I always preferred him to MacNeill for Christy just because that's the way I would choose if I were in a position like that. I'm a teacher myself, which is why I'm a fan of the show.
I was trying to remember where I'd seen this character before, since I think I should always remember the actors who played in one of my favorite shows of all times, one about a TEACHER, after all (which I am, so that's why). He played the boyfriend in "For Keeps?" with Molly Ringwald. That was in his younger days, but he got old fast because I almost didn't recognize him when I saw a glimpse of "For Keeps" on TV.
I think the reason so many people don't like David is because in the book he's not half as good as he is in the series, so that colors most fans' perceptions of him.
I think she loved them both, David was safe and gental with the spirt of God on his side everything a woman could or should want. Neil was kind, mysterious, made her blood boil, and was unsaved. David never chalenged her or pushed her limits, Neil did. Every one of us has a soft and a wild side its just a matter of which one she should pick. I would have picked Neil only because I like men who are passionate and intense. I am married to a guy who is a little of both a good balance in my eyes.
I love this! Christy and David have so many scenes that were so romantic and every episode their love seemed to get stronger and to me the difference between Chrisy and David and Christy and Neil was that David and her had a foundation for their relationship. Like at first she wouldn't let him kiss her but then she wanted him to! As the show went on they got closer and closer and Neil simply was a mystery. If she would go to Neil she would have discovered him and wouldn't be interested.
Thanks for including the proposal scene (out by the pond, with the emerald ring) in this one. :) It could have been a bit longer, though, with more scenes in it. While there's not that many David-and-Christy fans compared to Neil-and-Christy, David (unlike Neil) is eligible for marriage, closer to Christy's age; plus he declares his feelings for her earlier on. The fact that he risks his life to try and save Christy from the kidnapper proves he really does love her.
I think David is a great, complex character, too. Neil's transformation (particularly in the book) illustrates Catherine Marshall's main theme of the love of Christ changing people for the better. That's one of the main reasons that I love the Neil/Christy 'ship. She's another catalyst pointing to God in his life.
The scene at 3:15 is a dream *of sorts,* but it takes place at the actual wedding of another series character. Christy imagines her and David in the place of the couple getting married (with the emerald engagement ring David originally gave her); then it shifts back to reality with Doctor MacNeill asking if the place beside her (Christy) is taken. The movie portrays the character of David somewhat more positively than the book, I think -- a more viable competitor for Christy's affections.
You're welcome! (In real life the woman that Christy is based on married the man that David is based on - I would choose Neil but David is very appealing!)
