@eljay345 You ma be confusing "popular" with "better". Yes, lots of little girls clung to Journey records when Steve Perry entered the equation. And although on the first few albums with him, he showed great vocal ability, the fact remains the music - like everything else choreographed for the general US public - was watered down for the short attention spans, and limited taste.
Music should be created from the soul, not designed to suit the listener.
Of course Journey with Steve Perry was awesome, and they even rock with Arnel...but to me I love this era the most. They were so heavy! First album is sooooo good!
I rarely explore Journey pre-SP as their melodic rock is the signature of their music. But this performance is quite astonishing, the song is enjoyable, the guitar solos is so fresh like Neal never did before...
@budsaplenty Went to same show, Somehow got fifth row center seats from Spectrum. Remember Spectrum off Big Bend. Unforgettable show. Angel was great too. When they played Tower it blew me away. Many people don't know Journey was put together with guys from Santana. This, to me is the real Journey.
I saw Journey at the Ambasstor Theatre in St.Louis the last show there.. Angel with PUNKY opened the show... I will never forget the Spaceman walking around promoting their new album!!! A much better band before the Perry era,,,
I was oh so fortunate to have seen Journey 2 times before Steve Perry joined the group. That's when Journey was a true rock and roll band. Concord Pavilion Aug 7, 1976, price $7.50. Foothill College, Los Altos Hills, Jan 15, 1977, $5.50. Amazing show!
DAMN RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I saw them in New York at the same time, pre-arena rock clowns era and they were amazing--Dunbar in particular.
The real Journey only lasted 3 records because CBS execs are stoopid and wanted to make cashish. However they did record more material in the studio around the time of their first album. Look for the Charge of The Light Brigade bootleg (it is also a song), there is some amazing material there and other versions of songs that ended up on the first record. And with Prairie Prince still on drums I believe.
shroomangel i cannot believe you foundfootage of the REAL Journey. I will do anything for a copy of the entire concert! Incredible music, and Neil's fro and fu manchu!
Yes Please share the rest of the show. I've been wanting to see a Journey show from this era jazz rock 1975-1977 is only great and the longggg guitar solos very cool share please more.
Ahh...the old 'quantity over quality' argument...some of the best bands in the world didn't sell a lot of records but wrote some incredible songs that actually TOUCHED people. I'lll go along with everyone else that says they want a copy of this show.
@pfeltovich If they were so much better before Steve Perry joined then why were they not getting radio play before he joined? Their then record label was going to dump them because they couldn't get radio play.Herbie Herbet their then manager insisted Steve Perry become their new lead singer and the rest as they say is history!!!

They would've been known as S.R.S.... Santana Rhythm Section
fightback38 6 months ago
If they had kept this formation.. they would have had success but it would be a "Mothers Finest" or "Saxon" type.. limited in scope and sales
fightback38 6 months ago
They would have remained a jam band had it not been for Perry...very good, but they would have been relegated to obscurity a few years later....

Were it not for the Fleischman/Perry revamp of Journey,
we wouldn't even be talking about "the early days".
These guys were on their way to commercial oblivion.

The Best Journey line up, doing George Harrison proud. Real vocals, Real drumming. Should have stuck with this roster IMO

...And no hits.
You never would have heard of Journey were it not for Fleischman/Perry.
They needed that extra ingredient.

or the Perry-era Rollie who sang lead or co-lead on several Journey hits?

@MyhoganyRush Right, if they just wanted to play shows to a West Coast audience.
If they wanted to sell records and play the biggest venues in the world, umm, they needed something extra.
