I heard once in a sermon that it wasn't simply to test Abraham in asking him to offer his son, but rather it was a promise from God to Abraham that all that pain and torment he's going through in giving up his son, God will do the same thing when he gives his son, Jesus Christ, as a sacrifice for all. It hurts God and it pains him so much and this was God's way of telling Abraham and all of us, "this is how much i love you."

God told Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac. Did He really want Isaac to die? No! He was the son of promise, of blessing! But God didn't force him. Abraham had the choice to disobey. He didn't want to do it but he did anyway. Why? He trusted God would "provide Himself a lamb for a burnt offering" [Genesis 22:8] or even raise Isaac from the dead [Hebrews 11:17-19]. He trusted God, that's the point. God was testing Abraham to see if he really loved Him and put Him first.

This story demonstrates the literal level, of Abraham walking with God. There's another level, the spiritual one of God's provision. Abraham called the place "Jehovah-Jireh" = my Provider. God gives us everything we need! He always provides! Physical [food, clothes, shelter, car, gas, $], emotional and spiritual [Father, helper, friend, comforter, savior, deliverer, burden-bearer, etc]. There's a 3rd level, the type or foreshadowing of Jesus Christ's perfect sacrifice for us on the cross.

I'd just like to respond with this: Our good God never intended for Abraham to sacrifice Isaac. It was never His intention to let this sacrifice really happen. It was a test of Abraham's faith. After this, an angel told Abraham:

"Because you have done this thing and have not withheld your son,...I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heaven ans as the sand which is on the seashore. And so your descendants will possess the gates of their enemies."
