I'll bet Marc Summers would be a good host for a new OCD Awareness program, since A&E does have that one Hoarders show about ones who hoard pets, or have too much of a collection of many different things. I'm glad Marc Summers still has a career after Double Dare. Since he nowadays hosts Unwrapped on Food Network. And I love how they tour factories on great foods we love to eat and how they are made. I still feel sorry that Double Dare turned out to be a nightmare for Marc, instead of fun.
he had a cleaness ocd? and he hosted double dare and what would you do they were both messy, I have the disorder doing things over and over running though stuff in my head that should not matter memorys from the past and I try to hit all them quickly without letting my mind wander, so I have good recall of it, problably why I have such a good memory or give that impression, that and trying to do things better the second time if I cant decide the first time. This disorder is really time consuming
i do something with my light a lot i switch it off and on and keep doing this until it feels right didn't think i had ocd but now i do because all my possesions HAVE to be in order and i freak if they are out of order i am also very obsessive over my belongings when i was 5 i used to sleep with my cd's and books to "keep them safe" i told myself
Mark Summers is awesome. Thanx for posting this. My form of OCD is not like this at all though. I suffer more the "magical thinking" type of OCD. I love Mark Summers so it is inpirering to see he has this too and found ways to manage it. ^__^
my ocd isn't as bad as some peoples but I do have it. mine is based on even and odd numbers and going left to right. left is my negative side and right is my positive side kind of like a battery. I do it without thinking about it and it is embarrassing when someone points it out. I touch my toes and fingers together. I blink and chew my gum at the same time. and all of these must work out mathmatically or I start over. If i scratch the left side of my face i must do the same to the right.
i keep trying to make things in order, i keep checking my bed before i sleep, i spend time making things look strait on my coffee table, i keep making the speakers here strait, i keep pushing against the railing on my staircase, i make weird noises with my throat, like sounding like i'm suffacating, i keep flexing my hand and throat, i keep looking at the edge of my eye's, i keep sniffiling my nose, like i'm on crack, and bend my nose from left to right. i thought his was normal
@NausicaaRaine That's what I've wondered too. How did he host Double Dare. But the mind is so unexplained that one minute, something doesn't bother you, and then the next minute, it does. Something like that.
@NausicaaRaine Yes, maybe it does bother him more when he's at home. Good point. In fact, I've noticed that when I'm in another town visiting family, sometimes I feel more free from OCD.
my ocd is morphing now into: right after I say something, I have to say it again if I mispronounce or even stutter or even hesitate or pause at a certain word. SOmeitmes I say things 5 or 10 times but of course not in public. My poor wife has to listen to this shit.
I never realized before that hoarding was a symptom of OCD. In that case, it runs in the family. Both my paternal grandparents are hoarders, and I'm a bit of a packrat myself.
Also, I wondered how Marc Summers dealt with Double Dare once I found out he had OCD. Now I know. To quote the Nostalgia Critic: "Dude, you got balls."
I have OCD but I'm not a "cleanliness-freak" But some of the things shown in the video are similiar to mine. The thing the guy was doing with the clothing hangars being an excact measurement away from each other; just like me. When I walk by my Ironing Board, I place my hand quickly on the metal of the Iron. Most of the time it's off but one time it was on. One would think after beiong burnt, I'd stop. But I still do it everyday... :(
I have OCD, but it seems that people with OCD are mainly people who could not overcome a traumatic event in their youth involving a major loss of someone close to them. Any other OCD's with a traumatic event in their youth?
I agree, OCD is misunderstood. Most think it is to do with getting "annoyed" by little things like cleaning. The full extent of OCD is far worse, when people develop irrational fears that can cause them to lead disfunctional lives.
This is a serious question: do any of you think Scrubs helped? In any way? Dr. Kevin Casey (look it up if you want) is a doctor with OCD, and I wonder if it helped opening peoples eyes... I had never heard of OCD before I saw him, and I think it's really nicely done in Scrubs, with all respect.
I agree. Alot of these OCD videos on utube are about the typical hand washing and checking and there clearly not enough to stop these poeple functioning or working. This is not the high end of the disorder.
Yes, OCD is most certainly misunderstood. The problems mentioned in this video are very, VERY minor problems when you look at the typical problems of someone who has a serious bout with the disorder.
@LiveFastDieYoung15 i wish i had OCD, my anxiety manifests itself as full blown panic attacks, extreme agoraphobia, crippling fatigue, thoughts of suicide, lashing out at people i love, its pretty much ruined my life and i wish i were dead. OCD sounds like fun! compared to being a very lonely scared prisoner in your own house
I'm definitely a "checker." I have gotten out of bed to check and see if the front door was locked and the stove was off after already checking it several times before. I then also had to make sure nobody was hiding in my apartment which meant checking every possible crevice and closet.
I understand how it is, even though my OCD is not as bad as his is (was?). I have to make sure the cat has'nt been trapped in the fridge, it does'nt really matter if I have the cat in my f*****g arms, i still feel the need to do it, and it is really hard to do that before you go to work. My OCD expresses itself in other ways as too.
OCD is interesting and I think often misunderstood, it can take many forms. A lot of people think it's just compulsive tidying and washing but there can be so many different kinds of OCD. I have it, however I don't have the tidying compulsion at all, my house is a tip, as is my desk at work. My OCD manifests itself in the form of twitching, strange hand gestures and more worryingly morbid ruminations. But I think mental illness is never starightforward, no two cases are alike.
Exactly, and in that case for example I have it in the exact opposite way that you do. I have never suffered from twitching, making certain gestures, or counting things. I am of the organizing and categorizing kind.
I think there's two kinds, OCD with and OCD withouth overt compulsions. I think there is a little bit of crossover in me however, although I'm not tidy I do seem to count things, like how many times I look at an object, 7 always seemed a neat number to me, so a very small part of me must crave neatness.
You know I tend to wonder how many times I go over certain things. I am not going to count because that may start a new bad habit, so I will let it go. Good luck in dealing with it. I have good days and bad....bad in being that I just can't get past certain simple things.
@Hvitiris Oh the sensitivity for others, the humanity, the awareness with which you serve and take every step. "Shall I part my hair behind. Do I dare to eat a peach?" T.S Elliot. Your OCD, gosh, durn it, could save will bring so much validation to so many. It could save the environment too. People who suffer this are Christ martyrs. YOUR OCD SURE WILL SAVE THE PLANET! Its not a disease at all, its transfiguration of humankind. If the ignorant will give you credit for suffering for the world
Read Explaining colours to a blind man. Not only will it enlighten many as to what living with a mental illness is like, it also gives comfort to those sufferers who think there is no hope and that they are alone. It is very informative, sometimes shocking but also very funny in parts. All in all, a good read and highly recommended.
I remember the day Mark went public and talked about his disorder. It made me sad that he was suffering alone from compulsive behavior. I think it was great that he went public cause there are so many people suffering from this! His experience can help other people to look for help to improve their quality of life. Thanks for your courage Mark on confessing this and for being so professional in all the work you do. I LOVE Unwrapped! Wish you all the success in the world!
