@iconindy you might be the only American in the whole university...hahaha. how comes so many americans have heard of St Andrews? I mean its always near the top of our university league tables but it doesnt do well on the Global league tables (different criteria) and i would have assumed thats all americans would see to judge st andrews' reputation???
@FadeToBlack888 I'm probably also the only American who has ever heard of it. I like what I've seen so far, mostly that the physics program is so exemplary.
@IndieeHippo very tame for a student from a big british city where you can drink and go clubbing at 18, but the opposite for americans i think who are relieved to be able to drink legally. its good fun :) only one club but lots of house parties if you have a lot of friends. just about everyone in st andrews is american!
i really really really hope i get accepted there.. its my dream college. i dont even care that i live in the us. i went there a few years ago and i was in love <3
@drumfanatic4 dont forget over 10 million americans have scottish roots, as do i, i was born in scotland and was moved to the states with my folks when i was 4, the rest of our family stayed back in scotland, ive been back every year since i was 5, im 35 now, i still consider myself scottish first and american second, especially seeing my folks accent is as thick as the day we left. i have a little bit of an accent but with a huge american twang, so i get the piss taken outta me when i go back
In 1997, I traveled to Scotland for the second time. I had discovered St-Andrews in 1974. I had promised to return. This time, I took my time. It was the month of August. I've lived in this town for 6 years and it's a shithole - it might be old and beautiful but all the people are the same and after a week you'll have seen and done everything the town has to offer
Okay, I really want to go to St. Andrews University after seeing this video! This place is gorgeous and I love Scotland anyway, so why not go there? :)
I received an offer from St. Andrew's today, having applied to both British and American schools. I'm still not quite sure what my choice will be, but Fife looks great!
Loved the video and the memories - I started in1978 there when the Music Department existed.
Small point that St Andews is not a city. It's a town. There are just 6 cities in Scotland: Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Dundee, Inverness and Stirling. Fact.
Listen guys, if you manage to get in to St Andrews (never mind graduate) you are pretty much guaranteed a job when you leave. It's one of the best universities in the world.
To you Americans, it's not like Yale though, you still get your undergraduate for free with possible funding for the masters for scottish people. I think this is also open to outside students on a limited basis.
Thanks so much for this video! I'm also moving to this gorgeous place in less than 3 weeks. I also love that you chose Sigur Ros (my favourite band!) as background music.
Thanks for this video, i'm an italian guy and forgive if my english is bad, i've been there something like 8 years ago and i still remember how it was... peaceful, i was 12 and the first thing i said to my mom when i arrived was something like 'Everything seems coming from a fable'...
I'm gettin unconditional offer at St-Andrews for masters...But hv heard a lot of demotivating stuff from ppl...dat we do not get part-time jobs,no placements aftr degree, job prospects r negligible,no suitable student accomodation available...nd so on...
Anyone havin any idea please help....will i b able to get part-time job?nd gud private aacomodation?PLEASE HELP.SUGGESTIONS WELCOME!
There's nowhere like St Andrews. I wasn't always happy when I lived there, but once St Andrews gets her claws into you, you don't forget her! A wonderful place.

Just Graduated, spent last half a decade there doing Spanish- anyone else doing that you should know, the Spanish dept are AMAZING. They really are just incomparable.
Dont know how the harbour can smell like fish when it is commercially used for lobsters, Sounds a bit like you were mocking a beautiful place that you know nothing or very little about!
i moved to France 5 years ago from Balmullo, St andrews has always been my favourite place to visit. I truly miss it, i never thought i would, and seeing it again makes the homesickness worse, but it is wonderful to see so many familiar places.
I never thought it possible for homesickness to hurt so much.
I hate this town where i live, its full of snobby students, and the only place tht has a lot of ppl in it is the council estate all the nice houses are holiday home, times shares, STUDENT RESIDENCES etc... Even the golf is shite, they encourage so many youngsters to play, the ones who dont need encouragement are pushed aside.
Come along now people lets be realistic. St.Andrews is a nice wee town (I know officially a city) that is beautiful in some respects but is also very fucking boring. To further tarnish an otherwise great place it is full of posh student twats with more money than sense.Thanks.xxx
cheers very much for the video; really took me back. i used to be a student as st. andy's, and was also a divine at st. mary's. have since been in america. didn't realize how much i missed the old place.
iv got an offer 4 st andrews nxt yr, but, ironically, by the video it doesnt look like there is that much Life in St Andrews. can any1 tel me different?
A video can't do justice, you have to see it for yourself! The residences are great, and in first year (as I am now) everyone is in the same boat. You make lots of friends, and it's not that hard, because there's so many other new people around. When you go into town, you always meet someone you know. I'm glad I came here, would recommened it to any prospective student - although I highly recommend attending open days at all the possible choices so you can see them for yourself.
I'm a local and I can guarentee that it is a great place to study and to live in. It's a small town but utterly brilliant...there's lots to do here and its only a short distance from edinburgh. Don't turn down the opportunity to come here as a student unless you have a MUCH BETTER offer
I can tell you different.....St. Andrews is a wonderful town to live in and go to school in. I went to school in Scotland in 2001 and loved every second of every day there. Mind you I went to university in Dundee (30 mins away) but lived in St. Andrews and would not change that experience for any in the world.
GO! GO! You will thank yourself for making the best decision in the world.
hi ! I want to go to ST Andrews uni. can anyone tell me what the uni is like and what the dorms are like, describe the living conditions how far away are they from the uni itself. thanks x also ! is it hard making friends at uni, do most people know each other already or is everyone strangers at first ???
hey im in 1st year, the uni is great! maybe if u like clubbing alot its not for you though because there are no clubs! the halls of residence are great, the closest to the centre are 1 min , the furthest are about 20 mins
Don't forget Americans, myself included (prospectively, since I've not arrived yet). Seriously, though, how would you characterize the theo program at St Andy's?
i have lived in St. Andrews my whole life. everyone knows almost everyone. wouldnt want to live anywhere else. Doesn't seem as special though as apposed to visitors as this is what i have knwon my whooe life! x
Lol, Ive lived in St Andrews for 10 years (I now study in Edinburgh which in my opinion is a million times better) and Ive never seen it look so good. :) Not too sure about the 'city' of St Andrews pretty sure it's more of a town, that is unless of course your going with the old Cathedral city argument. ^^
I'm thinking of studying in St. Andrews next year, but a lot of ppl say there's not much to do there. I love the sea and how old the town is.. but are there any good pubs you can hang out on friday nights? I don't care about night clubs.
There are some good pubs in St. Andrews. St. Andrews may not be the best place for nightlife (though Dundee isn't too far away), but there are a number of aspects of St. Andrews life that can compensate for this.
Great Video, well done! I love the music it's perfect for this video. I have a good friend who lives in St.Andrews and this is the first time I have seen his beautiful city. Thank you for sharing!
The accommodation that I was in at the time this video was posted was a house letted from MDDC with a couple of other students. The house was superb and MDDC were very helpful. The rent was also fairly reasonable when compared to other places in town.
Thankyou so much for posting this video - was a student between 83 and 87, now live in London, and just to see the sea and the tranquility takes me back. Thanks for the castle sands too - many a midnight dip I took there - surprised I'm still alive it was so cold
i love st.andrews it's like an oasis between places like tayport, leuchars. its an amazing town with almost everything you really need in it, except from a real job instead of places like tesco LOL. Bloody tourists, well i like to give 'em diretcions "where's the bus station sir?"
"oh just follow a bus and you'll be there in no time here's my number incase you get lost"
Its not a question of daring, you will simply criticise where i stay so i wont give you that chance, all you need to know is that im not that far away from the "miserable grey toon" nuff said
Obviously unlike yourself, who has very little repect for others, I don't tend to criticise where people stay or other towns/cities, as that is home to may people with great memories. I have travelled the world and seen many places, I am very proud that this is my 'home', however much of a "shithole" you think it is. Simple solution.....don't go there, you won't be missed!
i can think of nothing worse than studying theology... oh, yes i can studying it at St Andrews , no amount of history or tradition can excuse this town being a TOTAL SHITHOLE . the locals are miserable fuckers and the old course is a complete craphole
This was obviously a student video from the start, with comments such as, 'beat up castle' and 'busted Cathedral' no mention of the superb history surrounding it. to those who produeced this video. you have no heart, no soul, and will never belong to the fine Town/City that is St.Andrews.
, just so that it can become a resort and a home to people who have no ambition to live in the town only to boast they lived in St.Andrews, the home of golf........
Born, raised, lived and worked in St.Andrews, Gorgeous place. Students, tourist holiday accomodation forcing us LOCALS to move out of the town, high council tax(not if you are a Student) School closures. 'WE' locals or EX-locals can only sit back and watch the demise of what once was a thriving community, families dating back mamy many years...some hundreds of years. St.Andrews has lost it's soul........
...it's not like the university or golf course snuck up on you, is it? without the students and (as much as i hate to admit it) the tourists, st andrews would be just another dying or dead scottish town. do you think students like paying high rents? hardly. stop your bitching and accept st andrews for what it is, and, more importantly, always has been. for heaven's sake, the university of st andrews: founded 1413; absurdly irate locals a day later.
i agree... one can never get enough of the sea... it looks like a great place... i loved the knitting part... funny... the last part scared me... very unexpected...
I've lived here since day of birth! I find the place dull & over-rated! Most of the students that come here are rejects from Oxford & Cambrigde! The place gets run over with bloody tourists that just jam-pack the town!
It would be great if you could come up to visit again sometime this semester.
Unfortunately, the video just don't capture how beautiful the panaroma was when we were there. The West Sands at sunset is one of my favourite places in St. Andrews.
hopefully i'll get in!! sending my application today :)

iv got an offer 4 st andrews nxt yr, but, ironically, by the video it doesnt look like there is that much Life in St Andrews. can any1 tel me different?

A video can't do justice, you have to see it for yourself! The residences are great, and in first year (as I am now) everyone is in the same boat. You make lots of friends, and it's not that hard, because there's so many other new people around. When you go into town, you always meet someone you know. I'm glad I came here, would recommened it to any prospective student - although I highly recommend attending open days at all the possible choices so you can see them for yourself.

I'm a local and I can guarentee that it is a great place to study and to live in. It's a small town but utterly brilliant...there's lots to do here and its only a short distance from edinburgh. Don't turn down the opportunity to come here as a student unless you have a MUCH BETTER offer
dodbell 3 years ago
I went to school there for one semester, and I wish I would have gone all four years. It is amazing. Take the offer!

Don't get me wrong-it's a great place, steeeped in history and tradition, not to mention the golf!!
It has the ruins of a great cathedral and a castle. Two beautiful beaches also. Property prices are sky high though.

Enjoyed the video. To the OP, I'm headed your direction. What should I know about the theology program? What's social life like for postgrads?

hi ! I want to go to ST Andrews uni. can anyone tell me what the uni is like and what the dorms are like, describe the living conditions how far away are they from the uni itself. thanks x also ! is it hard making friends at uni, do most people know each other already or is everyone strangers at first ???
Poisongutterflower 3 years ago
hey im in 1st year, the uni is great! maybe if u like clubbing alot its not for you though because there are no clubs! the halls of residence are great, the closest to the centre are 1 min , the furthest are about 20 mins

I studied theology at St.Mary's and was glad to get back to Dundee and reality.
St.Andrews is full of Fifers and English paunces!

Don't forget Americans, myself included (prospectively, since I've not arrived yet). Seriously, though, how would you characterize the theo program at St Andy's?
jawday12345 3 years ago
i have lived in St. Andrews my whole life. everyone knows almost everyone. wouldnt want to live anywhere else. Doesn't seem as special though as apposed to visitors as this is what i have knwon my whooe life! x

I've lived in St. Andrews all my life. I love the west sands at night, magic. Also, you lived in the street I live in :P

Finlarig 4 years ago
I'd move there in a heartbeat......a mystical, magical and amazing place...spirits abound... it's incredible...!

Heck...i wish they would reply to my application...St. Andrews is my top choice...but i doubt they'll take me.
Anyways, nice video...it gives me a much better picture of where i'm planning on going.

I'm thinking of studying in St. Andrews next year, but a lot of ppl say there's not much to do there. I love the sea and how old the town is.. but are there any good pubs you can hang out on friday nights? I don't care about night clubs.
shypsena 4 years ago
There are some good pubs in St. Andrews. St. Andrews may not be the best place for nightlife (though Dundee isn't too far away), but there are a number of aspects of St. Andrews life that can compensate for this.

Amazing video, hopefully I'm studying at St Andrews next year, what accommodation are you in and would you recommend it?
BenMM 4 years ago

1 hour later
*phone rings*
"hello umm im in glasgow and my feet hurt"
haha sorry i thought that was funny lol.

Its not a question of daring, you will simply criticise where i stay so i wont give you that chance, all you need to know is that im not that far away from the "miserable grey toon" nuff said
morry27 4 years ago
Obviously unlike yourself, who has very little repect for others, I don't tend to criticise where people stay or other towns/cities, as that is home to may people with great memories. I have travelled the world and seen many places, I am very proud that this is my 'home', however much of a "shithole" you think it is. Simple solution.....don't go there, you won't be missed!
speighty8 4 years ago
i can think of nothing worse than studying theology... oh, yes i can studying it at St Andrews , no amount of history or tradition can excuse this town being a TOTAL SHITHOLE . the locals are miserable fuckers and the old course is a complete craphole
morry27 4 years ago
your comments are noted. Where be your place of birth and upbringing? If you dare to answer?
speighty8 4 years ago
This was obviously a student video from the start, with comments such as, 'beat up castle' and 'busted Cathedral' no mention of the superb history surrounding it. to those who produeced this video. you have no heart, no soul, and will never belong to the fine Town/City that is St.Andrews.
speighty8 4 years ago
I grew up in St Andrews and although I don't live there anymore it is special and always will be.
mediadisbeliever 4 years ago
, just so that it can become a resort and a home to people who have no ambition to live in the town only to boast they lived in St.Andrews, the home of golf........
speighty8 4 years ago
Born, raised, lived and worked in St.Andrews, Gorgeous place. Students, tourist holiday accomodation forcing us LOCALS to move out of the town, high council tax(not if you are a Student) School closures. 'WE' locals or EX-locals can only sit back and watch the demise of what once was a thriving community, families dating back mamy many years...some hundreds of years. St.Andrews has lost it's soul........
speighty8 4 years ago
...it's not like the university or golf course snuck up on you, is it? without the students and (as much as i hate to admit it) the tourists, st andrews would be just another dying or dead scottish town. do you think students like paying high rents? hardly. stop your bitching and accept st andrews for what it is, and, more importantly, always has been. for heaven's sake, the university of st andrews: founded 1413; absurdly irate locals a day later.

I've lived here since day of birth! I find the place dull & over-rated! Most of the students that come here are rejects from Oxford & Cambrigde! The place gets run over with bloody tourists that just jam-pack the town!

St. Andrews is not a city. I live here and I would know.
pes4rules11 4 years ago
pes4rules11...it is known as a city for its Cathedral. I was educated and grew up in St Andrews and went to Langlands, then Kilrymont school.
mediadisbeliever 4 years ago
yep fact, I was born, grew up in St.A's, primary school and Madras, St.Andrews has always been known as a City due to it's Cathedral.

It would be great if you could come up to visit again sometime this semester.
Unfortunately, the video just don't capture how beautiful the panaroma was when we were there. The West Sands at sunset is one of my favourite places in St. Andrews.
