The thing most people are missing is that clear cutting (not for forest fires...) is in some cases a good thing, I'm in a highschool technical program and we just clear cutted a couple acres of younger hardwood and we have some amazing grouse and turkey habitat now.
the way these guys are logging is very sustainable and non-destructive compared to the way forests were clear-cut a few generations ago.
for those reading these comments thinking this isn't green, take a look at the way they are clear-cutting the rainforest in brazil to grow cash-crops. that is about a million times more threatening to the planet than several hundred hectares in oregon.
google "deforestation in brazil" if you don't believe me. it should be more of a global issue.
I guess I don't understand how people are saying logging is bad for the environment. I'm a forestry major and know all about this shit. Logging is awesome for the environment if done well.
If you don't manage the forests they are going to burn down. Furthermore, too many trees actually mean less grasses for wildlife, so wildlife habitat is lost. Because of the need to fight wildfires for the protection of humans and wildlife, we actually have more trees and less wildlife habitat then 100 years ago. In the US we have good land management, and if you stop the logging here it will simply transfer to some 3rd world country that doesn't. Wood and paper are worldwide commodities.
u speak of things which you have no understanding of grasshopper. burning doesnt destroy forests, LOGGING does. and replants take 70-80 years before they become a functional part of the ecosystem. in your opinion we have "good" land management??? well we only have 6% of the forests left in the united states! ya moron. so whats good about that? and were cutting them down for reality t.v.. and paper is made from cotton mostly ya ignorant easily influenced lemming.
@eweezy528 I dont think that you understand that people just dont go threw and say lets make a giant clear cut. There is alot that goes into logging. back in the 1800s NH was cleared 87% of there forests to make room for farms and agriculture and by the 1880s large amounts of people cleared out leaving there farms behind. Now NH is the secound most forested state in the US. being over 84% of the state forested. The forests are properly manged to meet the land owners need. TREES GROW BACK.
you base your statements on nothing more than the rhetoric you read somewhere useless information. the first roads through a forest are logging roads i have been witnessing this destruction for 30 yrs in the northwest and i find your opinion offensive. what farmland is needed on the side of a mountain 20 miles away from a town? the trees are being sold and used for lumber. mostly for furniture. so suck it
@eweezy528 I aquired this information by Professer at the University of New Hampshire. My statement are not useless eather is the information is crusial to manging forest stands. Come talk when you stop "witnessing this destruction" and actualy learn about the distruction. After a clear cut is done low shrubs will move in and provide cover and food for wild life. that might have otherwise been choked out buy the thick canopy of the forest. Come talk when you can actualy make a good argument.
again you acquired this information from people who cut down all the forests. of course they can rationalize their destruction thats why they did it. and not the people personally i mean the mentality. nomatter who shares it, it remains wrong. you are not educated you are mis led. therfore you are not educating me you are mis leading me, because you yourself have been mis led. ask your professor how the forests grew in the first place without the help of the forest service or fire men.
@eweezy528 Well gee thanks for educating me. I have lived in places that had to be evacuated a couple of times because of real forest fires. Perhaps I imagined them? Also, like lweigle, I live in an area, Minnesota now, and the Black Hills of SD that is heavily forested. We are not currently clear cutting either of these areas. Paper and wood companies want the trees to grow back, and they realize it takes years and that is why they have millions of acres.
again bro you base these words on what? it is obviously not fact. don't thank me im sure i could educate you all day. wanting something to grow back and destroying the forests for profit thinking they are one in the same is a moron. like you. unfortunately i don't have the time to explain it to you.
@eweezy528 get back in your little city appartment and complain to someone else cause these loggers aint stoppin'!and im with them every bit of the way
@eweezy528 By the way, burning does destroy forests. Just this summer I was on top of a mountain that was still deforested from a fire that I had to be evacuated from back in 1988 over 20 years ago near Keystone, SD. The forest has not yet grown back. In fact, it will probably take longer than logging because no one has a vested interest in replanting and the Forest Service can only do so much.
by the way burning does NOT destroy it actually makes the trees grow back stronger and more fire resistant. learned that among the redwoods of California the rings that grew after a huge fire scar ring were thicker and fires that occurred later left a smaller black scar from fire. fire is natural. cutting all the trees down selling them is not. therefore your field trip in SD has nothing to do with the great NW. in-fact you have no forests in SD. so thanks for the advice.
@eweezy528 No forest in SD really? I wonder what makes the Black Hills black? Perhaps I just imaged all the trees in northern Minnesota the other day? Oh you're from the "great NW," so you must know everything about trees. Us stupid in flyover country just need to come to the coasts for a little edumication right?
@In trenches you dont know me and you dont know logging, educate yourself before you mouth off to people you dont know and occupations you dont know shit about. yea im very confident, ill kick the living shit out of you and then make a sandwich out of it and shove it down your throat. ha ha
yea, these guys act tough on the internet, i guess its the only place they can mouth off and not get the shit kicked out of them, ha ha i dont let these guys bother me, i kinda get a kick out of em. lol But on a serious note, The general public does not know much about the industry, and all it takes is an idiot on tv spewing crap out his mouth and the general public actually believes it.

@CanadianPatriot86 the laws are selectively enforced, your plan of regulation just means the little guy gets screwed over hard, you have no idea what your talking about..
@vidarjens I'd rather the little guy get screwed over than everyone get screwed over when we run out of natural resources, which will happen eventually.
@CanadianPatriot86 you know very little about the situation here in the northwest. There are plenty of trees, if trees are not harvested from time to time they can get diseased or be at risk for a major "Natural" forest fire. trees are a renewable resource, you have no idea what your talking about.
@vidarjens not all natural forest fires are bad, and I'm talking about clear cutting and taking too much without replanting. You're making an assumption, you have no Idea how much I know or don't know about the subject.
