That is not Bower's theme from Super Mario Bros. That's from the Super Mario All Stars version which came after Super Mario Bros. 3. The Super Mario All Stars version is actually the remix of 3.

Basically, the plot first starts (Opening level) with the standard "Save Princess from Bowser" concept, but then, the game's new main villain, a guy named Smithy, appears, kicks Bowser out of his own castle, and sets out to take over the world. Mario gradually gains allies like Bowser (Trying to get his castle back), the Princess, and a couple new characters to ultimately defeat Smithy and save everyone.
