its good 2 see people interact with animals like that! i like cats but here they kill to many wild birds ...thats what i dont like about but i dont blame the cats i blame the owners! im from the netherlands.
In this film I'm feeding her thin slices of apple. I have other movies on my channel where she gets to eat mango peels (her favourite food!). I never feed the possums 'junk food' to ensure they stay healthy.
They eat fruit, nuts & fresh shoots from plants, and they really love rose buds which upsets many gardeners! Their jaws are quite weak so soft foods are their main diet.
AW I much prefer your opossums they seem nice and laid back, complete opposite to the nasty lil munchers we have here in NC. Ours here are pretty quick to fight with cats in our area and leave nasty wounds, if you walk out near one they hiss and snarl and it scares the crap out of me!
We have Possums in Australia, not Opossums, they're totally unrelated species.
We also have two types of possums - the Ringtail (seen here) and the Brushtail. Brushtails are a lot larger and the males in particular can be quite agressive and like your Opossums they'll fight with cats and leave nasty wounds, while the Ringtails don't stand a chance against a domestic cat or dog.
2 months have passed and Ella loves her 'special time' with the possum. Ella will sit by the back door once it gets dark and wait for her friend. If Ella is asleep I just need to say "Ella, Possum" and she'll be at the door waiting in under 5 seconds!
Both your ragdoll Ella and the momma Possum are addddddorabbbbble!
Keep up the good work of socializing the kitty.. it is always sad when a wild animal get killed by domestic, cars etc.. we should preserve wild life - not destroy it..
I hope your cat is vaccinated/dewormed. As cat owners we can agree they are too curious sometimes. -_- Oh, by the way, where do you live? We don't have possum in
Ella has all her vaccinations, etc and is regularly checked for any 'nasties'. Ella isn't allowed to roam outside unsupervised either.
I'm in Australia, the ringtail possum seen in the film is one of our native marsupials (mammal with a pouch for her babies). She is fully grown and probably 3yrs old - I've been her friend for over 18 months :-)
Ella had another meeting with the possume tonight - we'd been sitting outside for 60 minutes in the cold and dark waiting... I went to get a drink and when I came back the possum was in her feeding spot and Ella was sitting quietly on the raised garden about 2 metres away. Ella was well behaved the whole feeding, it was only when the possum disappeared over the fence that she made an effort to follow her.
That's very nice video, cute cat and cute ringtail possum. First time I see a possum actually 'crawl' down a wooden fence and walking on it. I am trying to find out more about their movements because I am getting one eating my strawberries and plums in the night. Dont like that but they are really cute. What a dilemma!
well, that's very cool. i have never seen a possum. are they usually friendly animals like that? is your idea to have them eventually meet or what? is there a history of cats liking possums? nice video quality BTW - looks professional!
Ringtail possums are usually timid. This one has been my friend for 18 months and comes running to her feeding spot as soon as she sees me :-) She has some babies in her pouch at the moment and lets me have a good close look with no problems.
Unfortunately the possums are often killed by household pets (cats and dogs) however if your pet is taught not to attack then they can become good friends too. I'm hoping Ella will learn to 'look, but don't touch!".
Well done, there are none at my place, but I intend to set up possum boxes so hopefully they turn up. I will have to get my 4 jet block Poms to except them.
That is amazing! What are you feeding the possum? She certainly is tame. Are these animals considered a nuisance - like raccoons here in North America? And finally, what kind of tree is that?
In this movie she's being feed some apple, she also loves mango peels and peaches especially when coated with some crushed nuts. I don't feed her every night as she needs to keep her regular diet of leaves and other goodies from the trees - she often goes 2-3 weeks without my treats.
The ringtail possum is timid by nature, but can be easily befriended with the right methods. Many people don't like possums as they eat things from their garden (roses are a favourite).
BTW, the 'tree' she's in is a grape vine that's lost most of its leaves due to a mixture of possums eating the fresh shoots and powerdery mildew that meant I had to remove the old big leaves in an attempt to control the problem and save the plant.
