Awesome reminds me of hammering down English Country Lanes in My Audi.Absolutely Resplendent amidst the absolute art of resplendicity.S-P-L-E-N-D-I-D!!!!!!!!!
English? Welsh, actually. But never mind. Slightly overproduced, this is sublime nonetheless. "How could your nothings be so sweet" indeed. And the backing vocalist (who sounds even more sugary sweet than Green himself) is actually called BJ Nelson!
Every nanosecond has to be filled with some burp or fart. He was capable of FAR better than this. Nice song somewhere buried beneath the crap. Green, you fucked up seriously from here on when you thought you were American not English. You did English much better.
This song is absolutely amazing - one of my favourite Scritti tunes. However, I think the video director could have made the video slightly more dynamic! When I hear this song, I really want to dance. But this video... god, it's so dull.
80's music was so great.. the whole new wave new romantic thing it was so cool, this is a fun song it reminds me of avanue a in the east village it was da bomb at that time. king tut's wa wa hut...those were the days.
Agreed but they used 'real' musicians too, being a bass player, I was jazzed to find out that Marcus Miller and Will Lee both contributed to Cupid And Psyche '85
Fred Maher (drums & drum programming) and David Gamson (keyboards) put down some incredible grooves with Green's voice and lyrics. The studio production was flawless and I can just groove (for lack of a better word) on all their songs. Great great stuff.
Before NERD, Timbaland, and all them other Hip-Hop/R&B producers, Green and his NY team were doing it first. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if Jam and Lewis were digging this up in Minneapolis. I'm pretty sure Janet Jackson's "Control" was inspired by the Scritti sound.
It's interesting that you would equate this to TL&JJ. Sonically, yeah it's obviously alike, but not many pick up on the compositional approach similarities. They both have strong music comp backgrounds (i.e. they know the names of the chords they're play, they know what melodies "fit" over those chords and why, etc.). If you listen to Shannon's "Let the Music Play" and Herbie Hancock's "Rockit", you'll hear similar compositionally cool ideas, as this. SP and Nik Kershaw are greatly underrated.
Yep, you got that right. I have this shit on vinyl. It sounds better than anything on the radio right now...The Word Girl, Absolute. This is a great blast from the past...I stand firm that the 80's was the best decade in music EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!
I agree with you and bourgeois..soo many people seem to have forgot that Scritti were pioneers of sorts..Nik Kershaw as well I believe it was on the track "Know How" he had some very very familiar chords that u can probably would hear in late 90's and early 00's hip hop
NERD is a rock band. you meant, the Neptunes. the man you are talking about is David Frank from the group The System. He has worked with many artist, Chaka Khan, Scritti Politti, Phil Collins and others. DAVID FRANK was "the Neptunes" of the 1980s...
wow. it's odd how ahead of their time the production is. all that glitchy shit going on with the samples and shit -- it took 20 years for house and techno to bring that shit back.
This was the first song I heard by Scritti Politti one Sunday on a New York radio station that was playing international music songs.I'm so glad I listened that day because I ran out and bought the record later on that year and have been a fan since. The most different song I've ever heard and the best.Unique.
She's B.J.Nelson, a celebrated 80's session vocalist who sang backup on Scritti's Cupid & Psyche album as well as on a duet of sorts ("A Little Knowledge")with Green. Their voices always blended together to make such a cool, silky coo, I think that's why they put her in the video as well. It trips me out how they don't react much!
thats not BJ Nelson. Its just a model that was picked for the video. Green was probably dating her during this era. The real BJ Nelson has a myspace page.
I forgot about this video, the girl on the couch is real cute. This song was a nice song that was the follow up single to "Perfect Way", nice 80's music(1985).
2 questions...was this video directed by peter care (looks like his style) and was this the first time we see fred maher on drums as a memeber of scritti politti?
Yes, it was Peter Care and yes, this is the first appearance by Fred Maher in a Scritti video. He is credited as 'drum programmes' on the previous singles Wood Beez and Absolute but wasn't til this song that Green, Maher and David Gamson presented themselves as a 'group' .
Cupid & Psyche 85' along with Level 42's World Machine were two of the coolest and overlooked (in Los Angeles, anyways)albums from the mid 80s. The music still grooves. Green was such a laid back cat. In an era of Duran Duran, Culture Club and other teased up hair bands, Scritti Politti were just plain Hip & Slick. Whoever dug up this video - mad thanks, it's a jam!
couldnt agree with you more. both bands were so underrated. when i ask the kids today about either band they look at you like you are crazy. they just dont understand great music anymore.
Amen! I know every word to Cupid & Psyche and World Machine by heart. The song "Leaving Me Now" can still tear me up. I'm afraid I did like Duran Duran, but also relatively obscure bands like It Bites and Underworld as well. Green's lyrics ("A Little Knowledge" anyone?) were amazing.
Ha Ha... I only seen this once on cable back in the 80's.
I thought the camera movement was so ground breakingly cool back then. Then of course stuff like Grace Jones Slave to the Rhytm came out. Still good to see it again. Thanks for post.
There wasn't a band on the planet as as technically astute as they were, and there isn't currently a band that could match the sheer pop/soul gloss note for note. The things that they did with melodies and chord changes are absolutely amazing. The new album is killer as well. Thanks for posting!
i have the original single with the piece of chocolate on the sleeve! i never saw this video, although it's a little static. this should have been a massive hit.
The video belies the technical complexity of the song.

I have both "Cupid and Psyche '85" and "Provision" CDs.
Miss that decade.
Nowadays I hardly even listen to the radio stations anymore. They play songs that are WAY overrated.
