but whose perfume always intoxicates. True magic, here.

  • @reelintina You really capture the emotion of this great song-Cara does it justice-cheers.

  • @reelintina beautifuly written thanks for sharing ....

  • oh how I love voices like this.

  • nope, not as good as loreena ;)

  • SUPER ! Vielen Dank.

  • shes pregnant?

  • why do you spell it thru this isn't Macdonalds

  • 4 dislikes? really? maybe they were too drunk to hit the right button...

  • Thank you for sharing. Added to vocals / voice playlist with Love & Appreciation:)

  • omg. who start this british irish things... come on, u speak da same language

  • @sarahx87 I agree with you. I think both sides have had their say. I won't be approving any more comments on either side of this argument.

  • @6073114 I actually hate how amazing music videos and performances, without a doubt, have comments on Irish and English hatred. I mean, most people don't even appreciate the music, they just want to bring up the past. I'm English and I love Irish music and musicians etc. I don't understand why there's a big fuss over ruining videos...go get a chat room started up for that.

  • @sarahx87 They didn't always I think thats why

  • For those who've asked - "kine" means cow. The more cows you had the more wealthy you were - the song is stating that her father won't turn him away or stop the marriage because he doesn't have cows!

  • really a beautiful folksong...greetings from turkey to eire.

  • Brirish ?? She was born on the isle of Ireland. She's Irish... ye try to claim everything.. And another thing Georgie Best was Irish too. Not British.. Clowns

  • @GazzaMazza23 Could you help your American cousins understand this comment and explain a little more?

  • @6073114 no problem. What I meant by that comment is everytime somebody in Northern Ireland does well on the world stage i.e cara dillon, and to more of an extent george best. the great footballer. (please google if you do not know him) the british claim that they are british. The english media will try to claim anybody famous that is from the north of Ireland. As far as Im concerned if you were born in Ireland either north or south you are Irish. Northern Irish if you please but Irish.

  • @GazzaMazza23 Now I get it. Thank you.

  • @GazzaMazza23 You are mistaken.

She's British. The easiest way to check it this out is by asking to see her British passport. Northern Ireland forms part of the Great Britain Union.

If she was Irish, she would have an Irish passport with Eire Ireland printed on its cover, like mine.

  • Gorgeous :)

  • She's one of the best singers Derry ever produced!!!!

  • every time I hear this song, I remember so clearly the scene in Braveheart in which Murron - childhood girlfriend of the Socttish hero William Wallace, moved through the watching crowd when William was to be beheaded by English. She smiled - a haunting smile that I would never forget. U all should watch that scene. FREEDOM!!!

  • I'm a "bloke" from Oz, and we aren't meant to show emotion, but I go months without listening to Cara ... and then I play her music again ... and I have the same reaction ... I get a lump in me throat!! LOL! What's with that??? Sheeez Cara, you're turning me into a wuss!! :-)

  • Very very fine, loved it

  • she makes me sadly bloody happy!geez!

  • i think this is the best version of this song, seen cara doing it live in may, and she was brill.

  • wow

  • I guess the only good word to say here is "beautiful".

  • wow, she's always so passionate..!!

  • i love her teeth! as well as her singing.

  • Beautiful.

  • The words collected by the Irish poet Padraic Colum 1909 with many versions very much depending on where in Ireland you hear it. Very much, music you learn by the hearth! A sweet verison.

  • Yes, it is "kine".

I've been singing this song for over 50 years (mm). It's a 'haunting' - when she says in the last verse "It will not be long 'til our wedding day" it's a forewarning of the song maker's death.

  • why are people so bloody obsesed with the words(lyrics for pro's haha) - what difference does it make - the song is a painting for each and every mind - its personal interpretation - thats all that matters not anybody else's irellivant opinion

  • she was pregnant when she sang this song!! so amazing!!

  • Cara should do a duet with Christopher Beecham ~ check him out herein on You Tube singing the song "Midnight" (2008 cover version). Their voices would sound absolutely Wondrous together.

  • Sam Lakeman is a lucky man.

  • at is the kind of music i like 5*

  • EEEW popsy

  • For those of us not familiar with British slang:

popsy = Old-fashioned (Brit) slang an attractive young woman (C19: diminutive formed from pop, shortened from poppet; originally a nursery term)

  • @6073114 From what I gather, the Irish do not like to be classified as Brits. I'm sure the likes of you know this.

  • @DaughterOfAsena I'm like you, I know a little about the rift between British and Irish. I just don't know specifically what caused GazzaMazza23 to make that comment. There is nothing in the comments section that identifies Cara as British.

  • the best version on youtube

  • According to the translation, the name of the guy is Till. lol. Not to speak of the terrible German syntax... Automatic translations are just no good.

But apart from that, I love this song and am glad to hear the third verse, which is often left out. Thanks for posting this!

  • @Jillaroo85

Thanks for your comments. But even more thank you for helping me with the new German translation.

  • Nice. But listen to the versions by Sandy Denny, Loreena McKennitt and Sinead O'Connor, and also Simple Minds "Belfast Child" (same tune, different, updated lyrics.)

  • she amazing

  • I love this piece its so haunting- a ghost story that tugs at the heart strings.

This version is very compelling & organic Ive posted a video response Jane Rutter

  • well it isn't hard to hear in which song Simple Minds found inspiration to their "Belfast Child"

  • Der Text ist ja völlig daneben, wer hat das denn übersetzt???

Zog sie über die Messe - German

" Sie ging über den Markt" würde hinkommen....

  • Band is miming -- disappointing.

  • Brilliant! Cara Dillons playing in Bath on the 29th of April! Can't wait to see her now!! :-)

  • Gorgeous!!!

  • Thanks for posting love her.

  • have to say, after listening to a lot of the other versions, cara's is still my favourite. the others seem to lose the rhythm to the song, despite their good vocals. cara keeps it simple and pure, still with amazing vocals, also saw it live and i shivered like nothing else lol

  • Awesome. Thanks for getting the lyrics right ("kine" and not "kind")

  • Thanks for noticing.

  • @6073114 what does it mean?

  • @OblivionHazzard kine another name for cattle.

  • @6073114 Is it not kin? Makes more sense in terms of marriage

  • @Nemoid If you google it, you find it both ways. (kine and kind) Since cattle was a measure of wealth in some societies, lack of kine would be a lack of wealth. Also, in early societies a woman would bring a dowry to her husband consisting of money or property. If the husband-to-be was a poor man, he would be happy with anything and the father could give a little less -- or slight -- a poor man. Either way, Cara does a great job on the song.

  • great rendition sandy denny would have loved this god bless bob ponton and pandamonium.

  • Feargal Sharkey's version is surprisingly good too.

  • Cara looks pregnant in this video. They say that listening to class music is good for unborn children. My guess is that baby came out a-bouncing!

  • Twins. They bounced out 3 months early - Cara went into labour during a gig.

  • I think she should do more work with Oldfield.

  • Miken Oldfield and Cara dillon are are perfect match. A musical genius and and a diva of of purest Irish vocals. Her husband Sam Lakeman is of course a superb influence

  • As a trad musician - I think this is a lovely rendition. This is how it should be sung - for the song - NOT the singer.

    Brava Cara

  • mckennit is amazing, but my favourite version is Van Morrison's with the chieftains...

  • Loreena mckennit live from the alhambra is the best version ever

  • NOOOO! loreena mckennit does this best for sure in a pure celtic sound like no other.

  • sinead is the best, but she does thisa song sooooooo well, lv u cara xxxxx

  • Ładna dziewczyna i ładny głos,ale przydałyby się jej lepsze piosenki bo przy tej można spać !

  • Great version

  • sinead is the best in it ...

  • Beautiful voice, love this song.

  • her version is very good but sinead o connors version from michael collins is deadly gives me the shivers

  • Outstanding pure talent

  • lv the fact shes pure preg, lucky child, i heard its good for the unborn to hear amazin music!

  • i love her.. Absolutely breathtaking......

  • For those who want to sing along:

My young love said to me,

    My mother won't mind

And my father won't slight you

    For your lack of kind"

And she stepped away from me

    And this she did say:

It will not be long, love,

    Till our wedding day"

  • just amazin!

  • she has such an incredible voice - never heard anything like it before. It's almost haunting, but you know, in a good way.

"The streets of Derry" is another beautiful one by her that I'd recommend

  • Thanks Snoz, I'l try it.

  • I am a rather old English person who heard this song for the first time today on radio 2 .

I would like to know if I am still hated for the polotics of history or can I join in with this appreciation of good music. I do not as far as I know have any grnandparents who are remotely Hoyrish.

I do however have ancestors who have died and been wounded in various conflicts throughout the centuries.....As we all probably have.

  • You are most definetly not hated mo chara..Certainly not by me..History is in the past and im sure you took no part in the tit for tat beatings and killings of old..She's an amazing talent..Listen to her song "There were Roses"..If you like this you will love it..Slan go Foil!!

  • you are definately not hated thats all in the past !

  • This brought a tear to my eye at Moseley 2009. Delightful.

  • Beautiful...

  • great version of this song! well done!

  • was she pregnant when they recorded this? cos im sure i saw a bump. Absolutley amazing voice tho, And incredibly beautiful. I LOVE HER

  • She was pregnant with twins. An emcee on another video introduced her and said she was having twins.

  • Was she pregnent when the recorded this? cos i swear i saw a bump. Absolutley amazing voice tho. And extremeley beautiful. I LOVE HER

  • thanks for postin, crakin stuff

  • It's/they'ra whistles. She plays a Cwhistle, and he plays a G.

  • What is the name of the flute/recorder looking instrument the one guy is playing? Cara later plays a smaller version of the same thing I think.

  • It's/they're whistles. Looks like he's playing a G and she plays a C.

  • It's commonly referred to as an Irish flute.

  • Comment removed

  • What do you call that flute like instrument?

  • mesmerising

  • I saw her live when she was 13 years-old and singing with Oige. Her voice was so incredible it brought tears to my eyes. It's sad so many Americans think of Irish folk music as the collection of drinking songs they sell at Barnes & Noble.

  • Chrisboets,

Here's one American that can tell ye that there are still those in the states that appreciate the music for more than just pub entertainment. But sadly, I do know what ye mean. Ah, weel, we can go on enjoyin it, no? Peace.

  • her syudio albums dont compare to her music both her voice and her band are incredible live, i seen her at the opera house in belfast last year, i actually dont listen to her studio albums now, only her live stuff, amazing!!!!!!!!

  • D minor, it would seem.

  • Does anyone know what key this is in?

if anyone does please get back to me

    xx

  • Comment removed

  • Key of C major. She does a lot of songs in C.

  • It's in C - mixolydian mode (so the notes of F major, but with the 'home note' as C)

  • Good reply. Quite a lot of western folk music uses the mixolydian mode. For those that find it confusing, play your major scale (C in this case) but flatten the 7th note (B = B flat in this case). Gets you an instant 'folky' feel every time.

  • This is probably a dumb question. Is this technique the same as "blue notes" in jazz and blues? If not, what is the difference?

  • *goosebumps* Very very good!!

  • Thats lovely

  • this is such a gooooooooooooood song i wish i had her album!@#$%^&*()_+

  • Her latest album, hill of thieves is available in shops and online at HMV. Good luck.

  • what kind of flute is that?!

  • its the low whistle, common enough in Ireland.

  • That's definitely the sound I think of when I think of traditional Irish music.

  • An-Dheas, ceoltoir an-maith [=

  • Saw her in Derry in October, she is an excellent live performer and I would recommend anyone to visit her concerts. You will not be disappointed.

  • almost as good as the Celtic Women :D...love her voice

  • Her voice is really unique. Really haunting and special. Nice song as well.

  • Well no, I understand that you like her voice. Her voice isn't bad, it's just the arrangement that she is singing that I don't like at all. It's a little too flighty, too much dancing around with her voice and the accompanying instruments.

I'll post our St. Olaf version in response to this I guess so you can see what I like...

  • This is the way that Irish ballad singers truly sing, it is called shannos singing. The true Irish singers sing like the dancers dance, flighty, mysterious and mischievious.

  • Séan-Nós a cara from the Gaelic Séan - old nós - style

  • What a dumb rendition of the song.

Singing this in men's choir is so much fun, it just kind of puts this to shame.

  • Is she in a band or is she signed as a solo artist? I recognise the whistler's playing from somewhere. Who is he?

  • James O'Grady - English (well his accent is but presumably of Irish descent!) uillean pipe, low whistle and fiddle player. He's on the latest album Hill of Thieves and touring with Cara through this summer as well. Worked with Oysterband amongst others in the past.

  • Yes thats the one

Are you a fan of Cara Dillion?

  • Beautiful! Such an amazing singer. I was hoping to catch her in Boston next month, but it's a Celtic Christmas thing with a bunch of other artists, so I'm probably not gonna bother taking 2 days off from work to make the trip. If it was just Cara I definitely would go.

  • I'm performing this for my GCSE obvs. not as well though

    Awsome Cara

  • fabulas,
