  • Id like to here the old christain song"I'll Be a Sunbeam" wiki facts

  • This song was written by a band called the Vaselines. They're from Edinburgh Scottland and they're very punk rock.

  • I never really got the whole "grunge" thing. Its not like the bands the whole "grunge" idea revolved around were even doing anything different then they and many others had been doing for years.

I am pretty sure it was just one big marketing campaign. A new section for the music stores. Labelled "alternative". That always made me smile.

But it also brought in the teenyboppers to a few scenes that could have done without them and the money grubbing and floor nazis that followed sucked.

  • @Jookkor it was, mtv created it. It was just what used to be underground.

  • @Jookkor No, you're definitely right about that. Grunge was a term invented by record execs to help market a certain type of sound. But, let's be honest...

Pearl Jam was called "Grunge". AIC were called "Grunge". Nirvana. Mudhoney. Melvins.

Do those bands sound ANYTHING alike? Maybe a little bit, but...man. Pearl Jam and Melvins are the same genre? No way! I mean, they're not even remotely close. Like you said, "Grunge" was just a marketing campaign.

  • And this is a great band and a great song also.

  • He used his fame to shed light on a lot of lesser known bands, I respect Kurt for that.

  • fuck all this nirvana shit this should be about the vaselines ! dang

  • In Spanish would be:

    No esperes que llore

    No esperes que mienta

    No esperes que muera

    Por ti.

  • This is great! :)

  • tidy song

  • I came here because I have heard the Nirvana version of it, and I really like it. This version is really awesome. Not knockin Nirvana, but I am glad I got to hear this version of the song.

  • Sounds like what the Danish group The Raveonettes is trying to do.

  • what a pile of shit this song is. he can't sing. i can see how this would inspire kurt, taking in consideration what type kurt was. but nirvana and kurt's version is good, and doesn't sound like it was made in a public toilet.

  • @mehridin And this, my narrow minded counterpart, is why almost anyone you respect would dislike you, were they to have the misfortune of having to listen to your views.

  • @tbagins sounds like someone's talking out of experience! oh the irony :)

  • @mehridin Saying "I know you are but what am I?" would have achieved exactly the same thing as what you have just said. You are an awful, awful person.

  • @tbagins Lets put down our biography's and shutup and listen to some wonderful music that enhanced our lives.

  • @birdyyyful I have literally no idea what you are talking about.

    Congratulations.

  • @mehridin Yea because your songs were WAY better..... Oh wait....

  • Mi piace più cantata dai Nirvana....

  • Sometimes you just need more popular bands to bring to light great music by more obscure artists! fair play to Kurt and the lads for recognizing their talent!

  • you dont have to sound punk to b punk :D

  • thanks to nirvana im a fan of the vaselines! love them now

  • good enough for nirvana good enough for me and there pretty good too!

  • i prefer this version it just fits the vaselines better

  • good job Vaselines

  • beautiful slow sad folk.

  • Thank you, Kurt Cobain for tuning me in to this great group!

  • Thank you, Kurt Cobain for tuning in to this great group!

  • this song is great by nirvana and them <3 i love them both

  • Actually prefer this version - and I did no think I would ever say that.

  • No one knows who wrote this song, it is an old folk song: the vaselines' version came out first that's all

  • reminds me of velvet underground a bit

  • Holy shit. I love this. A lot.

  • both versions are amazing but I give more credit to the vaselines because they wrote it

  • @0GrandTheft0 did vaselines write it? i thought this song was an old hymn

  • @TheJbfan666 I'm pretty sure they wrote it as a rendition of an old christian song, but of course a different mood and lyrics

  • @0GrandTheft0 LOL whered you hear that?

  • @aScentlessApprentice kurt cobain says that before they play this song in theyre unplugged show

  • @aScentlessApprentice I'm not even sure, Kurt stated at one of his shows that it was but I don't know for sure

  • @TheJbfan666 Nellie Talbot wrote the original hymn in 1900. Nothing in common except the first line.

  • :3

  • funniest part is this is what came up when I looked up Christpher walken doing Shakespeare, still love this song though

  • the Vaselines version called "Jesus Wants Me for a Sunbeam", the Nirvana version is "Jesus Doen't Want Me for a Sunbeam".

  • @daviddowns81

    Looked it up, totally right.

  • anybody with this album knows that this song is called Jesus WANTS me for a sunbeam

  • @floydtibbs

I have often wondered about that and if it was a mistake or not. This was a great poppy album. Although I think I like Eugenius a bit better.

  • @floydtibbs I thought it was Jesus dont want to buy some bum cream.

  • @bombaymatt Well to be fair I don' think he would

  • @bombaymatt delightful.

  • @fedorgspsilvamma I try....lol

  • I see a lot of Nirvana-related comments. I'm as big a Nirvana fan as anyone, but I think it's unfair to Eugene and Frances (The Vaselines) to have them live in Kurt's light. Kurt wouldn't like that at all. If anything, he was trying to make the song in The Vaselines' respective light. If you prefer the Nirvana version or Vaselines version more, doesn't matter. It's a great fuckin' song by two great fuckin' bands.

  • @redheartbox They remastered the version, I like Nirvana's one better for that. But this one is as perfect.

  • @redheartbox Curt even mentioned them many times so people can listen to the original version

  • @redheartbox I only say this with respect, because this version is even more awesome than the Unplugged Nirvana version...I actually came here because I wanted to hear where this came from. The song, by either band, was fucking awesome. It's this upbeat sounding pop song but with a downbeat lyrical palate. This song shines on it's own, but not a lot of people would have found it were it not for Kurt. Either way, it's a beautiful song, and it stands on it's own accord.

  • @tallicdeth

    well said mate :)

  • @redheartbox very true dude very true

  • @rhittratt342 thank you kind sir

  • @redheartbox chill oot

  • ppppppp

  • ppp

  • una buena canción... pero nirvana hace un excelente cover.

  • this is great

  • @Velasqxez no.

  • @Velasqxez *does

  • Thumbs up if you still prefer Nirvana's version.

  • I knew Nirvana's version first, and really like it, but I love this one.

  • it's better Nirvana's version

  • I love that girls voice, it's so beutiful

  • I like this version and I like Nirvana's version too ... this song is just great (music, lyrics are good !!! )

  • It's don't, not doesn't!

  • is better to dont make a cover of nirvana when you are not nirvana lol ( the vaselines bad group)

  • @qc00infection

    Best troll ever!

  • @qc00infection This is the original song Nirvana made a cover ; know your music

  • @qc00infection dumbass nirvana made a cover of this -.-

  • Is this the first band to do this?

  • @drumjoey If by "do this" you mean perform this song, then yes, they wrote this song.

  • Awesome band. I love the fact that Nirvana covered songs of awesome bands like this one.

  • When nirvana cover your song its not your song anymore

  • @DuckSmuggler1 Sadly that's probably true. I mean look at David Bowie with The Man Who Sold The World.

  • @phailez

MMMmmm, Bowie will always be the guy for me... when I want hear “ The Man Who Sold The World”. I do love Kurts take on the song though.

  • good rock song influenced by a Christian song for children

  • The only reason I looked this up is because I wanted to see the difference between this version & Nirvana's

  • Chords :D D-C-G

  • Comment removed

  • @rockunit22 Comment removed , removed to where

  • @InerRecords nirvana version chords= E-D-A (B#-A)

  • @rockunit22 i know i just post the chords for this one :S

  • @rockunit22 why is it B# and not C?

  • @themightytad There's no such thing as B#, it's C. The chords go like this: D, C, G on the verse and pretty much the whole song except on the "don't expect me to die" part it's just D,C,D,C repeat. I mute when I'm singing the play regularly when I'm not singing.

  • @sparkytrick *theb play regularly

  • @sparkytrick There is such a thing as B#, technically it is C but in certain key signatures and under certain circumstances it'll be written as B#, same as you get double sharps and Cb sometimes even though the note is actually B. I was just wondering if there was a reason the guy wrote B#

  • This version sounds like a light, immature dismissal of Christianity. When Nirvana covered it, it conjured emotions and sentiments far deeper, like some great burden or loss caused him to question and abandon God. Man could Kurt pour himself into a song.

  • This version sounds like a light, immature dismissal of Christianity. When Nirvana covered it, it conjured emotions and sentiments far deeper, like some great burden or loss caused him to question and abandon God. Man could Kurt pour himself into a song.

  • So much better than Nirvana, ALWAYS will be though.

  • ita funny because they produced this track before nirvana was around, he actually inspirational role for kurt musically thats why more then one of his tracks are vaselines covers, but he got more of the limelight and credit for them although he always gave credit to them before he played a track by them, im a huge fan of both myself slightly more towards nirvana but at the same time the vaselines really show the trnsition from the 80s into the grunge period thanks vaselines for inspiring cobain.

  • Heard both versions....love them both!

  • fuck i was expecting a piece of shit but its good kinda sounds like kurt if anything the girl wrecks it a bit

  • @ironballsmcgee83 Always love hearing retards trying to compare a cover to the original and find it lacking. Disgraceful retard.

  • 3:43 T-Shirt of Smells Like Teen Spirit!

  • Fitting Easter song XD

  • great song but who the hell recorded this.

  • @thegermanchannel212 that's a little much but yeah cool to tell him about the vaselines

  • @trufiend138 you really need to get that sand out of your pussy

  • @samperamper go wash ur flannel ass clown

  • @trufiend138 Then get off the fuckin' video dipshit

  • @petergrffn700 ur pathectic...like this band

  • @trufiend138 So, it's amazing?

  • it sounds like kurt with a softer voice

  • Totally different meaning when you hear this compared to Nirvana singing it. Both are cool, but hard to decide on who's version is better, if possible at all.

  • Comment removed

  • I don't believe in god or jesus or whatever but I fucking love this song :p

  • @MarinManson Neither do they, for someone that fucking loves it you dont listen to it do you?

  • Comment removed

  • @MarinManson well this song is anti jesus so that makes sense.

  • @mojobrando It's not anti jesus, it's just it's just not pro jesus either.

  • @MarinManson I think it's supposed to be ironic anyway.

  • @donwantstobesedated yea I just realised that 2.... hihi....

  • @MarinManson Well, maybe that's why Jesus don't want you for a sunbeam ;)`

  • @MarinManson thats the point of the song

  • good song but i like kurt cobains cover bit more

    watch?v=rvYsiVXBvjc

  • this song is a brilliant answer to "Jesus died for your sins!"

  • i love nirvana but i must say this has to be the best version. Think even kurt would agree. Beautiful ...

  • EPIC!

  • @20mchugh09 Ugh stfu

  • @frankwhite432 ur a fucking idiot just shut up

  • @20mchugh09 Stfu I didn't say anything untrue. Take your goofy, illiterate comments elsewhere. Good lord the trolls are out in number on this video! "Mate" lol

  • :)

  • Genius songwriter.

  • i'm so in love with this song right now. i can't pick between the Vaselines & Nirvana's versions. both amazing.

  • this version is indie pop, nirvana's is nirvana. both awesome!

  • @PAULisDEADMANnumber9 Stfu you brainwashed turd

  • Thumbs up if you looked this up to see what it was like in comparison to the Nirvana version

  • @HBK344356 yeah lol and suprisingly ill be honest its pretty much just as good sounds like kurt a touch

  • @HBK344356 I knew it was different but i didn't know it was more powerful!

  • @HBK344356 Yeah! Yeah!

  • @HBK344356 Not as good. But still great.

  • @HBK344356 Yea, it's pretty damn good. Although, I'm not surprised, Kobain had such an amazing taste in music.

  • I like this, it's like organic hippy music. I also love the peppy beat with those lyrics.

  • Dont argue which is better. Kurt was a big fan of The Vaselines, You should all respect that. They are both good.

  • both versions are good but Nirvana have got the edge

  • Why don't all of you shut the fuck up and listen to the music? Kurt was a musician, granyed he was not as skilled as most people but in the words of Buz Osbourne "he knew how to put two cords together and write lyrics". You don't need to be extremely skilled to be a musician.

  • Seriously MrGrevy, I've got a camera and an acoustic guitar. I'm ready to go. If you think Kurt is not a musician, show me how it's done. I'll back myself up by posting a vid of one of my originals, we can go tit for tat. And neither one of us will be good as Kurt. Don't post something if you're not willing to back it up. Let's go!

  • @shwishshwash Yeh boyeeeee...im with you, i havent posted stuff yet, but to show these fools straight its probably the best way to shut them up!!!

  • @shwishshwash Do you know what a logical fallacy is? What on Earth does my opinion that Kurt is not a musician have to do with my ability?? Are you really that stupid? No one can think a guitar player sucks unless they can play better than that person? Congratulations on finding a new level of stupidity. Kurt was a strummer, not a musician. Whether or not I suck at guitar, or if I am a master has NOTHING to do with him. Good luck on your GED, genius. And I'll watch your original if you post it.

  • @MrGrevy A musician is defined as 1. a person who makes music or a profession, especially as a performer of music. 2. any person, whether professional or not, skilled in music. How is Kurt not these things? The challenge was only to see what your standard may have been since you yourself seemed to be so knowledgeable. Why so much angst and hatred? Yeah I know Clapton is a BETTER musician, but Kurt is still a musician. Take your meds.

  • @shwishshwash Angst and hatred because I had to be subjected to his angst and hate ridden music for years in high school. Every party, every time I got into a friend's car - nothing but Nirvana. It was awful. The nonsense lyrics, the repetitive, out of tune chords, the up and down the scale solos, it was torture. I was considering a musician as someone who writes music with an understanding of music theory, who can read music, etc., not so much someone who puts a few chords together.

  • @MrGrevy

maybe your friends could get a better class of friend... or you could have learned to walk and stayed away from parties because nobody would want to talk to you anyway...

  • @progrockr616 Because clearly the measure of class is based on peoples' opinions about Nirvana. Unbelievable.

  • @MrGrevy

Jimmy Page can't/couldn't read music. Case Closed.

  • @idospeakenglish Yes, he could - but not through his entire career. Do you really think Cobain was in the same universe as Page? Delusional and disgraceful.

  • @MrGrevy

I was trying to state a fact to get people to stop arguing and just listen to the music.

  • @idospeakenglish Except...it's not a fact. It is inaccurate. Moron.

  • @MrGrevy

Really? name calling? You aren't worth my time. I'm going to talk to mature people now, goodbye.

  • @idospeakenglish Good bye. Freaking lying sicko. Go cry somewhere else effeminate weirdo.

  • @paulidernirvanafreak Kurt wasn't a musician he was a guitar-strummer

  • @MrGrevy Let me hear what you have done better. Seriously, put a link up of your amazing material. Go ahead I'll match you and neither one of us will write a song as good as Kurt. Put your money where your mouth is I'm not kidding at all.

  • @shwishshwash What? Talk about a nonsensical challenge. Kurt was a guitar strummer, not a musician. He knew a few chords and he wrote some lyrics. It's not as if he was a master of music theory or knew what he was doing like someone on the level of Eric Clapton, for instance. I guess you don't have the common sense to understand that - OR to understand that whether or not you or I can write "better" music has no bearing on whether he was a strummer or not. Try to keep up man. Good lord.

  • Dis chooooon sux assbagz!!!!

  • @KDo10 I do not need to be educated about every time kurt cobain took a piss and what his favorite pasta shape was, or what his first teddy bear was called, i listen to the records now and again, as well as the other vast amount of music i have on record, i am anything but uneducated musically, i play a wide variety of instruments, can cut it proper on turntables too. Im not educated as you say about what bridge kurt cobain slept under and what smiley nice church songs he may have liked init

  • @bombaymatt typical chav scumbag

  • @KDol0 How can think you know anything about me, i mean chav....come on...is that the best you can do..........scumbag???......was that kurts firt teddys name???? By the way, why did they call themselves the vaselines if them was church peeps, was they priests, and was the vaseline for the alter boys?????? Was you a priest or an alter boy??? Lastly the sunbeam dont shine out of yo batty playa ennit and ting and ting yo....for rillio....what the dillio yo?????

  • @bombaymatt Stfu illiterate mook
