  • 0 people watched this video without armor ;)

  • @Laharal55

Now, someone's disliked. You jinxed it.

Ah, well. Nevermind. I guess one guy bought shitty armour and died in battle.

  • Mike Loades is a dangerous man...

  • The mail he tested the lance on looked very light. Had it been of denser weave and heavier construction it would have fared better

  • whoa this man is amazing, he goes from infantry sword-fighting to jousting (wich is HARD) to shooting with the bow so fluently! and he just talks casualy while he does it, explaining all theese things! huzzah for Mike Loades! :P

  • I love this show but I hate how they keep showing plate armoured knights just smacking clumsily away at each other.

  • Ouch! At 2:48 you can see the guys mace bend over the other poor chap's head!

  • I always wondered how exactly would a cavalry unit of knights actually perform on a medieval battle?

I mean, lances are basically one shot weapons, when you hit and kill one person with the lance, it shatters or is simply tucked into the opponent and you cannot retrieve it when you're charging with a horse.

and I suppose they didn't carry extra lances on their horses, so did they just ride to their squares who carried extra lances or did they just fight with swords for the rest of the battle

  • @steelpanther88 Well, swords do work fairly well in a cavalry charge as well, and were used in the same way that lances were used (point facing towards the enemy, use the momentum to stick him). Though they would also slash with them as well.

But remember, cavalry was used either to mop up retreating enemies, or in a hammer and anvil style. The hammer crashes down on the iron (enemy), and always comes back up, only to crash down again.

  • @Kisk79 which is better chain mail or scale mail

  • @kaindrg You can't really say one is better than the other. They're both good sets of armour, considering how long both of them were used. However they each have their different strengths and weaknesses. Scale for example did not consume much time to make either. Chain on the other hand could take a fairly long time, seeing as how each individual link was riveted.

  • @Kisk79 what about Lamellar armour made with iron or steel links like seen in asia ?

  • @kaindrg There is no such thing as scale mail.

  • @NoisemakerArrow oh right is called Scale armor properly

  • @kaindrg Mail is better than Scale, both offer very good defense, but Scales tend to tear-off more often than Rings tend to break when receiving a powerful blow, and you don´t want an armor that peels-off, Scale armor is still a good armor, but comparatively, Ring Mail is better

  • @Kisk79 indeed, plus knights tended to favour the flail as a backup weapon compared to the sword when doing a second strike since it was a far more effective weapon on the move like that

  • @steelpanther88

Generally they would have spare lances waiting at the edge of the field. Though, fighting with a one-handed sword from horseback is still possible. Especially when your charge broke through the nemy line and you can now roll them up from the flank or behind.

  • @steelpanther88 They were virtually a one shot weapon, since horses only have so much stamina, and a charge is very wearing on horse. It was why horse archers could defeat knights - they would force them into a single charge, which would exhaust them, and then pick them off when they were tired. If they connected, they'd destroy whatever they hit -- there is a record of a knightly charge against the mongols, which did connect, and, allegedly, the mongols' horses were flipped over by the impact!

  • Hmm, concussive force against maille certainly works, but it's not only lances and arrows that can penetrate maille for direct bodily trauma.

Good half-sworded thrusts from swords, rondels, and spears are known to pop the rings of the armor as well.

    Thanks for posting these videos!

  • it's odd how he discounts the plate found in Scandinavia ...

  • Thanks for all your posts kisk79, loved em all & have watched them many times over; would love to meet Mike one day & maybe even be a student...how cool would that be?!

*War then as it is now, still sux & you still carry/wear a ton of gear!

  • I appreciate these videos very much! Please keep uploading them!

Are there more of this series?

( I have already watched The Sword, The Shield, The lance and The Longbow )

  • @SubaUba This is the last of the Weapons that Made Britain series. I wish there were more, but I am planning to get some other documentaries up eventually.

  • @Kisk79

    Oh thank you, thank you!

Im obsessed in medieval era right now, gotta get more :D

  • @SubaUba No problem. Also, you should search for the user "soylicantropo". He's got some really cool scale models of Medieval and Roman era siege weapons.

  • @Kisk79 Thank you very much, it's a joy to watch these videos.

  • @000majorwinters000 You're welcome, glad you like them. Do you have any series recommendations for future videos?

  • @Kisk79 I'd definitely like to keep a lookout for more like these, but they seem pretty rare to me. I'm looking for more series' along the same lines as this one myself.
