@TheXXXDB Ha. Yeah, I don't know how these guys do it. I have a couple of nicer old pieces, including a 62' Les Paul Junior. I will probably NEVER be able to afford even a lower priced 52-56' Goldtop. I did recently find an early 60's Jazz Bass in Candy Apple red that is in decent shape and basically all original. That is like the Holy Grail to bass collectors, and it may give me some leverage to get to my ultimate goal of a golden era Gibson. There's always hope! BTW, I play ALL mine!!!
It's amazing to think that guitar is way older than me (lol). And still looks good. But...imagine the stories it could tell (if it could), about how it may have helped, changed or shaped people's lives. Mmm...(that sounds like an idea for a movie)...(lol)
Count me in the group who seriously resents the presence of 'collectors' in the musical instrument world. I hate everything about the 'collector' mentality. Don't care when they're limiting their activities to Beanie Babys or limited edition Elvis Presley collector plates, but they wind up hording the best instruments and turning them into trophies, all rooted in that lame game collectors play where they try to impress one another with 'rarity' and 'novelty'. It's just dumb.
@LandonInFlorida you make good sense, especially from a players point of view..hoarding,ego,greed, all come into play and we the working musicians who don't have bigbucks lose out..
@LandonInFlorida thank you for saying that i could not have said it better myself......this is NOT about the instrument as they try too portrait its about EGO...and nothing more too see who dick gets wet with a more expensive toy....sad really.....
are those the original finishes ? .. i would think they would be quite faded out- especially the 58 as Tom said it wasn't till 1960 and some late model 59's that they started to get the finish right and that meant not near as much fading or i think it might be called "Fume fading" that 1959 is so deep a red i like the darker red burst as oppossed to the lighter more "fire-engine red" finishes, i once saw a persimmons burst that was a deep deep red than deep orange it was magnificent looking!
People are so jealous, if any of you followed 50's les pauls you would know who Tom Wittrock was. So if you don't know what you're talking about, keep your yaps shut!

Does anyone know much about this Whitrock guy? What does he do besides buy/sell guitars? Is he a real player or just a collector?
tatsandteles 1 week ago
@tatsandteles He is a player and a great one actually. He got a '56 Goldtop wired to humbuckers, worn as hell!

What a shame, these guitars being so shiny and clean. They deserve to be played, not looked at and hoarded.

@WoWintosh Tom plays these guitars often; they are not being hoarded. ;-)-
