VERY nice ! And I have a thing for new unlaquered horns, and horns that started out laquered but lost much of their finish due to wear and tear. Not sure which this is. Looks like an older model ?
Sweetness in the sound dept. You inspired me to seek out a Short shank from the 40's, it was just a C* so I had it re-faced by my man on the West Coast and is now a .85. Somebody told me if you open up the old selmers too much they become bright. You have the darkest, warmest tone. The window is oval, I think this must be the key!
Warm and...well I hate using the term "sweet" but it is, but without being thin. I hear a lotta folks losin the core/body to their sound when they try to hard to have that sorta sound, but you got it right there.
Thanks. On this clip it was Vandoren ZZ 3 1/2 s. I've moved onto La Voz since the vandorens changed. Check out a guy called Rich Perry- now he has a sound! I think he uses a soloist too.
Have you also tried the Vandoren Javas 3 1/2. Would be interesting to see the difference. The Javas seem more agile to me. I ordered my Selmer Soloist - D size for now. McQueens11 - you should be ashamed of yourself. Just click on "davesax" and you'll see his other videos.
One of the best I have heard on you tube - love your playing, love the tone. Great phrasing and good choice of notes, maybe in another 10 years I'll be there too!
Nice sound. Wondering if you could slap a few other mouthpieces on the same horn for us to hear. Otherwise, just play something - you sound beautiful.
beautiful sound.. make sure you don't lip down too much. its a good technique when used sparingly but if used too often it gets repetitive and too dysinent. Great otherwise (good solo).
Thanks. I recorded it with the video option on my cheap digital camera, really just to hear the mouthpiece. It is a selmer short shank ' D' opened to .105 with a Mark VI sax.
One of the best sounds I've heard on those ? Selmer short shanks. Resonating like a mo fo + nice bottom
