one of my Degus just died this morning and took the other one to the vet and he seem to be doin much better . just wish i knew what happen to them .. :( but they are the most sweetest rodents ever and they love to cuddle .

these hairy little critters are so cute.  I would love some but have got a cat (10) a bunny (7) and puppy (9 months). My other half says we have enough. Maybe one day though. i will need to research them though. Is it true that they like to live in groups?

@shesastar100 I have degus and i have 3 cats 1,2 and 10. a dog 12 year old. I keep them in my bedroom and just lock my other animals out of there when i am not in the room

I started with 3, one killed the other, they had 3 babies, the mother killed one of the babies, then the kids had 4, and 2 more were born this morning. All together, I have 10 now.

@petagriffin you can give them sugar free yoghert drops you buy from a pet shop. also chinchila sticks since like degus, chinchillas are also prone to getting diabetic and can't have sugar of any form so if its fit for a chinchilla it's probably ok for a degu. ask the shop assistant if you're unsure though.

@PetaGriffn they cannot ahve anythign with sugar at all, even sweet fruit can be too much- give them fresh greens like dandelion, turnip, kale in small bits- they love that!

Rats are Rodentia Rattus - Degus are Caviomorpha. Rats gestate over 22 days Degus over 90 days. Rats like all rodents are born Pink/without fur and require 3-5 weeks to be weaned and become sexualy mature. Degus are born fully fury and require 5-7 weeks to become weaned and 6-12 months to become sexually mature. Lactating female Degus will adopt orphaned pups and males will assist with care! Rats will eat orphaned pups. Males will eat their own pups.

Adendum... Degu females only come into heat in early summer for 3 weeks. Only if it is light for 12 hours. They only come into heat outside this for 4 days after pups are born and 4 days after weening dad should be seperated for this period but still be able to make contact through bars/wire. The Post Natal osteris increases mothers temp by 4C and is believed to be a response to keep newborn pups warm, this produces a significant strain on mums body as almost everything she consumes becomes milk

Degus need alot of toy, I suggest you have two sets for them, thewy also need timothy hay because it's the only one they can eat. and they will chew anything but they arn't suposed to eat things with suger or fat in them.

Get at least 2 or 3. They're normally ridiculously cheap. I bought 2 in a mall for 7 bucks each. Fairly easy to take care of. Make sure you do your research on them. Go to wikipedia and search for Degus. =)

yeah- degus can bite- and it hurts! hamsters & gerbils can be biters too- pet rats that you get at a young age are really the best small animals pets- degus can be trainedas well but it takes alittle more patience
