I had the great pleasure of hearing Bonisolli as Manrico at the Met in 1990. The cast that night included Sharon Sweet, Shirley Verrett, and Lajos Miller. They all might as well have stayed home. Nobody cared that he patrolled the footlights, bare chested, with his swirling cape, gold chains, and primo tenore ego. He sang like a god and was positively electrifying.

To say that this is a vulgar voice do not know tenors!! Verdi was know to dislike tenors and this is one aria that I am sure he must have thought 'take this, if you can sing it'. Opera singers are vocalists but also actors. He was not singing on the Met stage but to an informal gathering.

The two tenors that nailed this were both Franco, Bonisolli and Corelli. To hear what they did to the last high C, nailed it. Verdi if he could hear what they did with this piece would probably say "Finally".

Hai mai visto cosa ha combinato l'unica volta che ha sbagliato il "DO" sul palco in questo pezzo? Ha spaccato la spada che aveva in mano ed è uscito di scena furioso; poi è tornato indietro e ha rifatto solo quel dannato "DO" in maniera magistrale sturando i timpani persino a quelli nel loggione xD.

The Only Tenor i know that regularly sang back to back encores of 'Di Quella Pira" complete with all 6 High C's. Bonisolli was 2nd to none... why he was over -shadowed by the other Franco i'll never know nor will any one else. Maybe because of his crazy antic's he wasn't taken seriously but He had the voice of a roaring lion and never backed off anything. Bravo Franco R.I.P

I fuckin' Love it!!! He's havin' fun:) Other tenors are just too damn serious! And...they can't even come close to what he did! & Does it all the time! Many tenors who are more famous and respected than he is transpose this! And to do it twice many times? There's only 1 Bonisolli:) I've got a "live" CD of a concert he did in Barcelona in the late 70's(I think)& the repertoire he sang that evening, Corelli, Pavarotti, Kraus, Domingo, Carreras, the list can go on, they'd never dare attempt it! WOW
