  • Not only is her performance SO memorable, but this is one of the very, very clearest recordings that I've ever heard from that era!

Thank you so much for uploading this for all of the many appreciative listeners (Utubers??) such a myself...

  • Doug

I can pay no higher compliment than to say that this performance

has me in tears of joy..

    Regards-John

  • @65attila

John: So glad, grateful to resurrect the sounds of this fine, well nigh forgotten singer. Many thanks! Doug --

  • hi cruzon -only jokin- interesting that lizi is not scotish sounds like she is - beautifull and lovely

  • russians sing this better!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @thefrogmaster2

    Oh? How so? Please explain...

    Full details most welcome!

  • Delightful. Thank you very much. I think this is the best version i have heard.

    She deserves a Wiki site!

She seems to have a Scottish accent. Was she American or was she making it realistic?!

  • Hi Gambo: Elizabeth Wheeler was very much from the USA; accent likely adjusted for this particular song. Many thanks! Cheers, etc. Doug --

  • She's a lovely singer, both voice and style. A real discovery for me. Thanks, Doug. I wonder if she recorded anything by Lehar or Kalman?

  • I'll have to check, maybe Kalman in ensemble, but Lehar, yes... the Vilia song from Merry Widow (which I'll try to post soon). THANKS!

  • Quite a beautiful singer is this Elizabeth Wheeler. A great rendition of the touching song. Helen Traubel sang it beautifully, as well as Paul Robeson. Thank you, Doug, for sharing this.

  • Hi Nate: It's good to get her name out there. Thanks very much! Doug --

  • I doubt that I have ever heard this song more meltingly sung.

  • Sweet. Her second stanza seems to be different then yours!!

  • Second stanza duly corrected. While perhaps not stellar like the famed Red Seal artists (Melba, Tetrazzini, Galli-Curci, et al), Wheeler is a very nice singer, appearing often on Victor's budget Black Label in solos, duets and ensembles, mostly uncredited in the latter. Thanks again!

  • Perhaps not 'stellar' as you note. But goodness me how she would shine today.

  • Elizabeth Wheeler really is in the "obscure and forgotten" category. A shame, because her communication is so real! Again, many thanks!
