  • great stuff

  • Spec Richardson was a bad sport doing everything he could to win, fair and unfair. I don't think Woolf did anything wrong and deserved the victory no matter what. Seabiscuit ftw! :D

  • it seems that seabiscut's jockey grabbed the reins of ligaroti at the wire- the head of ligaroti stayed up -never really bobbed -was their a head on shot?- i guess they brawled down the stretch- it's been confirmed that hanky panky went on.

  • @larrywheels

Woolf did grab Ligaroti's halter and he admitted it right after the race. But he did it because the other jockey had been grabbing Seabiscuits blanket and he even hooked his leg over Woolf's to keep Seabiscuit from taken a complete lead.

Racing officials declared Seabiscuit the winner because they said that if the other jockey had not fouled Woolf, he would have won anyway.

  • @Marian12c Seabiscuit would have won anyway, Spec knew that and tried to make Ligaroti win, but cheated.

  • Whats also pretty cool about this race is that Ligaroti was jointly owned by Bing Crosby and Charles Howards's son, Lin. Ligaroti was also being trained at the time by Tom Smith's son Jimmy Smith. Talk about keeping it in the family!

  • i remember hearing about Jockys doing that where they would fight while riding. im glad they dont do that anymore. it seems soo stupid. well to me it dose. and without the fight this race was really good. a good show of champions.

  • he was fouled becasue he garbbed his saddlecloth and pulled, then grabbed wolfs crop arm.then he linked his leg around wolfs so that if he went forward he would get pulled off.then wolf yanked up up his birdle at the last second and won by a nose

  • Actually Ligaroti was owned by Bing Crosby and Lin Howard. Lin's father, Charles, owned Seabiscuit. Ligaroti was trained by Jimmy Smith, whose father, Tom, was Seabiscuit's trainer.

  • According to history, Ligarotti's owner was the son of Seabiscuit's trainer. He wanted to match them so that he could prove that his horse was better than his father's.

  • moral of this story the biscuit didnt mind if rode neck and neck but more than likely if you mess with the biscuit ya gonna get egg on your face! Seabiscuit an american legend! never to be forgotten!

  • I read about this in the book.

    Awesome!

  • cf!!!!

I've always wanted to see this!

  • Me 2, people forget about this race bacause of the other match w/ WA. According to the book by Hillenbrand the jockeys were really fighting, Wolfe reached over and pushed Ligaroti's head up right at the finish line. But Ligaroti's jockey started all the trouble when he grabbed Seabiscuit's saddle blanket.

  • Great race. I wish I could have seen Seabiscuit's races in real life.

  • I think he did that's because Ligaroti's jockey grabbed Seabiscuit's saddlecloth and pulled back hard when Biscuit lunged for the lead.

  • is this a movie version or the real video?

  • real version

  • Yes, there was an incredible sequence of events leading to the wire, with Woolf finally having to resort to "bush league" tactics to preserve the win, but only because Spec Richardson was firstly, incredibly, hanging onto Seabiscuit's saddlecloth to be pulled along in the stretch, and MUCH more! What a fantastic read it is; I won't spoil the complete tale by disclosing it any further for those who haven't yet read the book.

Thanks for adding your comments, I appreciate it.

  • I never heard of his opponent?? Did he have a

race record worthy of a match race? I'm glad

they don't have them anymore though, I don't

    think they prove much.

  • You never heard of him no doubt because there's no reference to him in the film. Ligaroti was indeed a very good horse, having posted impressive wins in Del Mar, Inglewood, and American Handicaps.

  • they weren't matched because of his record. ligoratti was owned by the son of seabiscuit's owner and his son wanted to show up his father in a match race.

  • Very nice video.. great footage of John Forsythe and Gregory Peck at the races..

  • I appreciate your comments. Please stop by anytime with your input.

  • Fantastic! The description of this race in the book is reaaly interesting.

  • Agreed; this video was fun and really showed off Seabiscuit's famous tenacity.

    Take care.

  • I've been reading Seabiscuit written by Laura Hillenbrand nowadays.(The movie was impressive!) Happy to see his real race video. Thank you :)
