I have been to a couple different detailing classes and have been buffing cars for 10 years now and I've found that people learn two different ways on how to buff, some people tell ya to buff with high rpm and others say stay at 5-6, but i like the lower speed, that way you can just let the machine, and the compound do the work at a safe pace.like polishing you wanna let the polish do the work

I have a question! *raises hand* I recently painted the hood on my car and it came out pretty ok. However, if you get close to the car, you can see the paint strokes on the hood. I wanted to know if buffing the hood would give it a more smooth and even appearance?

@ParadiseofTruth if the paint strokes are in the paint and not the clear coat then no, if the storkes are in the clear coat then you would have to use a cutting compound depending on how bad the strokes are. Never use a brush to paint a car though you can rent you an air compressor for about $50-$100.

amateurs should not operate high speed buffers. i would suggest the same products (3M rules) and using a porter cable DA buffer (orbital) with foam pads (orange-heavy/compound, blue-medium/polish and white-light/wax). you wont burn the paint and you wont end up with buffer marks that will need to be polished out with an orbital.

I like using air buffers. They are slower, usualy about 1500 RPM but alot less chance of burning through, even on edges.

Thanks for the vid. People need to realize the buffer has to stay parallel to the surface like you said. The tape trick is old but works very well and prevents lots of extra work when trying to clean up the gaps with leftover polish/wax residue.
