You can use Bayesian Probability. P(World|sensory data aka video) is proportional to P(sensory data | World) x P(world). The resulting belief that the hollow part of the face is sticking out is due to our prior experience (always seeing convex faces). The fact that we don't usually come across sunk in faces (the hollow side) is why our perception favors the illusion of a convex face.
Okay, so I've looked at this video so many times that I can no longer see it as convex. I only see it as concave. Especially this version because the pictures is so high quality.....has this happened to anyone else?
@kissmachine1000 - lol, are you serious? This is an experiment of perception. It shows that the conscious mind creates a face out of the inside of the mask. Perception can/might be a construct of consciousness.
the human mind wants to see a face, immagine how indoctrination of religion all your life could also be suspect...if even when its right in your face and cant see it....thats how the mind works...we want to see a 3d face, even if it is not actually there...that is how our perception is...there is no illusion there, it is perception of indoctrination....no matter what...i cant see the inside of that mask....that is all the unknown really is...a hollow shell
@MadMAn12gauge In my knowledge indoctrination is something that comes from the world outside us, it's bestowed upon us by a second or third party. Wanting to see a 3-D face is in my opinion something that the brain does, without intervention of a second or third party. For that reason, if you want to link it to religion it could be a false argument. But I could be wrong.
@MadMAn12gauge Your mind was not "indoctrinated" to see a face. If you don't like that your mind is wired to recognize faces because you're a social creature, then unwire it, dive into psychonautics, and cast of all biases, including the ever so common pseudointellectual atheist bias.
The ring does make it easier to see it as what it is, a hollow side.

If you always see both masks as being convex you are either a schizophrenic or under the influence of psychedelic drugs.
