@M44hk Magnifying Glasses were very common one time. Before Internet/ Mobile Phones people always had one to hand to magnify print. I saw my uncle and mother do crosswords/ read the paper with one. Remember people only went to opticians when their situation was dire as they cost pots of money; there was no spec savers/ vision express back then:-)
