@chuckfaststrat Keep at it, Chuck - even if it's only once a week. I can tell you from painful experience that when you get older your fingers will be less and less enthusiastic about playing fast stuff. I played electric lead in bands back in the 70s and 80s, but lately I can't do half the stuff I used to. I'm 54, and learning about arthritis from the inside. Mostly I just play acoustic stuff these days, just can't pick fast any more. -- Erle
@mightyerle Sorry to learn of the arthritis, Erle. But I am glad to know you are still playing music. I still have the speed & attack, but my timing is a bit off. It happens...and I was never one to practice much once I got past the age of 19. Anyway, best of success to you.
Wow, great stuff. I'm new to your channel and read your description. Wondered. Since you take long breaks from playing, do you find yourself having to work to regain technique?
@chuckfaststrat Clip #3 didn't do so much for me, I just think this clip has more style in it for ya than say 1-3 :) 1-3 seems like just regular old none inspired thoughtless shredding(no insult intended), while 4-6 seems to have you actually get INTO IT emotionally and inspirationally. It's just like your facial expression changes and you BECOME the guitar, rather than simply playing it. It's hard to explain, but you can hear it in the notes as you play them :)
@Ibik I really don't know...I just burned out. My last performing job was on cruise ships, and I think I just got so bored/tired of playing the same recycled stuff, that I just stopped caring. Usually, after some time passes, I want to play again. But...it just hasn't happened, really. Maybe I'm just too caught up in trying to find a decent career to think about music. Maybe, once I'm more settled, I can approach guitar again with a fresh mind and creative energy.
You style, feel, and grasp of how to move off the progressions is awesome! I definitely hope to be able to do some of the techniques I've seen in your videos within a couple of months.
I'm sure you get this a lot, but is there any specific reason you use a thumb pick? I always just dismissed them as silly, but watching you use it is making me reconsider very fast! Is it just habit, or do you actually find advantages with it?
@nickbmyers217 there are advantages and disadvantages. Thumbpicks allow the right hand fingers to be free. The thumb itself builds independence and strength (don't need to hold the pick at all), and the attack is always consistant. (I can also do a bit of a poor man's Stanley Jordan with it). But...you do give up a few things. Still, for what I wanted to do, thumbpicks give more than they take away.
So, this is all your skill !! huh ! Oh, just kidding, nevermind !!
This is the first time i've ever seen a style like this. It's so fancy to play with that pick . Hehe, really hard to describe your skill. ........... It's just so great and skillfull. Vote for video.
@RetroBasement Not anymore. The drums and bass line were just some things I programmed into a friends' Boss Jamstation. I don't even think they make Jamstations anymore.
@RetroBasement Well...kinda yes and no. I hate programming and would have much prefered real players. But, for what it was, it was simple to punch in some basic backing tracks. It wasn't very user friendly (IMHO) when it came to trying to make it do some intutitive, dynamic things, but I guess that comes with being a machine. I don't even know where you could get a Jamstation anymore....

@benighted2 Not really. It is pretty much like riding a bike. Takes about a week for the timing and attack to come back, give or take a few days.
