my favorite part is right as michael is coming out of the duet with chambers, chambers actually lifts off his drum throne to punish the two cymbals on the right @ 3:24
I think that bass solo is great and crucially placed - It provides a massive amount of contrast to the business of the other sections and just because it was simple doesn't mean you can't focus on how rediclously good his timing and sound were!
@benzies123 would you describe what you think is great about the bass solo plz? i'm still trying to understand its value - the rhythm seems wierd and he over does some of the notes imo
I remember seeing this slap solo a few times and thinking it wasn't that great. But now when listening to it again I really like the way he plays through the changes of the song in the beginning. I'm also noticing the way he's playing off Stern's backup. Some of the later noodling is quite okay if you think about when this was recorded. I'm impressed with how great his time is.
Why comparing Genus and Wooten? Both are great players.I don't think Genus bass is an issue, he choose it for a reason... the same as Vic. Im just giving my opinion and not trying to be mean.
I love the bass player's playing, but i don't think he is a slapper though. he is more of a finger player and he is a killer upright player as well. the funney thing about this bass player on here is that him and victor wooten where raised together. but they both have there own approach.
to noinwe and all the others who said the solo was weak: don't listen to the slaps, listen to what was happening in between
James Genus is one of the most incredible bass players to ever walk the planet. His mastery of the instrument is unreal. I've seen him perform this year with dave weckl, one of the most enterntaining performances i've seen. Think before you look down on unorthodox creativity
very ignorant thought process....what does time frame have to do with veracity of a solo? this kind of thinking makes for mindless adherence to trends and fads....I guess Bird's solos don't hold up because they were palyed so long ago.

Because slap was very much in 20 years ago. That's where the time frame comes in genius. A 4 minute slap solo doesn't work now days unless you're Victor Wooten or you're really doing something with it melodically. Musically not too much was going on for the duration. Hey I love Genus but it was weak and he started scuffing up a bit. So what ignorant thought process are you talking about. Oh! You're one of those deeps guys.
I'm not really sure why, but I love Randy's repeated riff at 1:44, it's really cool. Maybe it's because it's not really his style persay, but who cares, it's awesome!
3:06 to 3:28 is so totally pure! Lawd! Pure fury and intensity on the highest level....even Dennis, who is not one to emote on the bandstand, knows it and hops out of his chair on the last cymbal crash!
Par contre ils vont plus lentement d'habitude et la ça se voit que Michael tirer derrière (même à sa tête ça se voit quand il joue le thème) au maximum pour essayer de ralentir !

that bass playing is fucking hot

genus is one of the best...
he is fighting the mighty fodera 5 string wide neck 35` scale...i think...
so don`t be mean...
wooten is playing the easiest 4 string bass made especially for slap...
i love genus on bass...he grooves harder than wooten and is at least as intelligent as wooten is. (on the bass)
best wishes to all

One thing is that the bass solo was way too long. Tone was great though. Just a very weak solo.

Bass solo was extra weak. I'm surprised because I usually love this cat. Would had been good twenty years ago.

Great James Genus, He takes the leadership with person like M. and R bercker, M.Stern, D.chambers.
I don't recognize the key's player but he rules too.
Great fusion moment.

The key's player is George Whitty, and yes, he rules GNI !

oh it's James Genus ?
I couldn't reconize him.
I have seen him at a Diane Reeves show.
