  • Superb! TY for posting

  • Superb! TY for posting

  • A hot Polish babe.

  • i think the expressions are cute :) plus it shows she's into the music, personally i like that

  • Excellent clip. Josewfowicz has really good, controlled, and expressive sound. The orchestra is relatively weak. The conductor's choice on the tempo of some segments is rather amateurish in my opinion.

  • very correct, and divine playing...

  • Her facial expression lols me :) Otherwise one of the best playings of the Mac Bruch Concerto

  • it's like she knows that the sound waves her violin gives out are meant to distroy a human eating dragon spewing flames. and she's fighting that dragon knowing the power of her sound and personality. She's like a goddess. This video is out of this world. + no shoulder rest i always loved that about her

  • where did the dislikes come from?????

    Oh, viola players :P

  • She is a mammoth talent! It's like saying you don't like Michael Jordan's face when he plays (he used to bite his tongue as it stuck out a little). These are silly observations and irrelevant. Liela is a MacArthur Foundation "Genius" award winner. She has impeccable technique and is superbly expressive. This is a wonderful performance! Brava!

  • @justwarren

I was always liking her vibrato!very personal..

  • Ich liebe dieses konzert... Leila für mich die BESTE interpretin überhaupt! Für sie mußte Bruch dieses konzert komponiert haben...

  • to all who criticize her, see if you can play the violin decently first before you give a negative feedback, ok?

  • Comment removed

  • Che donna

  • Leila is a fantastic violinist, but, with this monkey faces.....i prefer Vengerov...

  • te amo LeilaJosefowicz!!!!!

  • I love how she makes faces, while she plays the violin.

  • @peteguy2400 She looks like she's giving birth.... ;P

  • I think this song is harder to master than most other songs. It took me like 1 month to just completely master the 1 movement.

  • What orchestr a is this? they sound amazing

  • I don't like her violin at all. Even when she is really digging into the strings, you can't hear it very well. It's not a very powerful violin, suprisingly.

  • Comment removed

  • @MontgomeryMonteiro not really...she arrived early in 4:36 - 4:41

  • @esther8495 Anyway I loved the performance. Exciting!

  • i could laugh all day about her faces :) holly shit, what a nice girl and what a bad mimic-making!

P.S. the interpretation is not bad

  • facial expressions havent changed haha

    /watch?v=LYb4nqtvkqs&feature=related

  • I love leila in this video!

  • Most violinists don't choose to make faces. Facial expressions are universal and occur naturally when musicians give themselves to the beauty of the music. Also, you can see her orgasm face at 2:52

  • Leila is amazing. So much passion.

  • Loucaa... adoro..kkk

  • qué maravilla de composición!. Gracias!

  • You can't play anything "for real" unless you show a little emotion. Show a lot of emotion and play beyond belief. Now how is that hard to understand??

  • I assume that all of you that make such comments with a lack of criteria and the most important thing lack intelligence must be addicts to heroin

  • Take a look at Yo Yo Ma, Joshua Bell, Maxim Vengerov, Glenn Gould, and so many other musicians who have very pronounced facial and body expressions. Why would this detract from anyone's listening pleasure?? Why would anyone care? Music is an aural experience, not necessarily visual. I think it's great that first class musicians really "get into the music." Maybe that's why they're first class musicians.

  • i honestly find her facial expressions unnecessary and takes away from this otherwise spectacular performance

  • 40 people need 2 clean out the wax in their ears so they can hear the true beauty of this piece

  • Well played. But still it seems to me there is more passion in her face that in her playing. Maybe this is because after feeling to the fire in Janine Jansen's interpretation, any other feel just warm.

  • 2:09 LOL

  • She seems like she can't control her hands and she's surprised by the music she creates <3

  • Her expression is so thoughtful and beautiful, as if I can actually hear the music speaking to me.. love this interpretation of Bruch. Go Leila!

  • her face looks like shes in pain someimtes

  • cool down, darling :)

she seems, beeing a bit tensed.

P.S. Igor,si je dis des bêtises tu me reprends!

  • she's nothing special, really...

  • terrible

  • @jasonform Terrible? Are you serious? There are a lot of words to describe this performance, but terrible just isn't one of them. You may not love her style or interpritation, but it's just not terrible. And if you truly think it is, then please, by all means, post a video of your own not-terrible rendition of this piece!

  • A me della faccia non me ne frega un cazzo! Questa signora suona benissimo: tecnica, musicalità.........ma possibile che ancora ci sia gente che non ascolta la musica e si ferma alla faccia????????????'

    Awesome video and performance!

  • so many comments about her face, jeez PEOPLE YOU LISTEN WITH YOUR EARS, NOT YOUR EYES and obviously you are ignoring leila's most spectacular performance, sheesh.

  • @BBRENTTAGHAPP Yeah, her faces are classically weird, but her playing is absolutely incredible!!! I cannot get over the tone she produces. Absolutely stunning when I first started listening to her, and now. *goofy grin*

  • look at her face...xDD haha...FUNNY okay but anyways this is BRILLIANT man...MAAAAN¨¨¨¨¨wows

  • she needs to bow stragihter

  • @ninjalikesweapons hahahahaha, now thats funny

  • FEEL

  • Lol. Her Facial Expressions.

    Nevertheless Amazing Piece

  • TOO much!

  • Her expression of this piece is twice as manly as Bell's. lol

  • ❺stars ★★★★★

  • facial/body over-expressions ? KEITH JARRETT anyone ????

  • Where is that lovely 9 years old Leila? You changed, you don't need that much facial expressions, do you?

  • over face expression....

  • I don't see how you can redicule someone on their method of expressing their emotion, especially someone like Leila - an outstanding musician.

Don't ever watch/listen to Glenn Gould if you find this overly expressive..

    To each his own.

  • Question: What is the similarity between an actor and a musician?

Answer: Both act out their emotions.

  • She is like an untamed beast

  • She is wasting her effort in vain despite her talent.

Her artistic quality is seriously spoiled by her boast of technique which is a common problem in a lot of musicians. To me she looks and sounds like an athlete who is repeatedly winning. She even talks like an athlete! Her music is fake! I can't hear true emotion. Sad. Wasted talent.

  • Are we just a bit jealous?

  • @s1306893 couldnt disagree with you more

  • Rather than waste any of her thought process or energy or concentration keeping a inner dialogue going, "I have to watch my facial expression--I have to try and do this or that..I am in performance.." she has simply decided to allow all of her energy and concentration to be devoted to the performance and "go with it"...You might note Kogan flinch a bit and he concentrates to keep it under control..she chooses to just let it rip, if she finds it helps her performance concentration, great.

  • ha ha OMB. good to see you here. obviously came to get ur lelia fix. yes i noticed that kogan flinch, always wondered about it.

i think mr vengerov (you know i love his playing) is somehat plagued by the letting it rip syndrome. but still he sounds great as does leila here

  • This is just plain perfect!!! I can't really say anything bad about it, her interpritation is a lot like the other TOP violinist but the PASSION WOW!! you can tell she loves this piece. AMAZING 5stars

  • @64f100bill isnt it just amazing. the passion just oozes out of her. all of her playing is like this

  • @64f100bill because she makes idiot faces?idiot s like you belive that this faces mean musicality or passion...

  • @jasonform actually I do think that the faces are alittle over the top, but honestly, close your eyes and listen, you can feel the passion, so maybe you shouldn't judge.. and also this movement is the one that I thought was good.. her finally is not very good, prob b/c she is thinkin to much about her next face expression, but this movement is well deserved of praise from me

  • @64f100bill Check Janine Jansen. She really outplays her..

  • Rockers' trance A` La Yngwie Malmsteen :)

  • Sorry you'll have to explain! :)

  • Overly expressive like Yngwie on his guitar - It's the artist choice but often time, I'd prefer not to look at the stage act to better enjoy the music!

  • i just got back from watching her play with the north Carolina Orchestra. Great Show!! Amazing.

  • listen ppl LISTEN w ur ears, the faces are irrelevent to the playing whhc is magnificent and full of emotion the same applies to m.vengerov and his grimaces they are immaterial to the expressivity of playing

    leila is fantastic

  • I love her faces!

  • beautiful :)

  • Troppe smorfie

  • She looks alive when she plays the violin. All of her emotions are showing through the different parts of the piece. You can even see the pain as she removes the violin at 5:41

  • The best musicians are able to show their emotions through the music, they don't need any face expressions.

  • They don't need any face expressions but they probably need something else: Keith Jarret, for instance kicks the piano while playing and does something that resembles singing but nobody understands what it is. :) Anyway if you suggest to him what to do that would be completely another expression and that would be ruined and sterile expression. Nobody cannot actually command musician how to express themselves. If you do so you can destroy this very expression.

  • It's not really what I meant. And here I agree with you ;)

  • the best? no kasienia, that's called a generalization, and an assumption.

I'm sure there are many out there who can, but you make some faces you woudln't necessarily approve of...

  • I think she exaggerated with the face expressions lol

  • Kind of, for a performance with "standars", you know :P. But, as it has been said, it´s better to focus on what she mean with those expressions and integrate the messenge with the sound, trying to find coherence. I find it by now (I`m writting this while hearing the video :P)... Sorry my english!

  • still. she exaggerated lol

  • ok... got it

  • no violinist has this character at the music. Unique and Fantastic!!!

  • I saw her perform in this dress a few months ago at Seattle Symphony. I can't remember the music at all. I remember her awkward stance and feeling like it was a huge distraction. I just closed my eyes at that point but even in then I could not get her gesticulations out of my head.

She should go with the J. Bell approach. All black.

  • (continued) Besides I personally never said there was a HUGE difference in sound. i was just replying to a person who thought that playing with a shoulder rest makes the violin MORE ressonant. which is untrue. that is all. pls read my comments to the point of understand them and dont misconstrue wat i say. thank you

  • who said anything about suffering? MANY of Z. Bron's students play without shoulder rests. ive seen them in concerts. Aaron Rosand plays without one as do all his students for example Ray Chen. Do you think all these great violinists are stupid enough to play suffering in pain for the sake of a LITTLE bit of extra ressonance? come on. (to be continued)

  • hmmmm... I don't really like her interpretation. It seems as if she's attacking the intrument instead of working with it. And she seriously doesn't have continuous vibrato!!!! And her bow is crooked most of the time... I do appreciate her engery though. How old is she in this reocrding?

  • my heart be still~

A beautiful movement, a beautiful musician.

  • She is a great player. I love to watch her facial expression. If you dont want to watch, just listen to the fantastic music and dont complain about this and that.

  • Good playing. When she was 13 year's she was play more better (it's my opinion).

  • I LOVE her playing! MARVELOUS portemento--her playing is distinquished from others by this marvelous and unique style that is hers alone

  • great playing, as always of course. but her facial expression is a huge distraction, i think.

she has a different bow hold now?

  • I'm sorry, but as much as I enjoyed the performance I still have to ask: Why is this video not under the comedy category?

  • @ezwiz333 You obviously don't take art seriously AT ALL. Shame.

  • It supposed to be violin playin not boxin!

  • great playing, but its hard to watch.

  • jajajaja no mames yo crei que maxim vengerov hacia caras cagadas, con esta señorita llama mas la atencion sus expresiones faciales que lo que toc pero aun asi toca muy bien

  • this woman is only a question for me...

    i can not like this!

  • she suffers a lot.

  • How pure she is!!!Alas.

  • Very nice, 5 stars ۞ ۞ ۞ ۞ ۞

  • Is she making sex with violin?

  • 砍柴的少女?

  • felmale heifetz

  • Saw her last night playing contemporary composer Knussen at the Kennedy Center. Inspired ! Magnificent.

  • Thanks Leila for visit Rio last summer. Brazil loves you!

  • Brazil loves you Leila! ;D

  • I live in Minneapolis too, and I was in that concert...I could not see the faces so well because I was sitting far, but I heard the music and I was not sold. I found this video and her face seems extremily phony: she looks like a heavy metal musician...she knows exactly what she's doing. Yuck.

As further proof Kavakos just played this weekend in MInneapolis and blew her out of the water. And the guy could not look any nerdier :-)

  • Yeah I agree. I had a few friends see her play this piece last weekend in Minneapolis, and they didn't seem to enjoy this style. In her interview she said that she "treated it as if it was any 20th century work", which is a little bit far-fetched. This version is a little too ridiculous for me. She has a very good tone though, and she is a wonderful player.

  • Man ļoti patīk!!!

  • actually its the opposite. playing without the shoulderrest makes the instrument more resonant as there are no points in which the shoulder rest is touching the parts of the wood which vibrate allowing the instrument to sing to its full capability. try playing with one and without one in succession and you should hear the difference. in general the less there is on the instrument the less muffled it will be. and that includes mutes also though to a farrrr lesser extent.

  • You hear the difference only because the violin touches more your body, but believe me there's actually no difference in what the audience hear,it's just more uncomfortable!

  • i dont think thats true. even without listening to the sound, purely from a logical and scientific point of view the less that is touching the vibrating wood the more resonant the sound it. certainly you can hear the difference if u heard someone play with a shoulder rest and then immediately play without one. that isnt to say that u cant play with great resonance with a s/r because of course many great violinists do

  • It does the opposite actually. The rubber feet actually prevent the instrument from vibrating/ resonating to its maximum. If you are dependant on a shoulder rest, then you're not holding the violin correctly. Milstein once played a paganini caprice with the violin balanced on his chin to one of his pupils!! Oh... and also it's not dangerous at all. :-)

  • ive replied to your comment already, but id also like to add that i know of a few fantastic violinists who have long necks and who play without a shoulder rest. and i really do mean fantastic. The way you play with a shoulder rest is subtely different to the way u play without one so u cant just assume that when u take the shoulder rest off u can apply the same technical approach. many things change..for one the activity of the thumb etc etc..

  • Lots of great players use shoulder rests. I'm not knocking them. I'm just saying I'm not aware of the neck problems you describe and I've been playing professionally without one for twenty years. Diagnosing pain based on the facial expressions of a musician is a little silly. I could cite many examples. of players who make all kind of faces. Obviously if not using a shoulder rest caused Josefowicz pain she would use one. Citing your HS orchestra is not exactly a great source.

  • I think I finally figured out why Leila made such agonizing expressions in this video...she did not have a shoulder support on her violin!! It's very painful playing without it because it puts your neck in an awkward position. I've tried it myself and it's just too painful playing without it.

I wonder why she chose to play such a demanding piece of music without the proper shoulder and neck support on her violin.

  • ummm a lot of people play without shoulder rests. A lot of the old greats did and of course violinist played without them before shoulder rests existed. Its just a different style of playing. She probably plays everything without one. And I'm sure it isn't painful. You couldn't play that well if you were in pain.

  • Do you realize how many top players never used a shoulder rest in their career? Stern and Perlman in addition to Leila Josefowicz to name a few. I think they've done okay. By the way, I'm a professional violist and one of my teachers was Joseph de Pasquale, who is surely one of the greatest violist of the century and he didn't use one nor did he allow any of his students to use one and I don't know of anyone who is experiencing the neck problems you describe. Where did you come up with that?

  • Furthermore, the use of a shoulder rest has nothing to do with musicianship...it's just a safety precaution. Grammy-winning violinist Hilary Hahn and Sarah Chang both play WITH shoulder rests.

  • Zucchini, your comments really show, i'm sorry to say this, a pretty big ignorance about violin playing in general!

    1. The expressions of Josefowicz are, I think, a product of the show business: playing for TV, Royal Albert Hall... needs a spectacular performance, and maybe she thought this was the best way to do it. You pointed out that, in comparison to the Gypsy Airs video, she's showing much more pain in Bruch. How can it be possible when she is playing without shoulder rest in both cases?

  • 2. We could certainly do a huge list of the best violinist in the music history that never played with shoulder rest. From Vivaldi, Tartini, Paganini, Ysaÿe... to Oistrakh, Kogan, Milstein, Menuhin, Heifetz... and all of them were, without any doubt, masters of the violin.

  • 3. Safety precaution?? The shoulder rest is a late invention to help the musicians saving the distance between the shoulder and the violin, but it was never ment to be a fix gadget attached to a violin. The best pedagogues always say one should be able to play with and without, with no difference.

  • Comment removed

  • The best pedagogues says that playing with or without shoulder rest is a completely different technique of playing. You cannot play one day with a shoulder rest and the day after without it!By having a shoulder rest you have a different level of stablity of your violin in general,of your bow on the strings....but what really makes impossible to play good with or without it,it's that you should learn a piece two times because all (and i say ALL) of the shiftings are different!

  • Zucchini, I don't think you are ignorant, it's just I don't think your reasons are actually very strong...

Facial expressions are a way musicians have to express and make more emphatic their interpretations, and sometimes it can be a bit exagerate, like Leila in this video. Watch Joshua Bell, the pianist Lang Lang... and you can see the same thing!

  • Maybe I should look at myself in the mirror when I'm playing the violin to see if I make any facial expressions, LOL. Yesterday, I tried playing the violin without the shoulder rest, and it feels like I had less control of my wrists and fingerings, even though it did resonate a little better without it.

  • but come on... playing without shoulder rest when you have played with it for almost all your life is very difficult! One needs to change the position of the hand, learn how to make shiftings, vibrato... and get used to the feeling of the violin in contac with skin and bone! I myself did the change and I took like 3 months to get used and comfortable with it. And really, after that, I'll never take a shoulder rest again!

  • but look at Rubinstein, Kogan Milstein Zukerman and Heiftez to name but a few. They show little emotion in terms of facial expressions - but the end result is very impassioned. Different strokes for different folks. I think facial expressions are ok up until the point when we start to really notice them and when they take our attention away from the muscial experience.

'lictor313',also known as,'John Harvey',is a registered sex offender.I looked him up on "family watch dog",and he has been charged 5 times with child molestation and possession of 133 images of child porn. This guy cannot control his impulses...

Report him to the youtube management!

    YOU'VE BEEN WARNED!

  • (continued) In this concerto, I find parts which Leila deliverred such gorgeous sound & interpretation that's far better than a lot of past/present violinists. However, there are parts which I felt she might have over-expressed & therefore interfered the smooth transition of certain notes. Therefore, when I finish listening, I felt tired, because I had also worked very hard listening to "too many expression".

Don't get me wrong! Leila is extremely good! ..... but... I'm extremely picky!

  • How can you cry without facial expressions and how can you dance without body movements? In my opinion, facial expressions/body movements are necessary if Leila feels they can help her to achieve (rather than destroy) her desired musical expressions (sound). It's just a question of whether or not she might have over-expressed certain part of this concerto. It's like singing a song and if you emphasize every single word, it won't sound very smooth. (to be continued)

  • she is grate¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡ i love her¡¡¡¡¡ :D

  • So is cheese.

  • i like cheese :)

  • Ha, I can't wait until I get to the point where I can actually have a facial expression when I play!

Great piece, thanks for the post!

  • Seattle Symphony Orchestra??

  • Anyone know what Orchestra this is?

  • it's bbc proms so im 99% sure its the london symphony. basically, london's major symphony

  • thanks bro. ;)

  • Wait, I think that I looked up the conductor and he conducted the Seattle Symphony Orchestra... So... are you still 99% sure?

  • yes he could be guest conducting. trying looking in the archives of the bbc proms

  • give more about 2:24

  • Oh gosh I love her..I felt every note right with her. I wish there were more videos of her on youtube. She is one of the most emotional players ever-she can make me feel a range of color throughout a piece like no other.

  • Bien Leila, muchísimo sentimiento. Brava!!!
