I enjoyed your tour... thanks for sharing! I actually laughed out loud when I saw the cable mess. I know how cables can get out of hand. Happens to me, too. I read all the comments below your video and my heart sunk when I read that your awesome setup was robbed. I am building a similar setup and was considering locking the panels to a steel frame with posts in the ground with concrete to deter theft. I might attach a padlock to the panels and steel mounts. Really sorry for your loss.
If you're still plugged in to the grid and you are generating more electricity than you use, your meter will start going backwards and the power company will owe you money. It's suggested that you have a battery system if you want to go off grid completely. This is all pretty new to me, but I really want to learn how to do this.
¿ Is It possible to live with 10 panels like those and two wind thnigs ? Im talking about a normal life, with pc, light ( with leds) tv, xbox360, owen, etc. And how much will it be. ¿ Need a battery? Thanks
Hmmn, so you've got a little outbuilding setup out in the middle of a field somewhere with a wind turbine and 3 solar panels propped up on the ground and transmitting radio and stuff huh?
Robbed? I hate theives and crooks. You are very cool and nice to share your knowledge here. You need security that will send an alert to your phone when interrupted. Also something that will scare the hell out of robbers. Laura
Ok, I enjoyed your presentation because it was very honest and informal. I am going to emulate your project and if I need any advise, I will be in touch. Again, thanks for explaining to those of us who are not so savvy on these matters. Felix.
Hello, I got a Marine air on discount shelf at west marine and cant seem to figure out how to convert my 24v to 12v so I dont have to buy 24v inverter, dose anyone have an easy solution to my problem? Maybe some kinda dule charger or something, I'm stumped! I want it all to one bank of four at 12v? I've been searching for weeks.
Don't wait too long for the "cheap technology" to hit the stores. For now Billypop's equipment is here and available. You'll wait forever for the equipment that you read about in the press releases and if it does what the company's makers say it does it will be sold out to commercial interests for years to come. Do what Billy does and maybe use conduit and the right wire. Otherwise, way to go Billy! Keep up the interest.
Thanks for demonstrating the ease with which free men may communicate with one another. I hope arrangements like yours become as common as brass napkin holders.
Windmill setup ranges dramatically. Anywhere from $2000 on up forever. There is a company installing windmills here in Maine, just the cost of the windmill itself is over $2 million.
Hey, ever thought of running a 12v motor to a harbor freights 10,000 watt power head, pully and belt drive would take some figuring but this is like my set up and I just need $250 for the power head. Then maybe a small float charger to help the batteries recycle? I need more watts but am on a budget.
Um, i don't mean to sound stupid, but what do you need to get to plug anything(like a phone, or lamp) into whatever , but with solar power. All i know is solar panel, battery, and controller. Plz help.
I think some people do not like when someone else is doing something productive with there life so they have to go a head and ruin it for them. I hope they give your stuff back or get more stuff cheaply. I see in your video you cover two means of creating natural power, have you ever looked and microhydro? You should see about having a camera man so that you can explain things in more details yourself. detail. Keep posting these informative videos
That totally sucks!!! What are they going to do with it? They cant sell it...who will buy 4 used batteries? Come on...somebody must have not liked the fact you are not paying the bill...
They didn't take the crappy batteries they took all the solar panels, the inverters, meters and the controllers. And a bunch of radios and power supplies for the radios.
OMG, that is seriously mean, and i didn't even see this, 'till now, and ,thank you so much by the way. You should definetly do a website for people to donate money for you to replace it,I would definetly donate. Your awesome for doing this, and hope you have a green christmas :)
Each solar panel produces 80 watts per hour on a sunny day. The Windmill produces rather variable amounts of electricity even on a windy day. The AirX produces up to 450 Watts with a 30MPH wind.
You rock, thanks for the info. I've been looking into Solar now for a few weeks. Im a noob. All of the info I have found here @ Utube, has been awesome. However David, you have been the most inspiring. I dont own a home. I live in the city, and Im looking to get a system set up inside my apartment to save me some money. Every penny I save, is a penny I can use to purchase googles stock!!! =)
You could make a portable system that you could take with you when your lease is up? I have also been surfin for good information and when I get it all together my channel will try to have easy info For dummys like me! Renewable energy starts whith the small guy And I'm gonna pass my info on for free to people who want to know. soon couple more weeks.
here are some things you should do... box the batteries in up at waist height and vent them outside. the nasty vapors my the batteries eat away at electronics and the hydrogen poses a fire/explosion hazzard. ground everything to a ground rod (if not several)..outside. conduit, put wire in conduit... safer and neater. fused..everything.. fires happen. lightning arrestors, on the wind genny and the solar array both.

Oh, for newbie like me...here's block diagram of these solar/wind system.
3 Solar Panels (in parallel) connected to Charge Controller then to Battery and then to Inverter.... Very simple, isn't it?
And his Wind Power is connected directly to Battery. I am asking him, why not connect to the Charge Controller?
And if you want more power (wattage), add more Solar Panels and if you want more storage, add more Batteries.....
That simple ...Isn't it?.........

My neighbor runs his whole house on Solar / Wind. We live on the edge of a canyon, so we get strong winds in the winter, gusts up to 100M.P.H.
My friend in Utah just put in a 17 KiloWatt Solar kit on his roof.
I have a 16 x 50 foot mobile home which i installed facing south. I've replaced and put in five new large 4'x6' windows facing south.
I save $50-$100 a month on my heating bill.
According to the Science channel, cheap solar technology exists. I can't wait till it hits the stores.

slwale2006 4 years ago
Electricity is in a way like water. Let's say you had a swimming pool and you filled it with water with a garden hose.
If you were drawing out if it with a fire hose it would empty to a point (rather fast) that the garden hose could not keep it full.
So depending how fast you are drawing you must be filling as fast or faster or the swimming pool will be empty.
That is all figured by lables on the devices that do the filling and the emptying.
