True, we are getting it for free, but that doesn't necessarily, IMO of course, mean that advertising should go nuts - I mean, banner ads and the ads that pop up that you can close should be enough, IMO - as it is advertising does tend to go out of control, which is more directly experienced with the internet than watching it on TV.

Why did people worry about Y2K? I was to young at the time. But people thought computers could somehow precive time in a way that it would make it think it didn't exist. And thats just really stupid.

The reason why they worried about it was a mix of reasons. First there were worries of data conflicts since at the time they stored all information by year date, and only the last two numbers of the year. like 84 would be 1984 so when 2000 hits it could have reset any stored data. Also computers are really sensitive machines, and data conflicts like what could have happened might have shut down workstations and servers.

People made lots of money scaring people with the idea that Y2K would cause major problems. Many fears were easy to disprove. By the late 90's credit cards had expiration dates of 2000 and later. Obviously bank computers could handle the change. You could set your PC's date and time to 12/31/99 at 11:55 pm, wait 5 minutes, and see if your own computer stopped. A lot of people got taken advantage of due to their own fears.

Also, 01/01/2001 started the new millennium. There was never a year zero.
