  • thanks for sharing

  • going to try this but how do you seal them ?

    thanks

  • I've been making hypertufa containers for years and they don't need to be sealed to hold up to my zone 5 winters with lots of snow. The ratio of the mix is what makes it sturdy. I prefer a mix of , 2 Parts Portland Cement, 2 Parts Perlite, 1½ Parts Peat Moss, 1½ Parts All-Purpose Sand (not play sand). They are a little heavier than standard, but hold up great to the elements.

  • Does a hypertufta pot hold up in the cold or does it crack in the cold like Terra Cotta does?

  • @norb1937 it should hold up once they are sealed.

  • @GardenGuy06 What do they use to seal the hypertufta? I made several concrete flower pots a few years ago. I have them on my patio with plants in them. The cold does not crack them like the terra cota.

  • Is there an advantage over plastic pots?

  • ADVICE: mix the pete/pearlite/cement first.... USE A ROUND CONTAINER (empty 5 gallon bucket is good) put just a little water in the bucket FIRST, and add the dry mix to the water. It is ALWAYS BETTER to add dry mix to water.. if you add too much water, and have no more dry to work with.. you're screwed..

  • thanks for the advice. Donna and her family do these as a business. The last time we saw her they had made over 900 in one batch. (I wouldn't have had the patience to do that many!)

  • what's the ratio of the ingredients please?
