Obviously very talented, but this sounds like a mix between country and elevator version? Boring compared to Hendrix. Great skills though, just puts me to sleep.
Yes, it is beautiful. But the jazz version of Purple Haze will be very different, it will be a Bossa Nova style with smooth jazz solo and without distortion. Anyway I'm just curious, you try it when you have time.
Superb! Don't know what else to say. I'm also interested in your arsenal of axes. The one you're playing here just sings but i bet there are other gems!! Superb, again!
Unfortunately the industry doesn't work like that... I wish everyday that people would realize what real music is so this could become mainstream again.
Thanks for the question! I have many instructional DVDs which might help, one of them specifically on this arangment. Please click on the link in "more info" to learn more. Thanks!
This guy is very good and I would love to play this song like him, but to say he is better than Jimi? First of all Jimi Hendrix didn't have the benefit of a Jimi Hendrix before him. Jimi was a pioneer and truly stretched the limits of what people were doing in those days. As far as any guitarist that came after jimi being better than him I say ...... a jet airliner today might be better than the Wright brother's plane, but you wouldn't have that jet without a Kitty Hawk before it.
I agree completely! Honestly, I don't think these guys meant it literally, I think it was more meant as a compliment to me, which is very nice to hear.
Well you deserve the compliment. The guitar seems like a very well spoken second language for you. I'd love to hear some more Hendrix renditions. I just recently fell in love with him all over again. Thanks for the video!!
@gjambro If you think that jimi was that great of a guitarist, you've obviously never heard any of the pioneering guitarists that came before jimi. Barney Kessel, Charlie Christian, Django Reinhardt, T-Bone Walker, Buddy Guy..the list goes on and on. Jimi just happened to be popular and reached an audience that had never heard anything as good so they assumed and still act like he is the god of modern guitar. Sorry but McLaughlin and bloomfield were both contemporaries of his and were WAY better
@gjambro I agree man!!! People always wanna throw guitar players... after Hendrix at me... but you can't overlook the great blues players, and people before Hendrix... Inspiration is vast and spreads for thousands of years... Since the dawn of humanity.
I love hendrix like I love my own mother but in my opinion you play it better than him......your playing blows me away my man, your my new hero.......
this guy is awesome but saying he plays it better than Jimi....doesn't seem right.
this is more about the improvisation while Jimi's live performance of this tune was about the tone and phrasing (its one of the few songs he didn't improvise on)
I don't really agree but I don't disagree...its just different...there's no reason to cause any animosity by saying such a thing. I guess it because this is more of a Jazz rendition (I love Jazz too).
Bravo! Taking a blues standard such as WCM and approaching it from a Jazz standpoint is so innovative. I'm at a loss for words but you have taken it down a road not yet traveled as far as I know which commands respect. Hats off!
wow, this was some awesome stuff, if you could, i would love to hear you play that giant guitar behind you (12 string maybe? the headstock is in the way so i can't count) great vid 5/5
That was really something special. Having heard that has changed my thinking of how to play The Wind Cries Mary now. Your an inspiration keep playing music my friend. 5 Stars & Subscribed
That's a great request! I remember back around 89', I listened to two records back to back, nonstop, In Step by SRV and Still Got The Blues by Gary Moore. I put these on a cassette tape and wore it out over a period of two years, very influential stuff! I'd love to do it but at the moment my "to upload" list is already longer than 100 tunes, so it might be a while... Thanks!
Jake, the life of a musician is just that, a life. One must enjoy it just as one enjoys a song; the beginning, middle, and end; the fast parts and slow, the harmonious and discordant. We are gifted, that is, given a gift: we can make music whenever we want. We play first because we love it! That others may, too, is a bonus.
That being said, it looks like your YT fans are an increasing number. Don't be jaded; you're a young man with many years of music ahead of you. My hope is that YOU keep enjoying it so that you keep doing it. It's obvious that thousands of others are enjoying it!
I would love to hear you do a stevie ray vaughan tune and emulate his solos in the fascinating and unique jazzy way you emulated hendrix's guitar solo on this tune.
My thought is that if you made an album of Hendrix, led zepplin, and other very famous guitar rock tunes in this exact style of solo guitar, you would probably sell a ton of records. I know I would buy one. How could you not buy one -- you favorite tunes played in such an interesting and fascinating way! You are blessed with something very special and unique.
Thank you! Unfortunately in today's music environment, my kind of stuff is not in demand. I'm glad here and there I can make someone like yourself happy, that's what I'm here for, but beyond that I don't have much hope. I have some energy for the music but zero energy for promotion and all the other BS. Thanks again, please make sure to subscribe, i should have plenty new videos soon.
Hey Jake, I know how frustrating the music bis. is. I played restaurants etc. with my son (violin)guitar (me)and a drum machine. The money is really next to nothin' but they feed you LOL Most restr; the music is the first thing they cut. The BIG music scene is a REAL joke. Jazz guys and the like are really having a rough time..Henceforth; MUSIC TEACHERS are born. What a shame that we've come to this point...KEEPON STRUMMIN......DALLAS had to VENT.
BTW, in my haste to rant about the state of music today I forgot to mention that I already have such a CD, it's called '16 Songs' and it's exactly that, acoustic guitar covers of great tunes by The Beatles, LZ, Steve Miller, etc. It's from 2000 and I barely sold enough to cover the expense... It's really a great CD, let me know if you'd like a copy at 15 bucks plus s&h. Thanks!!
Bro, I would get rid of the the beatles,lz and steve miller and put in hendrix, led zep and srv , play it on electric and then see what happens. This sounds as great as when I last heard it!
Thank you, that's a huge compliment. Personally, I think that nothing is better than the original, I just try to put a little spin on it as a solo guitarist but I'm certainly glad you're enjoying it.

wow, congratulations! You will do us, me specially, if maybe you give us some tips on how to study, or your way to aproach something you want to study. I sometimes have trouble with that... dont know a method of study or a way to see something. And I just start to play solos by ear of my favorite artists... but its too long and dificult just by ear! haha... Thanks bro
Thanks very much. The answer that I prefer is that I just have to continue to practice and improve until I'm good enough. The other types of answers, such as the state of the music industry today and the dire state of live gigs are of the type that would lead one to quit playing and for now I'd rather not do that... If you haven't done so yet, please subscribe. Thanks again!
Thanks, that's very kind. Hendrix's genius was in his inventivness and originality. The rest of us can just try to follow, possibly make some minor variations or alterations and hope that he'd approve.
Hi Chris, great videos as usual, thanks for sharing. That monster is a 9 string guitar. I designed it and had it built for me in 1992 by Bill Michaelis at Axtra guitars in Kenosha, WI. Despite being able to claim that I had this musical approach before many others, it's a bit of an empty claim, as I hardly did anything worthy with it, sticking primarily to the regular guitar. I recently restrung it and I'll try to practice and perhaps upload something, I'll keep you posted. Talk to you soon.
Such a great song, and you played it very well. Keep making these videos! The McCartney and Miles Davis ones are great too. I'll be viewing all of them.
This song seems like it was made for you man. Lots of room to move around and explore! Beautiful!

I really love the grooviness you added. Spiced up the song nicely. That steady bass... awesome. :-)

Thanks, that's very kind. Hendrix's genius was in his inventivness and originality. The rest of us can just try to follow, possibly make some minor variations or alterations and hope that he'd approve.

great job! question: do you perform on that monster behind and to the right of you? the one looks to have 10 or more strings?
xis333 3 years ago
