I think Kevins curse is just how much people are attached to his first three movies, it was a very specific time and place for us just as much as it was for him. They're part of our youth and part of our lives.... they're part of us. I think when we watch one of his new movies we're looking to recreate those feelings we had as kids, but they're gone and they're impossible to recreate.
I don't know why people hate Mallrats so much, that fucking movie was like the teenager Gen X bible... The character of Brodie made the movie what it was with his over the top dialog and extreme passion (frustration) with every line delivered. Jay and Silent Bob got way more screen time than in Clerks and Chasing Amy and were actually defined and fleshed out as the the lovable and helpful side kicks... I feel like I'm living in Bizzaro world when I hear people liked Clerks and Chasing Amy more.
Learning that Kevin Smith likes Anthrax AND King Diamond has made my respect for him go up even more. Who knew Smith liked a thrash band? Awesomeness.
@metalahhhhhhhhhhhh You wouldn't think it, but metalheads are just the friendliest music people. Honorable exceptions in the realm of black metal, hah.
I showed my friend Max this one part from an evening with Kevin Smith and he bust up laughing and asked if he ever saw clerks and said no so sometime this week I'm going over to his place to show him clerks.

Our theater in the mall only costs $2.50 for a ticket and after 6 p.m it's $6.00 to see a flick. The only thing is it's a 35 minute drive to get to the mall from my house. But i've never seen a smith flick i thought sucked. His movies are like gold. Who wants to see the same corny action flick over and over again. How bout some great wordplay mixed with dick and fart jokes??
my problem with going to the cinema isn't the price or the traveling, it's the fact that there is ALWAYS a group of atleast 5 obnicous cunts, possibly Emo kids, sitting together talking at the top of their voice and ruining the mood for everyone.
@Hughezy almost took the words out of my mouth, and what makes it worse where i go to watch movies even if its a comedy nobody will laugh besides me and my date/friend, being the only people laughing in a theatre makes you feel like an ass
@Hughezy I'm Emo and what you've said there is a huge fucking stereotype. I hate it when people speak over the fucking film! So please get your facts right before stereotyping minorities.
@Hughezy ....What the actual fuck is your problem? Just because you've had some bad experiences with certain people you think belongs to our subculture doesn't mean you should stereotype us all! That's like having one bad date and then deciding to go gay!

That's the textbook definition that was coined nearly 50 years ago. I'm doing my own reinterpretation. 'Auteur' after all is just french for author, and if you really want to consider yourself the true author of a work, you should be involved with it at every stage in some form, from inception to completion. Not to slieight Scorsese and the Berg, but I don't really see them as consummate storytellers like I do say Smith, Woddy Allen, or Oliver Stone.

I like Kevin Smith's movies and think he's an interesting and entertaining character. I think it's likely that he could have a big hit movie in the future. He certainly seems to have the connections and the talent to make it happen.
"Spielberg plays to his audience. Scorsese plays to his audience. Their audiences are just bigger than mine."
But the difference between them and Kevin Smith is that they are willing to challenge themselves with different genres and ideas. Scorsese will direct a large-scale biopic, then a concert film, and then move on to a gritty crime film. Smith just does the same type of film over and over, and the formula works, but it's still a formula.
But don't you think a lot of it has to do with how much passion and drive that person just has?
Mr Smith said before, some people just a have PASSION to make movies. Also, being on a set is not all magic.
Mr. Smith enjoys what he does and he likes his friends with him when he works. Furthermore, why is it written in stone that you constantly have to churn out Michelangelo's with every next pic??
I don't see how any of that refutes what I said. If Kevin Smith is going to actually compare himself to two of our finest living directors, I'm going to call him on it. If Scorsese and Spielberg constantly challenge themselves with new material due to a "passion" that Smith lacks, then my argument still stands. And no, it's not set in stone that every movie you make has to be a classic, but I never said that.
how the hell do u know if kevin smith doesnt have a passion for making movies? thats just an asinine thing to say. im a fan of Kevin Smith the persona i only like a few of his flicks so dont say Im on his nuts.
1) Mr Smith is not comparing "HIS" directing skills with those other directors.
2) You are "Calling him out on that"..because.."YOU" are making that comparison.
3)Only Mr. Smith can answer the passion question.
4)Mr Smith is "FUNNY", has a kick butt job and is blessed a million times over(Like all of us) and can you think of anyone else who has come out and said, "Hey! Get off yr butt and make yr movie. If i can do it......you can too." ..??
Unlike Spielberg and Scorsese, Smith is a true auteur, meaning he writes and directs and even stars in all his own flicks. Just because they have a common style doesn't make them formulaic. If you wanna talk formulas, how about Spielbergs penchant for making mawkish bullshit, or Scorsese's habit of making long-ass and overrated crime dramas. Not to mention both of them ADAPT work that's already been successful in other mediums rather than having their handpicked writers generate new stories.

I feel similarly. Although "Zack and Miri" was a huge let down and the next movie doesn't sound interesting to me I'm enjoying hearing ol' Kevin chat in these vids.
Yeah. Zack and Miri was very disappointing and I had pretty low expectations for it.
But, It is nice to hear him realize that it is good to challenge yourself and even better for him to realize that arguing with teenagers on a message board just kind of makes a person seem pathetic.
I love Tracy Jordan. The next movie could be great.
I was hoping Anthrax was capitalized for a reason in the Blurb Sidebar over there. Small A anthrax sucks mad. Seems you just got to wind Kev up and let him go. Bet he swears way more off camera.

Dude I dug it - but it had to grow on me. Second watch [and every one after] I laughed my fcukin ass off.

I was hoping Anthrax was capitalized for a reason in the Blurb Sidebar over there. Small A anthrax sucks mad. Seems you just got to wind Kev up and let him go. Bet he swears way more off camera.
