It's true that NM was once part of Mexico. So to say "us" and "them" is misleading. We are the same people, divided by a national border and, more increasingly, a language difference. People of hispanic heritage in NM have more in common ancestrally with people who live in Mexico than most people here in the US. I am proud of my ancestral heritage but equally as proud of the country that I grew up in. But that country could just as easily have been Mexico.
