Meads was NZ player of the century (the most successful rugby nation). Meads is the first name picked in almost every 'Greatest Ever XV' when picked by experts from any country. Meads is the quintessential All Black forward....and was playing in the 50's and 60's in a way that even modern locks would envy.
To consider Johnson or Eales in the same league is a joke. They are modern player...will they be so highly regarded in 40 years time...like Meads still is.

Most Kiwis know their rugby. I'm no exception. Martin had no right taking on the top job with no experience and he knows it. He should have started at club level like everyone else. The question is how long are you willing to suffer defeats while Martin gets his on-the-job training? Take my advise - get yourself a Kiwi coach. If it's good enough for the Aussies it's certainly good enough for you lot.

Martin Johnson - I thought your first act as coach was to teach your players how to act off the field before telling them what to do on it. What have we seen so far? Tindall done for drink-driving, Vainikolo done for GBH and now Matt Stevens done for cocaine. Feel free to throw in the towel anytime. I'm sure there's a kiwi available to take your place.

also, it's not unreasonable for a coach to want his contract to start at the beginning of the season. an end of season tour is an odd place to begin.

Meads was NZ player of the century (the most successful rugby nation). Meads is the first name picked in almost every 'Greatest Ever XV' when picked by experts from any country. Meads is the quintessential All Black forward....and was playing in the 50's and 60's in a way that even modern locks would envy.
To consider Johnson or Eales in the same league is a joke. They are modern player...will they be so highly regarded in 40 years time...like Meads still is.

Also, did you know Meads coached Johnson in the eighties, and in the great mans own words during a 2005 interview on the NZ rugby channel, called Johnson a true legend of the game, a compliment indeed. Meads quoted "The worse piece of advice I ever gave any player was to Martin, I told him he needed to be more aggresive"....He took that on board! Meads was Johnsons greatest influence, and they remain great friends to this day.

I've met him loads of times, he is smart, very intelligent and funny - a true gent in every sense of the word. Oh and yes I'm Irish and Irishgal93 I'm have to tell you this - unlike Johnno you are clearly not intelligent at all. If you've got nothing good to say about someone who has done wonders for the great sport of rugby union - then don't say anything at all. You have never met him, spoke to him or read his brilliant biography, have a bit of respect.

As a rugby man, I CANNOT disagree with you about Meads, any man who plays 130 or so times for his country is a legend. But I would not say Eales and Johnson were jokes in comparison, that is like saying every other 2nd row was a joke. I dont thing McBride and Du Priz were a joke, in fact Fric Du Priz would be alongside Meads in any world xv. Trivia, I know, but did you know Johnson wore the All Black shirt.

Agree with you about Du Priz from what I've read. I think modern players are slightly overrated because they are in recent memory. Eales and Johnson are great players, but there were other greats from the 70s,80s and 90s that we tend to forget about.Yep I know Johnson was picked for the NZ Colts. He played for King Country as a 19 and 20 year old. King Country is Mead's province.Meads is a farmer.Growing up in NZ he used to do TV ads for tanalised fenceposts. There is a video of meads on Youtube

Martin is the best rugby player to walk this Earth! Wilkinson didn't win us the World Cup in 2003 for us, Johnson did! He is the most influencial player in World Rugby! He demanded respect form everyone, player or supporter. You didn't have to like him, but you had to respect him for what he achieved in the greatest game in the world!
