FlankerTanker, Everclear is 190 proof grain alcohol (if you can get it). 151 rum works fine too. Wikipedia has a good description of it. I have heard there is something similar in the UK which is some kind of medical alcohol.

truckpipe, thanks. The video was getting too long so I edited out an important point which I'm sure most pipesmokers know ... and that's cleaning the pipe rim. It is easily cleaned by rubbing with saliva on a soft cotton rag or cloth. The best time to do it is when the pipe is warm after smoking... but it can be done anytime. Even really thick carbon on the rim will come off with a good soaking in saliva and enough rubbing.
