well, no one can match the Burton/Taylor version to me, but any excuse to see Marc Singer take off his shirt is a-okay with me **grin** - he's over 60 now, but he is still as yummy as he ever was. :-)
I saw this in my theatre class last night. I had to walk out for a moment because I was coughing, I come back in and see lord von donginslongin here and I'm just like "O.O......did it just get wet in here or is it just me?"
Amazing acting. I only wish I could have seen it live. I just finished reading Taming of The Shrew, and even though it's ages old, the Kate and Petruchio scenes still cracked me up.
as per Wikipedia, Marc Singer is alive and well and "currently teaching children inter-disciplinary tactics at the Heifetz International Music Institute, in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire." maybe you should remove the SUICIDE reference.
Marc Singer's costume designer was channelling Peter Berlin (gay icon of the '70s). Like the Village People, most of it went right over the world's heads at the time...
This is beyond a doubt the most lame and gay version of the SHREW I have ever seen...looks like they putting on a show in someones garage....lol...but alas...after you have seen the BURTON/TAYLOR version ...all the other versions look lame(grin)
well isn't this one sexy version. XD Fredi Olster is lovely, and Baptista, lol! I wish they'd converse a little slower though, although it is Commedia dell'Arte.
LOL this is gold. I actualy have to do this part next week in drama class I am kate and someone I don't realy know is my husband to be. LOL this will help me bunches at least the kiss me kate is not in our version. LOL
Marc Singer is one damn hunk! I would have loved to be the person who played Katherina! I would have loved to be felt up and tossed around by those muscular arms! OH and forced to kiss in such a hard and lustful way would satisfy me for life:)
I loved this production...it's so good to be reminded that this is a play-within-a play, and so is doubly removed from reality---and the caricature of violence is easier to take than a realistic portrayal.
It's also good to see the groundling's Shakespeare given his due.
This version is excellent in every way. The diction, word timing, and character development. I would say this is even better then Elizabeth Taylor's 1967 version.
The actress in this piece is Fredi Ulster. I had the honor to work with her at Dallas Shakespeare in 1983. She is brilliant and beautiful and has the most generous soul. I hope she is still working because she was wonderful.
Wow, am I the only one that thinks the actress playing Kate is similar to Glenn Close? She has that same highbrow humor about her, and oozes the same hilarious condescension. It particularly reminds me of Close in The Lion of Winter, playing Eleanor bickering with Henry.
i'm SO glad this video is up, i'm playing katharina in an upcoming shakespeare festival &we were having trouble coming up with blocking. this definitely gave me some inspiration!
It could be YouTube that cut off the clip due to their relatively recent requirement on max length. Certainly not intentional on my part. I originally had up 30+ minute clip. I recommend buying this DVD, you won't regret that $15.
I agree that Liz Taylor one - Zeffirelli "no less" - is very boring. I'm interested a lot in how each production ends - how they interpret Kate's "conversion." I think she's been in love all along and that's shown in this scene that I posted. I guess Marc Singer is a hunk but I like his athleticism/acrobatics, and also acting, more than the pecs!
@marianne1017 What the hell...so we have some critics of the BURTON/TAYLOR version of the shrew.....what the hell is this version...was that a "sailor hat" on PETRUCHIO..lol..how gay can this get (wheres the cop and indian chief??) ...and hes ripping off his shirt?....is this a new version of the BEASTMASTER??...and you think this is a better version??...oh please..SANGER is talking way to "high" and too fast...might please the gays in the troop but its NOT shakespeare...and KAT talks to low
@SONOFHERO52 I completely disagree. This whole play mostly likely was performed in this style, a style that developed during Shakespeare's time. this is what all comedies looked like. they were bawdy and performed to entertain the masses, nothing more. it was very over the top as demonstrated by the costuming, masks, and, caricature portrayals of each character. this retelling of the shrew is a great example of what commedia del' arte would have looked like.
@SONOFHERO52 actually, watching this clownish sort of performance of SHREW is the only version I like. this is like the only play shakespeare wrote that i can't stand. however, in this sort of style, it is funny and i can actually appreciate the work for what it is.
To the person who thought he died of heart attack: he unfortunately committed suicide. At the end of his tenure at SF ACT, supposedly there were problems with the financials and he left the company and went to LA but apparently things never went well there. Suicide is always an outcome of depression (I believe) so I think he got depressed about the whole change.
What? Marc Singer? After reading this comment, I went to look it up and I believe he's still alive. His latest work has been on V and he has a few other projects in post-production.
I'm totally willing, even happy to pay for it, but I don't have a card to order a copy online, and haven't been able to find a copy anywhere near me. I may have to find someone to order it for me and just pay them back, but I am inpatient when I get this excited and really wish I could just find it online and watch it now.
Well it was 1976, ACT (American Conservatory Theater) in San Francisco, under the direction of William Ball who has since tragically committed suicide so I can't imagine the cast and crew would ever be able to follow it up with another production of another Shakespeare play. I'm afraid it's sui generis.
oh come on ...! What is so awful about paying $15 or $20, some of which actually goes to these fabulous and probably semi-starving artists who enrich our lives? I don't get this everything-is-free-for-me concept.
I don't think it's online anywhere. It's worth the wait to just order the DVD. On the upside, you get to watch it over and over again! My 5 year old niece loves it, honestly she does, Rings and Things!
Does anyone know where I could find the whole thing online? I've exhausted my resources and I'm too impatient to order the DVD online and wait for it to get here.
Best live Shakespeare production EVER! Hands down. The ultimate battle of the sexes. This is by far the best scene in the play. I can't believe Marc Singer didn't end up with a better acting career with this on his resume. He is immensely talented. Spouting Shakespeare is hard enough but to do it while bench pressing a woman takes skill. lol. It didn't hurt that he was hot. Perfect costume for that character. Still amazes me how bawdy the Bard could be with his plays.
My 5-year-old niece wanted to see this DVD because I accidentally introduced her and her 3-year old sister to Cole Porter's "Taming of the Shrew" - DVD of the original movie - anyway, the 5 year old wanted to see this particular scene over and over. We ended up acting it out - since I'm bigger, I was Petrucchio. She liked "Rings and Things!"
taming of the shrew is my favorite play ever... but comedia del arte is my favorite version of taming of the shrew.... in english we are rewriting this into modern terms thn we have 2 present it 2 our class!
You can buy a new/factory sealed copy via Amazon Marketplace for under $12. It's worth it and it looks better on a larger screen. Invite over the friends and neighbors.
Is there any way to see the entire production? Marc Singer is really better than one would have assumed The Beastmaster and the star of V would be. Shame he didn't have a bigger career.
they (specially petruchio) did a great job! this is one of my favourite plays by shakespeare and i don´t think that it is violence he´s using against her..this is just a funny interpretation of the taming(i think)
THANKS for posting this vid!
i was really really happy when i found this one:D THANK YOU!!!
no...it was not meant as brutality. it's meant as slap stick...and based on the audience reactions...i think they understood the comic effect quite well.
It is a misreading of Comedia del Arte to interpret physical play as brutality. I'm not sure whether I really like it. It is amazing what these people can do, physically. However, I find it quite crucial in Shakespeare's text that Petrucchio NEVER gets physically violent against Katharina - whereas in this production, he is actually quite brutal.
