@kingpeople because in this time frame men having relationships with young boys was the norm and expected. So beauty was a mans body, with a young boys penis and bum, also with out chest hair was good.
@Bokan995 The style of the Statue was inspired by the ancient Greeks and the artist was an Italian so the whole piece is Western.
In its own context it was supposed to represent the David like city of Florence standing up to the Goliath like Papal Rome.
If it was a statue of an actual middle eastern Jew made by a Jew then there would be no statue because Jews are forbidden from making images of humans and the racial characteristics, as well as the Greco-Roman style would be different.
I got to see it a year ago. We were aloud to look at it but no photography which was fine with me since outside there is a copy where you are free to take a picture of
I was here in March 2010. They let us all bring our cameras in, but they were really strict about taking photos/videos. The key is to not get caught. One guy in our group almost got throw out because he doesn't listen or read the "no photography" signs. I managed to get a quick video clip and a picture of David's rear end.
Wow! He is beautiful! He is so wonderful, and a masterpiece. He is so handsome to the world. Even to a world centuries after his time. Simply stunning. His hands seem so big in proportion to his body. Still the coolest statue in my book.
The rules keep changing everywhere as to both stills and video. The video of David I took was in 1994. When last in Florence, 2001, I was informed that cameras had been banned.
So that ban may still be enforced against you, or the rules could have changed again. I have sent e-mail to museums asking about their policies on cameras in advance to avoid false expectations. That's my best suggestion.
@intrepberkexplorer I was in florence in december and they are indeed banned, strictly. i actually got yelled at just for taking my lens cap off... so don't bother brining one.
Hi there :) I was there this past may and cameras are allowed, however, photography isn't. I managed to position myself in a manner that allowed me to take a couple shots. Just be mindful of the people working there, and you should be ok!
