i just wonder how efficient it is...i mean hydrogen is really really expensive unless they find a quick, easy and cheap way to manufacture hydrogen....
This is what the whole world should be driving on right now and would be if SCUM like Luminate or Bilderburg Group were not doing all the Dirty corrupt deals in this world with Saudis and other Big OIL Crooks to try and control the World...I hit the lotto and I'm buying one of these and small Hydrogen Fuel generator still to make fuel. I'll spend rest to stop all BIG OIL forever!
I think this is the way to go. There aren't many car manufactures out there playing with electric cars. Who is going to buy an electric car, hook up their boat and try and drive 6 hrs to their holiday destination.
The damn thing would run out of power within the hour and then you have to wait four hours for the batteries to charge up!
I dont know, I think the internal combustion engine is still the way to go. You wouldn't have BMW playing wth hydrogen for nothing if was all bullshit!
It's funny. BMW started the Hydrogen vehicles and now everyone is starting it, trying to claim they started it. Sorry, the true production hydrogen car was the BMW 7H.
BMW is the only company I know of that has a "production ready" internal combustion Hydrogen vehicle. Everyone else is experimenting with Fuel Cell, which powers essentially electric vehicles. I'd rather have Hydrogen internal combustion
yeah I don't see why we don't give hydrogen internal combustion engines a chance. Apparently it's relatively simple to convert/build regular gasoline IC motors to run on hydrogen and hydrogen production is slightly more environmentally friendly than gasoline production. I don't like electric fuel cell :( can you imagine a silent m5? wtf
THE problem is (and I DO know this as I work in the automotive industry and know this car) storing hydogen at -262C. The H2 atom/molecule is so simple (an molecular mass of 2) it leaks through absolutely everything. The current storage of this means that all the H2 boils off after a week. Storing H2 at fuel stations and transporting it from A to B will take vast investment and the losses are high. There are still stacks of issues to overcome with this.
that could very well be true. I do agree that the largest challenge facing the development and commercialization of internal combustion hydrogen is storing and transporting the fuel itself. I would assume though that the issue with hydrogen being all leaky and shit (hard to transport) is due to it's small atomic radius rather than its low atomic mass.
Nonetheless I think this would be so awesome if there was a way to make it work.
also apparently the mass production of hydrogen as a substitute for petrol gasoline is not quite as efficient, so it still produces more net CO2 to produce hydrogen... but there is loads of research happening with things like biomass and photovoltaic energy used to split H2O
burning hydrogen in an internal combustion engine does not cause any carbon dioxide, just a bit of NOx, but less than 50% of the emissions of petrol driven engines. The problem is to get the hydrogen, here much CO2 is produced, but this is a common problem to the Hydrogen combustion engine and the hydrogen fuel cell.
Couple of points. although Hydrogen can be made from fossil fuels, uranium, it can be synthesized on demand by sending electricity thru water. The main limiting step was to keep the hydrogen molecules separate from oxygen, post electrolysis
Israel has come up with a model using Mg or Al to bind the oxygen away, and they have a model that can do this cheaply for 2500 cost. This may be the car of the future.
Steve Meyer, now deceased, was thought to have developed one of the first water powered cars.
yeah amazing engineering on part of toyota. because of the LS600hL electric motors the car weights 900lbs more and gets only 2mpg better on the road and 4mpg worse on the highway. I'd stick with this car, or the LS460.
This car actually doesn't have a fuel cell - it burns the hydrogen in an old-fashioned internal combustion engine just like gas - and can as a matter of fact still use that, too. I concur many problems remain, however.
@currumbin316 They got 20 years to work things out. Before the Government bans the use of oil for gas, since we need it for more important things like plastic.
Perfect substitute for gasoline. Zero emissions = reduced growth of global warming. I hate the government and oil companies since they don't accept these ideas. When it will be too late, like always, they'll take this substitute and put it to work.
Where does that hydrogen come out of? You don't just wave your hands over water and extract hyrdogen. The amount of energy it takes to split water into hydrogen and oxygen is fairly immense, and where does that power come from? 80% of the world's energy comes from non-renewable resources.
Nothing comes for free; you can't just put water in a tank and expect a car to run. Lots more time and money needs to be put into research.
This is favoring the automotive and oil companies. The reason why they are doing research on hydrogen cars instead of electric cars is because it takes 3x more energy to power a hydrogen car the same distance of an electric car. And the cheapest way to get hydrogen, is through fossil fuels. Remember all the electric cars they destroyed?
Where is this car? on engine type?
Still don't see it on the road.

We should be using solar and wind energy to convert salt water into hydrogen. That way there is no carbon footprint.

1) Cost of a Fuel Cell car is about one million US dollars
2) Fuel cell engine life span is only 3 years
3) It takes twice the electricity to fill a fuel cell vehicle as it would an electric vehicle
4) Billions more required for a hydrogen infrastructure
5) No material known to man can hold enough hydrogen for anything past 100 miles
6) Very poor performance in cold weather
7) Leading Hydrogen research facilities now bailing out of this PR stunt ie Ballard Power

President Bush on Hydrogen Cars, April 22, 2006
Bush: I strongly believe hydrogen is the fuel of the future.
HAL: Actually, it's an energy carrier, not a fuel like oil. This means we have to make it with a real fuel by burning gas, oil, coal or uranium.
Bush: Hydrogen is used in a fuel cell that can power a car that uses no gasoline,
HAL: No gasoline in the car, 99% of all hydrogen is produced with fossil fuel.
HAL11000 4 years ago
Hal....your an idiot.

Personal attacks with no substance? How about demonstrating your "knowledge". You are completely ignorant of this futile technology.
HAL11000 4 years ago
Bush: produces no pollution or greenhouse gas emissions.
HAL: But these are produced when the hydrogen is made, and it takes about 15% more fossil energy to make the hydrogen than ends up in the hydrogen.
Bush: Hydrogen vehicles can be twice as efficient as gasoline vehicles.
HAL: The best hydrogen vehicle is three less efficient as an electric car today.
HAL11000 4 years ago
The only emission is clean H2O or water. Electric vehicles require electricity produced by coal plants and such causing much more pollution.
lerkerofthenight 4 years ago
Bush: Hydrogen can be produced from domestic energy sources,
HAL: It is produced domestically from natural gas, which means we have to import more natural gas.
Bush: which means it has the potential -- a vast potential -- to dramatically cut our dependence on foreign oil.
HAL: Yes, by increasing our dependence on foreign gas.
HAL11000 4 years ago
you retard you can get hydrogen out of water!
And I don't think we'll ever become dependent on foreign water!
