Regarding all the comments that take the AVGN claims for granted: the Jaguar CD has a bog-standard Philips laser pickup/drive mechanism (CDM12.1) that can easily replaced if broken, and most "broken" Jaguar CDs are either not inserted correctly into the console (including the one in the AVGN video - it clearly wiggles on top of the console, but should sit firmly) or have the axle pushed into the drive itself because someone pressed the CD down once too often.
@alec1382 You still take him for granted. The red screen means there's a a bad connection between the "cartridge" (in this case, the CD unit) and the console. This - as in all retro consoles - can be fixed by repeatedly inserting it. I have never have a CD unit fail completely on me (and I had four of them and still have three in storage). So how comes that Mr. Rolfe somehow purchased two faulty ones for over US$ 200 when Best Electronics, CA, sells them for 175 new and 135 reconditioned?
@thorstenguenther Richard soldered the CD unit directly to the Jaguar. I'm still not understanding how there could have been a connection issue in that situation.
Managed to buy one today at a bootsale, just the unit and power supply, £12, i have 2 boxed consoles, with most vintage gaming it comes along, you just have to keep your eyes open, ive picked up many items over the years for my collection , it`s harder now but i still pick up bits, keep your eyes peeled, i only buy off ebay when the price is right, no need to go mad, £100 for 1 game madness!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@alec1382 Nope, the Jaguar does not have regional lockouts in either hardware or software. Only very bad programming can stop a Jaguar game from running fine in both 50Hz (PAL, SECAM) and 60Hz (NTSC) screen refresh rates (and until today, only one title ever had this problem: Dragon's Lair won't run properly on PAL and SECAM Jaguars).
I had a Jaguar CD. Strange, back around 1998 you couldn't give these things away. No one wanted one. They were OK, but the only reason to have one was to play Dragon's Lair( which was a perfect port) and watch the colorful display when you played a music CD. Other than that it was a door stopper. Really.
The Jaguar had total potential, but Atari's tarnished reputation and some of those really bad unfinished looking early Jaguar titles pretty much sealed its fate as 'avoid this one'.
he didn't 'do' this, he does reviews. the 2 jaguar cd consoles he had did not work. this one might, so if he sends it to AVGN, maybe he can do reviews.
he doesn't. it was a suggestion, you dope. let it go. and he can't "go out and buy one" because these are RARE. do you understand the concept of donating a rare item to someone for review? are you really this stupid?
Errr, sorry but that makes no sense at all. How the hell can it be a great console if it has terrible games? That's like someone saying that they have a great car which drives like s*** and breaks down constantly.
I wish people wouldn't act like the AVGN is a reliable source of video game information. It's like if everything you knew about Russia was from Yakov Smirnoff jokes.
If you look up information about it however you find that it has a high rate of failure. All in all it was poorly constructed and was a part of what ruined the company.
Mine still works after 14 years. Never even been cleaned and spent a couple years in a plastic bag buried in my closet. Pulled it out, bought an aftermarket power supply, still had Battlemorph in it,and it worked like a charm on the first try. Don't believe everything you read.
Dude send it to the AVGN (Angry Video Game Nerd) he would probably spend close to 500$ for a working one... anyway if you do send it to him tha he will review the games :)
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
FUCK OFF! Just because the AVGNs doesn't work doesn't mean that someone SHOULD have to send them their consoles. Fuck the AVGN, he can go buy his fucking own!
I'm a big fan of the AVGN, but don't take his reviews seriously at all. A lot of what he says is purely for entertainment and therefore exaggerated and not entirely factual.
Why am I saying this? Because I've just seen one too many comments on youtube showing a blatant misguidance from hanging on every word James Rolf's (admittedly great) fictional character says!
I have this too. I had to buy 3 of them off ebay before I found one that worked right. The only problem with this unit is that the motor that spins the disc in the cd drive goes out. There are replacement drives you can get, but you have to get the right model. I had no luck finding one so I opted to return the product and buy from someone else. These systems rarely appear on ebay and can be worth up to $300.
I bought the CD add-on when I was 13, about a year after becoming bored with the Jag by itself. I think it worked about 5 times (just enough to get me through an entire game of Myst). I'm hoping that in ten years, my decision to keep it, along with all original packaging and manuals, will pay off!! It hasn't yet...
Well, it might not be a serious issue. I'm sure that someone could fix it. Even so, someone somewhere might be willing to pay good cash for it just because it has everything with it. If it's a plain collector, they might not even want to use it anyway; just put it on a shelf behind glass.
Maybe. I can only tell you that I'm a collector myself, and hardly ever use any of my vintage systems. But even so I'd never consider buying something that does not work, simply because it becomes useless to me. I mean, imagine filling a museum with just broken stuff.
That's very true. Well, there's still the possibility of someone fixing it up. I mean, there could just be something put together poorly inside, since it worked a few times when it was new and then died... I'm sure someone could figure it out.
I think he meant he only used it 5 times and had awkward wording, there is no way a remotely reasonably cared for CD add on would only work 5 times and not be returned to a store as defective.
why the cd add ons don't companies now add ons ruine systems look at sega genesis/ segacd/32X/CDX two of those systems were cd based systems irroniclly all of them suck except the genesis now lets look at the JAGUAR the system itself sux and adding something for it makes it worse.
I give Sega crap for all the crap they dumped on the gaming public in the early-mid 90s, Atari makes Sega looking like a freking gospel singing group when you compare them to Atari. I mean at least the Sega CD/32X could play games well (not that any were made for them :D )
I don't really understand what you're trying to say here.. The Cd/32X could play games but there were non made for them... right.
I don't know about that, but the Jaguar+CD played games very well and there were made games for it. Not that many and only a few good ones, but still.
Oh look! A TOILET! Yeah, I remember spending $250 on one of those things back in 1995. And what games came out for Jag CD other than the ones packed with it. Beyond that, the JagCD was little more than a toilet. Although I will admit that VLM was awesome at the time. (Before you email me, google "VLM" or "Virtual Light Machine")
Nope. 32x added extra processing power or was basicly a new system in a box on top of the megadrive/genesis. The Jag-Cd is what it says it is. A cd add on. Nothing more, nothing less. But it had built in OS and the VLM Which was really cool.. Even Xbox360 has it these days. M$ Steals every idea!
The construction is, in my opinion, rather shoddy. When I play mine, I have to put a book or something on the unit so there's enough pressure on the little button inside the system. Still, I'm glad to e=own one, especially as they're now so hard to find.
nice. i got to play the jaguar in the museum, its a shame it never came in britain or japan cuase alot of people knowed and liked atari and it probably would of caught on
The reason why the Jaguar crashed here in the states was because most of the games available for it were terrible. There simply weren't that many games on the Jag that could truly distinguish themselves from what was on Nintendo and Sega.
The same situation would exist in international markets as well, so it would likely have failed overseas, especially in Japan.
good points there maybe if it had better games that could take advantage of its '64 bits of mega power' than it probably would of got released to britain (maybe not japan loads of consoles there) atari wud of still been in the market
p.s. the jaguar came 5th out of ten of the most biggest video game flops =(
Actually, it was kind of the other way around. A rather complicated "reverse merger" (ask an accountant, but the procedure was done to make both Atari and JTS happy - Atari got to claim tax losses, JTS got to be publicly traded without needing to issue an IPO.)
Yeah i remember it was kinda done to keep the money in the family. Being true or not it was probably the best way for both companies to quit their business without too much losses.

Actually, Atari did try its luck with the Jaguar - both in Japan and in the UK - with expected results: abysmal.
Total worldwide sales for Jaguar was less than 500,000 when Atari decided to get into the hard drive business and kill the Jaguar in 1996.
fafaflunkie 4 years ago
The JAg had a more or less world wide release. I don't know why people think it was only sold in the US?
