The problem with arguing about Kirk shouldn't have been killed is that he simply was. And failing that, the character, and actor, are both human. They've gotta take Kirk out while he was still Kirk. William Shatner is a great actor, but Kirk had to die at the proper time (before an old codger kicking a** becomes comical instead of dramatic,) and speaking in franchise terms, that was in 1994. Spock still works because of the "wise old man" character he's become from his "wise" character he was.
And mark my words, if Shatner doesn't appear in this upcoming movie, they will regret that decision too. I mean c'mon. As great an actor as Pine might be in this movie and even if he does win an Emmy for his performance, Shatner is still Kirk and without him, there wouldn't have been any of the movies or TV shows to begin with. Seriously as good as Jeffrey Hunter was as Captain Pike, I seriously doubt he would've lead the show into the huge success it became.
I agree. I don't like the idea of them killing off Kirk either and their reasons for killing him off were just way too convenient. The ironic thing is with the new Star Trek movie coming out in six months, a lot of people now regret the decision of killing him off.

Captain Kirk should not have died twice in 1 film. Both of the deaths were not memorable and not the way for the best Star Trek captain to die.

This idea is so full of awesome that it is bursting at the seams.
