Lucille Ball was a not a natural comedienne, she was a serious actress. Now, as we all know, her "Lucy Ricardo" character was a very different story. Lucy did not just impersonate Carmen Miranda, but Carmen Miranda was brought onto the Desilu set to teach Lucy all the dance movements and gestures, as well as pulling the costume together for Lucy. Miranda was also paid a royalty for use of her recording. The reason Lucy's routine looks so effortless and good is because it's the real thing.
