@philbailey2311 Yes, they were brilliant. I had the fortune that they were a local band when I was young and saw them perform this many times live. I always thought it was a shame that they did the "Glam rock" thing, but bills needed paying and the record industry knew how turn a buck.
To all those saying the original is better: 1) Originals are normally better 2) It's a hell of an original 3) Can you think of many people that could even attempt to cover a monster like this, let alone do so well?
@HengistTheGreat You are right there! It is impossible to beat the original of this, but this one is as good as anyone can produce it. The best cover of this "Monster", hands down. Yet another proof how brilliant Slade were
@MrKingkong1955 Maybe with this song Slade did not outperform the original, but with all the others, Slade outperformed the original by a street, including the 2 Beatles covers they did, Zappa, Marvin Gay, Neil Innes, Alvin Lea, Steppenwolf, Janis Joplin, Max Trooper, Amboy Dukes, Idle Race etc..
@marcusbewley1 They were the most diverse rockband that played an unequal amount of styles, with truly brilliant tunes, their "glam' image is just misleading.
@cripescate Nothing??? Well I would say it has a lot, but that s a matter of taste, maybe the only time Slade did not better the original, it is still almost equal, probably the best cover of this song IMHO.
Don't think it was TOTP's, more Radio 1's 'In Session Tonight' programme. It was probably as Ambrose Slade and ain't Dave Hill's backing vocals beautiful. In all, a perfect showcase for Jim's violin playing.
@colemanm1 I think cover versions should always have a different taste to the original, or we may as all listen to the seventies K-Tel albums that's if your as old as I.
