While, according to Wikipedia and QI, the turk was a very elaborate hoax, controlled by a hidden human player, (Something i choose to believe) i'm curious as to how the professed voicebox mentioned in the article worked. appearantly, a voicebox was installed so that the turk would say "echet" when it placed the opponent in check....

It couldn't be restored. The original Turk burnt down in 1854. Plus it was revealed that it was a hoax, and in fact a master chess player inside making moves for the machine. Also, if the opponent cheated, The Turk would shake his head and move the other piece back to where it was, he didn't knock all the pieces down.

It's not fictitious. There really was a robot that played chess but it was destroyed in a house fire many many decades ago. Look up The Turk: Chess Automaton.
