horrific? i once saw o biker ran over by a track on a highway, one of the biker's legs hitted the windshield of the car in front of me, and in an other occasion they had to remove the biker's (no helmet) brain form the pavement with a spoon!

the first man that "decided to save some minutes" actually braked but the road was slippery so he accelerated. I would ran a red light too in this case.
