I think that when Mariah appeared as a professional singer, a lot of people stoped looking at WH as the only one, but found that there was another singer that could sing as good as WH, with power and soul.Probably not as powerful as WH, but much higher notes which also gave them chills.Until that time WH had all for her after MC she had to share the spotlight, eventually MC stealing the spotlight for ever from WH.
See she's just not going high...she's also hitting it so well. Her voice simply soothes the soul...that doesn't come with any techniques...you're simply blessed with it. Both are great singers. However, MC achieved a lot more and the rest is personal choice really.

I think that when Mariah appeared as a professional singer, a lot of people stoped looking at WH as the only one, but found that there was another singer that could sing as good as WH, with power and soul.Probably not as powerful as WH, but much higher notes which also gave them chills.Until that time WH had all for her after MC she had to share the spotlight, eventually MC stealing the spotlight for ever from WH.

Whitney Houston has lovely songs, but vocally... No way. I don't see how anyone can think any of Whitney's live performances can compare to Mariah Carey's 1992 grammy performance of If It's Over.
She just can't.
This is a nice performance, but that's it. Whitney had a nice voice. There was nothing out of the ordinary about it, it was just powerful.
And seriously... Aretha could destroy Whitney, so don't even go there.

I think both divas has something different to bring to the table, i prefer mariah but i don't believe anybody could deny whitney in her prime she was unbelievable, but as far as variety i would have to go with mariah as opposed to nippy and celine, she just did more she could give you hip hop, pop, r&b, she just experimented a lot more with her voice, and also for the comments about her not being able to hold a candle mariah's slayed arsenio hall everytime she performed

Personally i dont care for Mariah. when she was in her prime she was in the shadows of whitney, Never have i seen them as each others competition. Never have i heard of WH recording her high notes. MC whispers which is completely annoying. Even to date where both artist are out of the lime light whitney music is just better husky voice and all. I think what set Whitney apart as arguably the greatest singer of at least my lifetime is the PURITY & POWER of her voice. There have been great singers, who probably had more range, BUT I have NEVER heard any singer project with such CLARITY no matter what genre of music. Whether Whitney sang Gospel, Pop R&B whatever she could sing alto, soprano, tenor & still sang it PURE where as others struggled when they try to use their other registers Even when her voice was tired/husky she was great

Uh, to the people below me. Whitney has had nodules too. The nodules + the drugs damaged her voice when she was on tour with The Bodyguard. It's a known fact! If she took better care of her voice, she'd would have been fine now a days. BTW, love this performance, :) <3
