Love the idea! I'm actually building a vehicle myself that runs on compressed air. However, the tank and pump will be on-board. Check out my blog, post your comments and ideas as I progress through the build!
You should break into the mobility chair industry and market it to the elderly. They can just jack it into their oxygen bottles, talk about 0 emmisions, pure O2....lmao Cool gadget, needs a little more balls though.
Would be nice to be able to add a tank somehow to it. Shouldn't be too hard, although may need to be a huge one for any further than around the corner depending on engine and hoses. Any pedals just in case?
I think you were lucky that you gave up before it killed you. The head tube joint would have failed if you had achieved any speed, at all, over a bump. Very elegant framework but ultimately weak in frame design geometry.
Maybe you could use a small argon or oxygen bottle regulated down with welding regulators? It would be pretty safe if you protected the valves with a guard, and would go pretty far if it was a small bottle, like for a wire feed possibly.
steam cars fun the crankshaft on the axle. in a steam engine (and a compressed air engine) there should be no gearing from the engine to the wheels. simply because compressed air (and steam) have enough torque to push the wheels directly
@666elcam no. but usually (if you run enough psi through) you can just link it directly to the axle without a transmission. that's how all the steam cars were built. if that's not the case, then i can come to the conclusion you weren't using a very large psi for your vehicle, were you?
@MrNotch9 when the regulator was fully open it would have a steady 90psi but this motor is so inefficient it's a major CFM hog. it makes the same amount of power with the reg half open vs fully open.
@MrNotch9 i probably had 90psi feeding it, but the motor is very inefficient and only makes power on the down stroke, thus 32:1 gearing was needed to spin a 26" tall wheel.
hey bro try to use co2 (I think?) the that they use on soda machine its a compress air just dont know how long you gonna use it.. anyway save a plastic balloon might help :)
This is really cool! You can try to bring this invention to the market through an open enterprise. To see an example of an open enterprise search "SENSORICA"
Search more on the open enterprise by searching "Discovery Network - Multitude Innovation"
I'll agree that this seems very inefficient and not very elegant... but that's the whole point of experimentation! Look at the Wright Flyer and other early planes... and where the technology has gone. I think, if it's fun, it's worth doing.
If you learn something in the process... even better!
@spacerconrad It was definitely an experiment and definitely fun. I now have it hanging on the wall of my shop, probably never to move again... but it makes a really good conversation piece!
hey how did u make ur frame...im in a group project at penn state and we are trying to make a compressed air tricycle but need help finding a frame how did u make yours
@moneyshot41 the part under my feet is 3/4" box tubing welded like a ladder, everything else is just junk bicycle parts. the neck and front fork are just from a 10-speed , the right rear wheel is just a bicycle fork and it's brake, the left rear is using the engine and gear box as structure and the wheel is attached directly to the gearbox. everything was made in the quickest way possible.
@cambigfoot88 and a compressor that doesnt use electricity and make it fast enough for a point, and make it last long enough for use and WAIT, FORGET THIS IDEA!

That hose from the compressor limits its range a bit.

WOW, its fast!
slurp812 4 months ago 2
you should make a boiler and run that engine on steam, it still beat having to ride it around the house with a hoose coming out of the back
bazengao 4 months ago
I wonder if a scuba tank could be used to power it and do away with the hose?

Cool! Get a longer hose & next time you can make the trip to your neighbor’s driveway! Easy on the accelerator there! I like what you did, really....
