This is not a rebel song, the video is unnecessary. The Birmingham 6 were victims of British racism against the Irish, but the whole point is that they weren't active Republicans. You only have to listen to "Streets of Sorrow" to hear that this song is actually a rejection of armed struggle.
@Zoro831 he should re-read his "bible" again. Didnt Christ absolve a murderer on the neighbouring Cross?
And Terrorist? Britain never came to Ireland by invitation? Took land from the Natives? Sold them into Slavery (300,000 sent to Barbados)? Turned Blight to Famine - denying humanitarian aid from the US? Created Apartheid for Catholics and Republicans, so Unionists would reap rewards? Drew false borders to ensure Unionist majority? internment without trial? Who's the Terrorist here?
I'd rather be a "whore of the empire" ,(presumeably a referance to the English), than a "whore of rome". Wallowing in their own self pity, more than happy to continue milking the victim role for all its worth&when they really drop a bollock they can go snivelling off to their priest, knock a few hail marys/our fathers off&get instant forgiveness.
Don't knock the arse out of the Britsh justice system, while the church of rome continues its 2000 years of lies, suppression, deception&paedophillia.
@walshy2866 organised paedophillia= Boy Scouts in England. Lies, Suppression of Human Progression = British Empire. Because Shane sings about the English being Whores of the Empire (which you probably aren't as you need a high-ranking title to hold any power: you're a slave to your Class Masters) doesn't mean he's backing the RC Church: why cant he be attacking as an Irishman & a campaigner for justice? Why religion?Your Masters knowlingly used Scapegoats for B'ham & Guil'rd, & got them...
@walshy2866 cont. ...disgusting! the leader of the England ASU in '74 & '75 & told the Police & S-Branch numerous times that the people in prison for G'dford and Bir'ham were innoccent. They weren't all Irish: one girl was a 19-year old London student who lived in a hippy commune/squat. She lost what? 15 years of her life? You're so in love with British Life then why did Apartheid exist on it's "Isle" until '70s and '80s?
British Justice= Justice for the rich=a farce=Pantomime. Tiocfaidh Ar La
@crossybhoy . Some good points there, some maybe held true 100 years ago, some still hold true.
Opinions make the world go round and freedom of speech in Britain allows it more than most countries in the world.
I have mine , you have yours, at least we don't get our tongues cut out for saying it.
I was enjoying reading it until I saw the most over-used phrase of all time used at the end, shame you spoilt it with that because that really has no effect anymore.
@walshy2866 100 years ago The British were about to conscript Millions of Irishmen into the most pointless of wars; WW1. From an Irish point-of-view selling their National rights that the Brit Government forced them to cede for Belgium!! Belgium?
True, freedom of speech is pretty good in Britain. How can you justify the banning of a book "The Commitee", about State Collusion with Loyalist paramilitaries? Or internment without trial? That can still happen to Muslims, can't it?
Great music! I dont get why Ireland and Ulster fought because of the religion. Beside, The Cranberries and The Pogues made songs about that. A piece of modern art. Lets hope there will be worldpeace soon. Síochána go hÉirinn!
nope, i'm afraid it's never...NEVER been banned by anyone...apart from a timing fuck up on benny eltons' saturday night turd....yup everyone knows that...heard it one radio fucking one this year at three in the afternoon!
well your not really are? lol bit of a shit comeback, bit more believable if you'd said you were shaging your own sister, nobody wouldve have doubted those taig antics
i rememeber the birmingham six jammed in the nick for being irish in the wrong place at the wrong time. love this song. nice video. makes me homesick. then again i'm always homesick.
"If we'd been born where they were born and taught what they were taught, we would believe what they believe."-- A sign inside a church in Northern Ireland, explaining the origin of intolerance and hate
@Bovverboy69 I wanted to know who said that and couldn't find it. One thing I did learn though is that it's not just a church but a sign inside the front door of Holy Cross Primary School, in north Belfast and also a good article about that school in Time magazine "Suffer the Little Children". Thanks for the quote. I really dig it and have held that sentiment for a long time.
"...nor to see more young men slain ... " In spite of the Pogues' reputation as violent and intransigent republicans, this song strike me as a call to sanity and peace. Thanks for posting.
ask the freed men ,found guilty as part of the system and they all agree this tune was a major turning point,No wonder Thatcher banned it,The truth will allways out
@ZapLJ ummm no, I think I'll trust official documents relationg to what percent of the world population identifies as christian, and it's nowhere near 9/10ths. It's more like 3/10ths. And I did search that name, found no channels or videos.
@KriyaArts The truth about the song is that it's about Michael Collins, the Irish revolutionary who fought British occupation in Ireland, went to London and signed the Treaty which partitioned Ireland and lead to the civil war, 1922-23. " The " last six years.." refer to 1916 to 1922. Collins felt there had been enough killing, too many " young men slain". It is not about the troubles in the North of Ireland. Shane's half of the track is self explanatory.
@ZapLJ They were also on the ground in Iraq when the US invaded Iraq. It was a huge national scandal in Canada, that the Canadian government tried to deny and cover up. Google "Canada's secret war in Iraq" and read about it.
Why do we need to bring "god" into it its down to religion that causes the bloodshed. Personaly i've never spoken to "god" or jesus and i doubt anyone here has so how can you say "he" thinks this or that! The Pogues are a band, comment on that and their music not wheather or not "god" agrees with violence.
true that God dont approve violence but it still happens non the less, but God does approve good so whoever is in the right is the one he would approve.
Thank you, everyone, for the... uhm... rousing debate stirred up by the song and video! At least no-one is lukewarm... Everyone has a right to their opinion, but it would be best to advise folks that I will remove comments and block users for profanity, personal attacks, hate speech or threats. In the meantime - rock on!!
I don't care what your opinion on The Troubles is, this is just a great fucking song regardless of the lyrics. One of the best Irish rebel songs ever recorded.

The British didn't conscript any Irishmen in WWI. That's why there was enough of them to fight in the Easter Rising.

Oh farewell you streets of sorrow
And farewell you streets of pain
I'll not return to feel more sorrow
Nor to see more young men slain
Through the last six years I've lived through terror
And in the darkened streets the pain
Oh how I long to find some solace
In my mind I curse the strain

Tell that to the imperial powers whether it's modern day America, or Colonial Britian. Better yet, try the ancient Romans and Greeks.
I want peace as well...but it can't happen when people would rather kill each other than help the poor.
